TODD Carney hasn't played a minute of representative football - but the Raiders wild child will become one of the game's richest players with Manly and Penrith making $1.6m plays to lure the playmaker from Canberra.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal both clubs have offered Carney four-year deals worth an average of $400,000 per season, a salary matched only by NRL royalty such as Sonny Bill Williams and Mark Gasnier.

The Raiders will today make a last-ditch bid to keep their prized local junior - but need to better the rich offers from their Sydney rivals.

Sources close to Carney - who just last week finished a club-sanctioned community service stint for his role in a police pursuit - said the 22-year-old was strongly considering turning his back on the Raiders and linking with Manly.

Carney recently toured the Sea Eagles training facility at Narrabeen and is favouring a move to Manly over a reunion with his former coach Matt Elliott at Penrith.

By heavily back-ending his deal, Manly would be in a position to fit Carney under the salary cap, especially with highly-paid stars Steve Bell and Matt Orford coming off-contract in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Manly CEO Grant Mayer confirmed his club's interest in Carney, but claimed a "formal offer" was yet to be made.

"There's no doubt Todd Carney is a terrific player, but there's a lot of work to be done with our current playing roster before we worry about new recruits," Mayer said.

The Panthers, original favourites to snare Carney, were also keeping tight-lipped. Elliott and Carney have kept in touch since the coach arrived at the foot of the mountains last season, their on-going relationship fuelling long-held suspicions among Canberra insiders that Penrith have been poised to pounce for some time.

"At the moment, it's something for Todd and his manager to sort out," Penrith general manager Mick Leary said.

Raiders boss Don Furner met with Carney's management on Wednesday, where he was told of the higher bids. Canberra have since revised the length of their deal from three to four years, but will struggle to match $400,000-a-season.

With offers like this, you'd think the kids a superstar or the next Joey Johns. Anywho, discuss.

Shame he gets into a lot of trouble off the field, not sure if id pay that much money on him, pretty inconsistent so far in his career.

No doubt hes got potential but i wouldnt pay $400 grand a season for him especially at this stage in his career. He's only had one good season and it wasnt AMAZING.

Well thats how much he's going to get 400k/season.

THE Canberra Raiders have received a massive boost on the eve of their NRL season with star half Todd Carney agreeing to a new deal with the club. The Daily Telegraph can reveal Carney, 21, has rejected massive offers from the Penrith Panthers and Manly Sea Eagles to remain loyal to the Raiders.

A club spokesman said the deal was a two-year extension, with a further two-year option until 2012.

Carney, who is being touted as a potential NSW halfback as early as this year, had reportedly been offered a $2million dollar, four-year deal by the Panthers. The Raiders deal will be $400,000 a year.

I dont see the whole big deal with this kid.

His got potential. He is probably to the Raiders as what Mullen is to tus.

Not sure if his worth that sort of money at this stage though.

The Bidding from other clubs, no doubt pushed his asking price up, and ended up with 400k. I dont see much in him atm now either, probably worth about 250 max.

Fantastic news for Canberra, he is the man for their future. Maybe even more important than Mullen is to us.

Raiders half back Carney signs new deal

Canberra Raiders halfback Todd Carney will remain at the club until at least 2010, after today agreeing to a new deal with the NRL side.

The four year deal will see Carney in the nation’s capital until the end of the 2010 season, with an option on the remaining two years of the contract.

Carney said although it had been a long process, he was more than happy to be remaining in Canberra, and looked forward to fulfilling his potential and repaying the faith the club had shown in him.

“I really want to stay in Canberra and the big thing for me is that I want to achieve something here, and I feel like I can achieve something here,” Carney said. “If I was to walk away I’d have felt like I’d left here with something unachieved, so the next four years will be driven by me wanting to do something for Canberra.”

Massive article at that link, great signing for Canberra, one of the best ones they have made in quite some time.

Good to see the loyalty the youngsters in this game are showing. (Even if they do push it a bit with the money).

If they can hold onto Zillman too, Canberra could go good once all their players are developed/experienced.

U23, Yeah I agree with the loyalty, however I have a feeling Zillman is going to leave, although I hope for the Raiders sake he doesn't.

Brogga, Yeah I think it's quite a big risk, but what if he goes on to play for Australia etc.

I see your point for sure, i personally think the risk factor is way to high considering hes only in his second year. If it pays off - good luck to them.
