Dane Gagai discussion

Was a big hater when we were garbage and he left. Love the guy now. He's a legend of the club and I can't be mad at him for wanting to go around for another season. Hope he towels up for em.

Never had an issue with him leaving because he never dumped on the club or thought he was above a losing team. I can't say that about everyone. The fact he came back the club welcomed him back makes me think there was no bad blood, and even now when he was told there's no contract, and possibly disappointing not to finish up here for another year but also understanding there's younger guys waiting in the wings. And again not spitting the dummy about it, goes around and comes around lol
He'll always be welcomed back at the Knights in any other capacity as far as I'm concerned. And it's not surprising he's already been made a life member (if he wasn't it was a matter of when not if)
 
My memory of when Gagai left for Souths, the club said to him they were happy for him to go and try win a premiership as we were a basket case at the time. I could be wrong about that though

This time round, we told him at the beginning of the year that we wouldn’t be offering him a new deal due to the roster situation. As a player he would appreciate the honesty and it then gives him all season to try find a new deal for himself

I am hopping this means we get him back in a coaching capacity. I haven’t heard anything about him staying at the Broncos after next year, so we may still bring him back
 
I’m sure he will come back to Newy after his contract is up. They love it in this area. Didnt his family stay up here while he was playing at Souths too?
 
First time Gagai was here we paid him SOO type money and he played like an average player for us (and a world beater for Qld).
This time around we have paid him average firstgrader money and he's played like a SOO player.
All evened out in the end.
 
Actually thought Gags was by far and away the Knights' best player before he left to win his ring at Souths. Was gutted when he left, because somehow the club had no money to keep him despite the dire quality of the roster.

From memory the story at the time was 800k from Souths which was crazy at the time for a centre. It hurt though being one our better players, Origin reps. I remember thinking maybe if we put him at fullback he'd be worth the money, he looked good there when he was younger.

What was our best offer? I remember thinking it was in the ball park of $575k

When he came back he got the extra year, from us and Souths were only gonna offer two…it was justified.

Then the Roosters wanted him because it was better for him to play and defend outside of him, but didn’t want to throw in another year.

He could probably get two years in the ESL if he really wanted his agent to push for it.
 
Bit of talk about Gafs performances the last few weeks. Are we knocking a champion and give him more time or should the coach make a huge call?

The importance of a strong run home hinges on weather we scrape into 4, get a home semi, or scrape into the 8.

Seems he’s lost a bit of pace and strength atm, which also leads to time to pass on to Dom on the wing. Will Hunt give us that?
 
Does hunt have a decent pass to put young away?

Young on purpose playing one in for hit ups

Our first set of six last night both wingers had hit up and it was effective 👍

Need someone who can get him ball but the weather and some passing inside to gags has been poor lately

Hunt was a 5/8 in Ball. He formed a great combination with Wilson De Courcey, finding him unmarked with 20 metre cut out passes.

Haven’t seen him produce anything like that even when he played FB consistently. I too saw him play some great ball play in SG when he replaced Linnane, but any time in FG that he has tried to tap a ball on, majority of time it goes to ground or he knocks on from pressure of D.

I’m happy to give him a go but I’m definitely more on the Winter train. He’s had more polished skills at both FB and Centre and continued that in Cup.

I’d personally put Winter in above Hunt, Winter is the future. Hunt at best is a very good Winger.
