Toohey's News

15/7

Lots of opinion pieces this week.

Long essay on what to do with the halves for the rest of the season - conclusion - stick with Sharpe for the rest of the year at half.

Says Gagai needs to lift.

Says Seve leaving could open up a deal for Frizz next year and Hunt beyond 2027.

Says 6 juniors in Aus schoolboys is most we've had - next best was 5 in 1995 that included Buderus and Matt Gidley.

Says 1 of the six has signed for the roosters and another has a deal on the table but is looking around.

Says Connor Votano out and we are confident that Cooper Votano will choose to return.

Says Olivia Higgins is close to extending her deal

With Gagai - speculates that we could use Hunt or go for Toby Winter if he keeps performing like last week in reserves - but only if Gagai doesn't lift his form.

Elsley is the one who’s off to the Roosters. Not ideal but we’ve got a lot of young centres so kind of inevitable that they won’t all fit. Obviously Winter is ahead of him, presumably Baxter Best will be too, and then young Benji Thompson who’s also mentioned in the article as being one who only just missed Aus Schoolboys selection will also be in SG Ball next year. Think that’s three similar or better centre prospects around the same age, and that's without mentioning Will Manning (the other Aus Schoolboys centre) or the McKay brothers.

Rostron is the one apparently looking elsewhere and that would be a more significant loss, though with our NRL fullback and halves locked in long-term there’s probably more open pathways for him elsewhere.

I think that Kiwi kid from Mats who looks 25 but was 15 is our best centre prospect - pity I can't remember his name.

Malachi Faavae-Eli

Spent the whole Mats season looking like he was 2 years older than anyone else, and then they picked him in the city under 16s, so he was actually a year younger.

In terms of future prospects as a whole I’d say we have a few with the pick of them at the moment is the prop Jack Hillier imo but we also have Bates, Allen (prob further away than the other two) and more we can get into but they are all (baring Hillier) about 3-5 years away
Few more to add to the list: Kingston Seu-Seu, Ollie Lawrence, Jack Asplet. All a few years away, but showing great promise.
Forwards obviously develop a bit later than backs and there’s a lot of talent in the juniors so you never know who might make it through.

I used to be able to put together a top 10 list of juniors in years past.
I think it would be a top 30 this year - and maybe that would still miss some future firstgraders.
The junior facilities we were going to build this year really should have been completed by now (grandstand and changing rooms on the second field of the CofE).

With the cap supposedly going twofold up I’d even contemplate signing him further (nothing ridiculous) but he may want to start elsewhere.
His not a starting half in any top 8 club, his a great utility at 14.

People however are vastly overrating him.

Sharpes ceiling is WAY higher and Crossland speaks for himself at 9.

His not in anyway the best 6, 7 or 9 at the club, just a talented backup.

Hell at 9, his behind Graham as well, but his versatility in the halves as well makes him the perfect 14.

He won't ask for walk - people stop taking Billys offhand comment by Billy as a rumour he wants to walk.

Any other top 8 club he fills the same role and is probably on more money here and treated better than he would be at most places.

So tired of this discussion.

Looking at our potential spine long term, I just don’t see a place for him down the track. The likes of Butler, Hagan, Rostron etc in addition to the long term deals for KP, Brown and fletch makes for a bit of a logjam of talent. It’s a great place to be in, but we certainly can’t keep them all. Based off talent alone, obviously looking into a crystal ball I think i know where id place smith amongst the names above.
