Within 90 minutes of this post England lose three wickets….I see what you did there @jamesgould !Smith and Atkinson batting very well. England halfway there!Don’t think this is as over as the commentators think, given NZ’s very depleted bowling attack.
bazball is dead finally. the real interest now for me is to see how the poms will prepare test wickets moving forward. if they go back to preparing traditional english seemers thats going to boost our chances for the next ashes series.Baz sacked as England Test coach. Still keeps the ODI and T20 position
Yes, we certainly do need to have a long hard look at our batting and there is time for new batsmen to settle in before the Ashes start.Same for Australia, Lefty...need to sort out our top order. And I'm not sure we can persist with Cameron Green either.
Problem is you put marnus and green back to shield and they are the best 2 batsmen by a long way.Same for Australia, Lefty...need to sort out our top order. And I'm not sure we can persist with Cameron Green either.
Yes it’s a dilemma, they have been underperforming at test level for a long time now.Problem is you put marnus and green back to shield and they are the best 2 batsmen by a long way.
I did have it on in the background, but I didn't notice during the broadcast of the last test v NZ; a podcast I listened to mentioned that the Kiwis were giggling at how stupid and reckless the English were in throwing away their wickets in a game that was still winnable at the start of play.there's a real lack of leadership options in that side
Any ashes series over there is a massive challenge. We havnt won a series over there outright since 2001 (just think about the quality of sides we have sent in that time).England will most likely go into the series as deserving favourites.I wouldn't be expecting much competition from England in the near future. From what I saw in the test series vs NZ, there's a real lack of leadership options in that side ... and a lack of quality in pretty much every aspect of the team - batting, bowling, spin bowling ... actually, ok, they have some decent pace/medium bowlers. Keeping is not a strong point.
For all McCullum did wrong, he did get them playing two years of their best cricket in ages. They certainly decimated us (NZ) in the first Bazball series over there. But then Broad retired, Anderson retired, Stokes declined, players who did well for them in that era like Bairstow, Leach and Robinson randomly fell out of favour. At that point they needed to start rebuilding and reign in their tactics a bit ... but it's been very scattergun since then and probably the pressure of yet another Ashes series quickly approaching every two years led to some short term decisions.
If I was them I'd just focus on the next test series. What's the best team we can select, who can we get in there as a solid, dependable leadership choice (even if not currently in the test side!) and let's try and grit out some real effort days of test cricket. Pick some players because you believe in their skill and give them a decent run in the side. Forget the Ashes, if you're playing well that will take care of itself.
But personally I have to say England have won what, five Ashes series out of 20 in the last 40 years ... they are not going to present a decent challenge in the Ashes series, so don't get your hopes up for an epic. There's the WTC to focus on and much better bilateral series out there to watch.
It’s funny how international teams have these good matchups and bad matchups. NZ has won two test series in England in the last five years, so I look at it as not a difficult place to win if you play well. Same as India, they’ve only won one test series in NZ since 1968, and we beat them 3-0 in India in 2023, so I look at them as a pretty beatable opponent.Any ashes series over there is a massive challenge.
