The pre-season 2026 thread

Knights announced 4 open training sessions around the region. One at the stadium then one at Cessnock, Raymond Terrace and Coffs Harbour. Obviously a response to the Broncos training in Maitland but good to see nonetheless.
Amongst all the other issues that need attention at the Knights, it would be fair to say that player engagement with the community has been very poor since the days of the Chief, Joey, Matt Gidley, Mark Hughes and Danny Bedarus.
The players need to be much more active in the community, not just a few reserve graders and younger guys. The first grade team need to be front and centre on their days off or after training. This has been sadly lacking for a long time and it gives the impression that the players think it is beneath them.
A big bucket of humble is needed by all the Knights NRL players on this regard.

It's not "ball playing skills" per se. Kalyn Ponga throws better money balls than almost any other player in the game but also had massive issues with the role he was given this year of trying to be on-ball more, working the team to the right positions, doing the lead-up work which disorganises the defence so that someone like Kalyn Ponga can punish it (too bad he wasn't in positions to do so anymore!).

Throwing passes to unmarked wingers & other money balls like those described are absolutely not indicators of a good ball-playing skill set *for a half*, specifically. When you watch Sharpe and Sandon Smith play, try to turn your attention away during the parts where they are directly involved in a try being scored. Watch the other parts. Watch what they're doing in yardage sets, watch how and when they are delivering the ball to their outside men when the team is working through its shapes - what decisions are they making, how consistently is the defence reading it and shutting it down with a dominant tackle vs being stressed and making ineffective contact + giving up quick play the balls. Watch for if the ball is out in front of those outside men or behind them. Watch for when they're turning down opportunities to keep spreading the ball to run it instead. Watch for something as simple as how switched on and clear in their positioning the forwards and backs playing off the back of said half look. What kind of grade would we give Fletcher and - I'm not singling Sharpe out here - Kalyn on any of these points?

Sandon Smith - Connor Watson comparisons. That'll do me.
I should clear that comparison up. I meant he is more a high energy, make things happen at pace player than a traditional organising 7. He is clearly a better ballplayer / playmaker than Watson I think, but more in a 6 way than a 7 way if that makes sense. .
I'm certainly happy to be proven wrong re Sandon. I'm happy with any scenario where the Knights play good footy, and ill support whatever way Holbrook goes, he is the one in the big chair.

Can anyone think of any instances for a winger in roaming role in the NRL? I remember an origin game Turbo was roaming from center. laterall and Turbo had a field day and we pumped them.
There’s Romain Franco….he’s a French winger who has previously played for Catalan, Wakefield and Bradford.

Sharpe's great skill is reading the play and knowing where he needs to be and getting there at the right time.
Wherever they put him, he needs to have the freedom to see an opportunity and take it with both hands. That's how he averages a try a game over his playing career.
Wing seems the worst position for Sharpe, although he still seems to get himself into the action.
Fullback works, obviously.
5/8 works.
Centre might work.

Nathan Blacklock was an NRL winger who had a roaming commission - his coach gave him the freedom to put himself into a try scoring position, anywhere he saw a chance. He was a constant threat. Don't know if it would work now.

I think at centre Sharpe is closer to the action, can roam from there. He will need to learn defence in that position but he has done it at 5/8. We put Gagai on the wing. Gags is good under the highball and will carry it back pretty strongly. He played wing for Souths and Qld obviously.

Closest would be when RTS and Minichello used to alternate between Fullback and Wing - not quite the same as would occur here.

I imagine Holbrook is pretty across what Sandon Smith can bring to a team. Happy to trust him to pick the best combination.

If he sees something/enough in Sharpe to go with Sharpe/Brown halves, smith at 9 - so be it.

If he thinks Smith has more to offer at 7 with Brown, than Sharpe - so be it.

At least this time around, I trust the coach has something in mind. And will be reacting appropriately. Opposed to we’ve tried A and B, B and C, hmm let’s try A and C and see what happens.

Yeah a roaming centre makes a lot more sense to me in the current game than a roaming winger. As Bily alludes to as well. I think there's too much riding on wingers being in the right spot for finishing chances, kick diffusals (attacking kicks and long range kicks), kick returns ... for them to be popping up all over the field.

It's interesting that Holbrook has said he's going to decide early on and stick with it. If he does go with something and it doesn't work, there's a few players in that spine that can move around. I can see the temptation will be there to make a change, and if things aren't going well, it would be silly not to adjust things.

Unlike the AOB years where I think all players had pretty defined roles, and he just couldn't decide what his first pick was in each position.

But anyway, I can see an AOB MK2 spine shambles, even if Holbrook says it won't happen lol. But it could be a good thing, this time! As long as it's not every single week like AOB haha.

Agree with all this to a point but the fact that almost all his best footy comes from how well he can play off the ball and/or finishing off chances kind of encapsulates why 5/8 didn’t work with him.

Or rather, why it worked for him individually at the expense of the team as a whole.

Obviously you want your halves to be good support players but there’s a lot of other stuff they need to be good at too.

Also I’m not really sure why the conclusion from “he’s really good at finishing off try scoring opportunities generated by others” is “wing is the worst place you can put him”. Maybe we should be looking to get Dom Young into the halves too, if it’s bad to play our best try scorers on the wing…

Our spine will be very different.
Not much is being said about Ponga, but he has delivered more try assists than anyone else for years, and our only real hope of making top 4 next year is if he wins the Dally M and averages 2 try assists a game.
Sharpe and Crossland have unknown roles.
Brown and Smith both have unknown roles now.
I know what Arthur will do if picked - 20 or 30 minutes off the bench where he'll try to run a lot.

There are a lot of good elements - putting them all together is the issue.

About time, they started engaging with the community. For a club who loves to praise their fans for the way they turn up, it’s been a long time since those words have been anything else but meaningless platitudes.

Their fan and community engagement would honestly have to be the one of the worst in the comp, even their social media output is very poor compared to most other clubs.

This goes for the players too. They could learn something from the Panthers players, 4 comps in a row but they still spend a lot more time with the fans after the games than the Knights players do.

I would hope this is just the start of improvements in this area because it’s long overdue.

There may still be plenty of rusted on older fans that won’t go anywhere despite what’s dished up, however, there’s no guarantee that continues into the future.

Why would kids today continue to support this rabble when they have a million other things, and NRL clubs, vying for their interest. Pretty much anyone under 30 would barely even remember the last Premiership and anyone under 24 wasn’t even born yet.

Spine has to be:
1. Ponga
6. Brown
7. Sandon
9. Crossland

As others have said on here previously it’d be such a knights thing to do to move players around from their dominant position.
Sharpe is still 21, he can be somewhere in the backline, and play in the halves or fullback when injury strikes. What a great problem to have depth, he will have his time. Look at Faaologo at the storm.

We’ve all seen how good brown is playing that natural left side five eighth setup, and sandon has looked good at halfback for the rooters.

Maybe im wrong, and sandon is the next Buderus, and sharpe can develop an organising half and Adam Reynolds like kicking game over the next three months. But more likely we’ll be 5 losses into the season with a disjointed spine that gets swapped week to week.

Sharpe at five eight was never going going to be a perfect, quick transition. Clearly needs more time than half a season, without constant spine changes. Maybe he improves on his deficiencies and becomes a great five eight. Obviously excited for when he makes the fullback jersey his own though.

Which is funny because Sharpe was our best player this year and its not even close. He has to play in the middle of the field and he needs to be around the ball as much as possible imo.

He already is an incredibly dangerous five eighth. He will only get better as time goes on, his potential is massive.

So whats the plan? Sharpe becomes a roaming centre, Ponga also roaming from fullback plus two halves. Effectively having four halves on the field.
Sounds messy and disjointed.

1. Ponga
6. Sharpe
7. Brown
9. Smith

Crossland covers 6, 7, 9 ,13 in case of injury. In my opinion this is the best setup for utilising our roster.
If Sharpe isn't playing five eighth you have Crossland at 9 and Smith at 6/7. If one of those gets injured then everyone has to shuffle around too much. Just like the last few years imo.
