NRL Round 25 - Knights Vs Broncos - 2:00pm Sunday 24th August - McDonald Jones Stadium

NYC stopped kids who were ready from playing against men.
Defence was so poor in NYC that we saw guys like Beau Henry and Kyle O'Donnell turn 20 and go up to seniors and be totally unable to defend, despite making team of the year in NYC.
We now see guys like Votano and Hopwood playing against seniors at 18, and struggling, but gradually getting used to it, and both looking like they will make the grade as early as next year.
In short, NYC was turning out 20 year olds who looked great against other kids and couldn't play against men, and every team spent a lot of money on guys who weren't going anywhere.
Well hate to tell you but the NRL is determined to bring it back, it was very popular and seem to create a good pathway. Last I heard QLD was going first with plans for a national comp soon to replace NSW cup as the curtain raiser. Back to the future it seems.

It didn't create a good pathway.
It was scrapped because it kept guys playing till they were 20 who had zero chance to make a career of football.
They did stats of how many guys were going to seniors and, for the amount of money spent, it had a tiny success rate, and even before it was scrapped, most teams were putting the good prospects up to seniors instead of NYC, because it set them back to play against kids for too long.

Maybe an NYC with a 21 or 23 age limit would work better, but the 20 age limit didn't work.

How did it stop kids from playing against men?
The new comp is now U21's.
Cleary went from NYC to first grade and did ok.

Wouldn't players who were ready for seniors but not first grade, still move to cup first?

NYC had rules about doing school or study or work and limited the amount of training etc etc.
It was a separate system.
I think you could go to seniors, but not back to NYC once you did, so guys didn't go up for 1 or 2 games. Not sure about how it worked - too long ago.
The plan was to look after kids and give the ones who weren't going to have a career, which was most of them, a proper life balance.
It wasn't just an age limit. NYC players were part timers with some sort of non football pursuits.

Never send a boy out to do a man’s job.
Yes blooding young up and comers is great but the greater picture here is “The SPOON”.
If a player such as McEwen deserves selection then great, if circumstances mean Votano plays because Ponga and Sharpe are injured so be it.
Knights have been poor in many areas but up front has been weak and the side needs to be picked to win games not get smashed playing young inexperienced players and the likes of Croker and Jones are ok but not playing up front due to being more accustomed to 11-13 they don’t have that strong push to make the impact as props.
Positions 6 & 7 have been a constant problem through both injuries and lack of quality, we need a cheeky talkative 7 who directs the play, calls the shots. Cogger, Hastings and Gamble have not worked partly due to injury or lack of ability. Don’t understand why we got Arthur from Manly to then play him at 6 when 7 is his preferred position and unlike Cogger he has a reasonable kick on him.
Next season positions 1-5 look good with left wing a worry, will wait and see with 6-7, pack will be stronger with new incomers and Leo leaving. Back 3 off Crossland, Lucas and McEwen looking very good and good cover with Croker, Frizell and Jones along with the young up and comers.
Am done with this season, think we are a slight chance this week against Broncos, need a win to avoid the spoon Dont think we will get a win against Eels last game but am looking forward to what we have for next season, AOB or no AOB.

I don’t see how we win any games at the moment with any combination of players we have available tbh.

Is me just having a whinge but I liked the extra comments from those involved, was more about Old Blokes Day being a full crowd with all three grades playing on the day at same venue, it should be special with all, players, Family, Supporters and Fans attending if the wish

By the looks of this, wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more Broncos supporters at the game than Knights.

Have the Knights held any open session like this for fans this year?
Thought this was a brilliant initiative from the Pickers. Pickers coach and management have built a culture up there that’s second to none and foster relationships. It’s a pity the Knights don’t foster this with such a brilliant feeder that the local league provides. Someone mentioned that the knights do oppose sessions? Fair comment but do we encourage our community and fans to come along and support? Build a better culture, build a better team. We are a club built by grit and the our town our team mantra and I think we have some people in the establishment who either forget or don’t understand what that means to the Hunter. They are not the people for our club. My opinion anyways!

Why would people really care about watching a team train when they have the ability to go and watch them play regularly?
Im pretty sure you can go watch them if you want to at the COE.
When it comes to the local league outside western suburbs its a conflict of interest.

Create a club day for each of the Newcastle RL sides and have the training sessions rotate around every Real NRL club once or twice per season. Supports the local league and puts people back in touch with the Knights. Would probably help show the players who they’re representing as well.

Makes sense to me.

Sunny in Newcastle but strong southerlies so going to need to take advantage of that wind if we can when we have it as will be lucky to kick 20m into today.

Crowd is a sell out so if they can’t at least try hard in front of a sold out crowd and old boys day then may as well not turn up

Broncos will still most likely win but if it was a 4-6 point loss and effort there then most likely majority would be happy that we at least see some effort after the last 3 or so weeks of meaningless output that’s been shown
