NRL General Recruitment and Retention

So differing reports, but either Sexton (Galvin going to halfback) or Tracey (Crichton/Burton to fullback with Burton going to centre if Crichton to fullback) or steroids boy is apparently the casualty of this decision.

Horrible decision in all cases. Sexton helps them stay disciplined. Tracey’s work ethic in yardage is emblematic of what they’re doing. Steroids boy does a lot of steroid-related work out there. They’re dropping a guy who constantly plays out of structure into the team at the expense of a key part of their formula.

I’d understand this if they were bringing in someone who’s like Sexton but better, or like Tracey but better, or like steroids boy without the steroids. What they’re doing could seriously ruin a winning recipe.

Interesting timing with Gus also in the media trying to pick a fight with QLD, maybe don't look at our magical salary cap media...look at me being mean to QLDers instead. He's the Donald Trump of the NRL.

Could we pick up Sexton?

As has been stated in here, it’s hard to see a starting calibre half being signed to the club, given the salary which would be involved, unless an existing spine player is squeezed out.

If Ponga, Sharpe & Crossland are all still here next year, the only half we’re likely to sign is a young bloke still at least a year or two from playing first grade.

The Leaguie is calling out Gus Gould's blatant market manipulation here:

Good on him for calling it out because the traditional media likely won't say anything about it because they don't want to get off side with Gus, but what's gone on here has been appalling. He's screwed the Tigers out of a top talent they've developed and were willing to pay to keep and he's screwed the Eels out of an opportunity to bring back a junior they desperately need, he's some how signed the latest big name talent in the market and stayed under the cap AGAIN and he's misused his platform in the media for his own advantage AGAIN.

Something should be done, but as a betting man, I wouldn't put any money on it.

Bred not bought....bulls!!!

I wonder what grounds the NRL have to investigate this, if they even care.
I’m sure somebody will eventually trawl through all of Gus’ podcasts and media comments (when he has had his media hat on) about Galvin. (Goodluck listening to Matt Thompson).

Maybe we should get POS or Gardiner or AOB on a podcast and play our routine segment of “what contracted players would you be interested in, IF you were allowed to be?” Just for a bit of a laugh….obviously.

I’m also curious how the Tigers feel with Luai/Turuva etc for their alleged ‘bullying’ as this has basically allowed Galvin to leave.

As for the Dogs, very risky upsetting the status quo. I guess they get a chance to see Galvin / Sexton for a few weeks and see if Burton/Galvin works, or who makes way. Anyway, presumably Galvin has one half spot there for the foreseeable future. So think Woods would be the most attainable half there, perhaps he could “do a Galvin” and shop himself around and declare he won’t sign another contract with the Bulldogs.

I’m assuming they need some cap space for next season with rumours Mahoney is on the out. Would be happy to take Curran off their hands.

I have been banging on about how is Gould allowed to have a role in the media where he basically enticed Galvin in public and also hold a role as GM at the dogs.

Biggest market manipulation I have ever seen yet the NRL will be too spineless to do anything.

From the dogs point of view its all just good business. Don't get mad at Gus, get mad at the system that would allow him to do it. It's also not his fault that the media ask him these questions live on air, he does a pretty good job of trying to keep his answers vague and most of the doesn't straight up admit things.
Not saying what he is doing isn't wrong, but I also don't blame him for using the tools that are available to him to lure players.

Yeh, I agree. He’s just walking the tightrope.

NRL too scared to cut the safety cord though that saves him if he miss-steps.

Same goes for Anasta.

Blame is on the NRL for letting these things go.

Listening to Matty Johns podcast, they sometimes let slip some little, inside knowledge. Not necessarily secrets, but just confirmation that these podcasts/interviews aren’t as off the cuff as they can appear.

Eg. Last night, api was obviously briefed that a Galvin question was coming. He likely had conversations with the Tigers of what approach to take etc.

Same for 360, the conversation and one liners are almost identical to their Daily telegraph podcast, it’s so pre-planned. I think it’s naive of anybody to think Anasta, Gus and anybody else holding positions in clubs are not acting in the best interests of their clubs/clients if they get given the opportunity.

And like you say, I don’t blame them.

And that’s before we even get to commentators!

Code Sport also not rating the Galvin to Dogs signing...he doesn't fit to accomodate him someone is going to lose their sport (or he's signed on $750k to play reggies), they're going to lose some talent as a result (you'd think) and culturally it's an odd time to insert a new kid who is coming from a dysfunctional relationship at the Tigers:

Crawley:

"But there is a simple solution to stop the contract madness that has now allowed Lachie Galvin to walk out on the Wests Tigers to join Gould’s Bulldogs."

I'm listening...

"In the future, don’t allow it."

You what now?

"Make players stick to the contracts they signed. Makes clubs do the same."

🤦‍♂️

He is a spectacular dope. Whilst I'd like to see something done about Gus's misuse of his platform to basically recruit a player he wasn't allowed to talk to, this "solution" to player movement solves nothing.

It just exchanges one set of problems for another,

There are many very good reasons why a player or a club may want to move on early from a contract. These can be anything such as languishing in reserve grade, needing to move closer to family, having a fallout of the WAGS, falling out with the coach/playing group, taking an opportunity for a longer deal, injury crisis, etc.

Besides the fact that the clubs and the RLPA would say no, because why give up their flexibility for nothing in return?

As long as everything is above board and all parties are happy, then there's nothing wrong with the deals. What Gus has done is poor, but it isn't the same as a club and player coming to a mutual agreement to part ways.
