Ex-Knights Watch

Sione says Kristian Woolf was trying to get him to the Dolphins but it fell through, and he turned down a meeting with Benji Marshall due to not wanting to live in Sydney, but is still open to playing professionally again in the right circumstances.

Zach Herring & Clay Webb both signed with Featherstone Rovers in England. Both played most of the year in NSW Cup but Herring was in the development squad.
Hi, I'm a Featherstone Rovers fan, interested to read Knights' fans views about Herring and Webb from those who have seen then play NSW Cup.

Featherstone are in the Championship (2nd tier) of English RL and have been knocking on the door of SL in recent years, although the new IMG grading system very much counts against us. We have also signed ex-Knight Carlos Tuimavave for 2025, whilst we had another well-known (am tempted to say notorious) ex-Knights centre play for us in 2022 and 2023, one Joey Leilua.

Webb was a long time reserve grade player at Canberra Raiders and came to Knights last year in an attempt to break into the NRL. He is just below NRL standard and could be an ESL player, so he should be very good at your level. He is a small prop or second row.
Herring Is a very capable 6, 7, 9, or 13, but not quite good enough in any position to break into the NRL. He should be a good pickup for you - he can fill any of your spine positions.

Just read an article on new Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz - Says he was a Valentine and Knights junior who played alongside Anthony Tupou and Anthony Quinn in the juniors.

In other news, Mitch Black, who was a top squad player in 2021 and represented for NSW at every level, has started a train and trial deal at Parra. To be honest, I think he will be better than Arthur.

Hope these guys have as much patience as Jordan Mailata did, and certainly more then Valentine Holmes did

Wouldn't surprise me to see more Polynesian players with their freakish builds and athleticism going over there the way Mailata did but it's a huge learning curve and process. Even someone like Mailata got a bit fortunate a spot opened up for him through injuries at the right time and he got quality reps with the first team.

Article that says 38 year olds Jarrod Mullen and Luke Walsh have signed to play in the halves for Macquarie next year in the real NRL.
Mullen played for Corrimal last year. His well off the pace as expected. It’s a bit rich saying he played cup he only played a couple of games and didn’t set the world alight.

I do often wonder where the club would’ve gone if we kept Luke Walsh instead of Scotty D. Luke Walsh killed it at Penrith

Luke Walsh killed it for one season at Penrith and then kind of notoriously stopped killing it after that. Not convinced we missed out hugely there.

Mullen, as frustrating as he was, was a better player.

I think that was the season the panthers whole attacking playbook was bombs, bombs and more bombs. And then they got bounced out of the finals in straight sets.

Yeah and I think he has a record for try assists in a season, still, over all the time it’s been an officially tracked stat, off the back of it.

It’s tough to swallow given he was a good but not great player who we massively overpaid, but Mulldawg is the best half to come out of our region in the 2000’s so far, and we probably needed to figure out how to sign a better #7 to play with him. If I had a time machine I would probably use it to give the club a hot tip about how the career of a certain back-up half at Canterbury ended up going…

We had a plan, the #7 guy just retired a few years too early for us to see what Mullen’s ceiling as a true 5/8 would have been like but the sample size of 05-06 was pretty darned good to the point he was an Origin player the year after.

Then Gidley basically became another ball player in the line of attack like many of the better fullbacks were doing then to the point where it’s been an expectation for ages and during those years all we needed was a halfback who could organise/long kick and compliment Mullen. Went through a few guys, hit and miss performances. All mentioned in this thread

Then the plan was to find a young half with a high ceiling (Henry) to potentially be a long term partner in the halves, fair enough…a plan that was scraped pretty quickly with the arrival of a new coach…who seemed to be more focussed on the now and short term…fine, it worked at the Dragons…Hoped he would have a similar effect on Gidley as he did with a guy like Hornby…injuries galore and a fullback who has a dig every few months, we never really see much what that’s like.

Then the plan is an injured Hodkinson who has no knee cartilage/bad knees whatever it was…tried their best, results well speak for themselves

By the time they get their marquee halfback and best one since Joey, he’s long gone…forgotten about and if he didn’t screw up, mingle with the wrong crowd we might have witnessed one of the more interesting ‘what if’ combinations…two guys that actually probably would have complimented each other pretty well.

I’m sure with the money he’s made (and maybe some lost) there’s little empathy but eh timings a funny thing isn’t it…
