2025 Recruitment And Retention

but deeply concerning that Schiller and Arthurs are yet to be formally announced.
We are being told nothing about signings now.
Toohey said in his article that McCarthy has recently signed till the end of 2027, which makes him our longest current signing alongside Ponga - but there is zero official record of that - not even a profile for him in reserve grade.

Is it because we can’t announce signings because our salary cap is so bad?

The Broncos can’t afford Sam and have said they don’t think he’s right for them.

He’s testing his value to force the Roosters to dig into the war chest.
Roosters won't let him go if he's not replaceable. Walker is in prime position to receive some of that Politis money.

That said, if the Roosters prefer Moses then we're in with a shot on Walker.

No it takes a long time to sort out a roster Peter O Sullivan has been working non stop to reshape the roster. I think you will find once D saf goes then things will move quite quickly.

If we were winning the cap drama wouldn’t be a thing it’s the fact guys are just under performing. We actually aren’t allowed to be over the cap.

My understanding is we have already signed a bunch of juniors from other clubs and locked up our best juniors.

Watching Dsaf play over the last month or two has been so frustrating. See him come out and say "he ball is in my court and I can do what I want" in regards to staying or leaving. Fully agree with him, but what's annoying is there was a clear change in form once he was tapped on the shoulder. Everyone knows how good Dsaf can be because we've seen it, but his form and effort slacked off for a long time. If he had been putting in consistent effort for the last couple years, we wouldn't even be considering trying to let him go, because he can be that good.

In looking at Leo's value, you've got to allow for the fact he is a youngish front rower (he turned 24 in March this year), that was a late convert to Rugby League from Union and he still managed to get a Test debut last year.

For me there is a bit of 'second season' syndrome for Leo in finding his groove and he definitely seems very unsettled and distracted at present...whether some of that is to do with the anticipation of his brother coming or he is finding the disharmony in the changerooms affecting his mindset in the latter part of this season, I don't know. I think you put him in a system like the Storm or Roosters and he is definitely an upper echelon NRL middle forward with plenty of improvement there.

But he is also still finding his way in Rugby League (i.e. he's not been brought up through the junior development system), so he still needs good coaching and management to bring out his best and develop him to his full potential. My concern with Leo is that this basket-case of a club at a coaching level is going to lose him or destroy his confidence and he will look to chase a better support structure with someone like the Warriors.....and then come back to haunt us, every time he comes up against us at his new club:eek:

I agree with second year syndrome on Leo. The second year being after a breakout year being a bit underwhelming but he’s been playing very well lately. I’d hate to see him go because he will go up another gear next year regardless of where he ends up.

I wouldn't be too worried. Leo's manager is probably trying to capitalise on us seemingly trying to shed cap in DSaf and Brailey, plus Hastings, its appears. Earn an extra $100k or so.

Plus with Leo's brother from all reports coming along next season.

Kyle Feldt has became available. Reports say it’s unsure whether he will remain in the nrl or go overseas. Yes he’s at the back end of his career but he’s got a decent year or 2 left in him and his experience for the younger blokes coming through would be huge

IMO a team with Dane Gagai and Bradman Best in it shouldn’t have “experience for the younger blokes coming through” in their criteria for outside back recruitment. You’re not going to find better example setters short of resurrecting the corpses of the
Morris twins. Hell even Tuala is a 100+ game player now.

I just don’t think it’s gonna happen. Turn down Politis once and the bridge is burned. Moses will never be a Rooster and I honestly think it would be a huge blunder to invest any time in going after Sam at all.

I think you're right about Lachie Galvin. Not only is he super young with lots of upside, he is already a very high quality player. And there really isn't much else out there other than Moses.

Makes me think we should be chasing him.

If I'm honest I don't really see the Pezet you see. But I hope you're right because if you're wrong it's gonna be another 5 years wasted for the club (assuming we sign him).

What other option is there?

Hard mode: your answer needs to ignore the obvious play of dangling cap space and a marquee half breaks their contract to come to Newcastle.

I think it’s time to bite the bullet in regards to our future 7, not long term but intermediate, kiss Hastings goodbye, tell Cogger 7 is his for time being but we will continue to look, seek. Get Sutton a contract, development or top 30 with aim being his development and eventual takeover from Cogger. In the meantime continue looking out for top notch 7 from within or out. Continue to develop Flegg players with aim to fill or take over prime spots, fill potentials with confidence that an avenue to success exists.
Wouldn’t hurt to have this in place for all positions but 7 is our weakest followed 9 and 6, we are weak in spine and growing in other positions with strong Flegg players.
