Toohey's News

22/8

Brad Arthur had all but agreed to join the Knights to replace Kostjaysyn, but is enjoying coaching Leeds and is now unlikely.

Hastings - Toohey just takes half his article to say Hastings is on the outer.

Riley Jones will spend next year - the last year of his contract - establishing himself in a new position. Toohey mentions Matt Arthur, Malachi Smith and Diesal Hagan as emerging hookers but doesn't mention Jacob Davis.

Goes through terrible Stats for Leo Thompson in Sharks game and speculates that dragging negotiations to re-sign might be effecting his form.

Gamble will have surgery on his hand, but might be back if we somehow make the finals.

The reason Cody Hopwood went off after 10 minutes in Flegg and didn't return is a syndesmosis (ankle or calf sprain) for which he is having surgery.

In the article it says "Zeb" Sua will probably be 18th man this week and should debut soon. I don't know if he dictated the article to someone who mis-spelled or if "Zeb" is a nickname for Sebastien.

I thought Arthur had already extended with Leeds?

Hopwood out for season then? I hope he still has the chance to play schoolboys.

I’m sure I read that Jacob Davis was signed for 1 year. From what I’ve seen of him he deserves to be resigned and I hope we don’t lose another local junior. He’s been consistent all year. I think Smith is still green and doesn’t have the skill and impact I’ve seen from Davis. Davis was pushed back into the Flegg side this week for the finals tilt above Smith so clearly the knights rate him. Hagan is still up and coming - plenty of years left for him to graft his skills.

The article didn't say how long Hopwood would be out, but having surgery would mean several weeks at least - maybe months.

I don't know why Toohey didn't mention Davis, who was starting hooker in reserves last week. Maybe it was just an oversight, but he did mention everyone else, even Hagan from under 17s.

I agree that the good form of Davis in the early part of the Flegg season and Sutton in the later half of the season is a big part of why we are top 4. Having them both for the finals gives us a chance I think. Pity we can't have Sharpe, McCarthy, Sua, Bryan, Rahme and Cullen.

The others would have been solid to have - Cullen at least will still be eligible to come back to flegg for finals. Give a red hot go boys. We need some finals action - it’s not coming from above that’s for sure!

Regarding the Matt Arthur signing without his dad, this could be a less toxic outcome I’ve read a lot about the nepotism within the Eels in previous years with both Jake and Matt . However are we signing Matt as his caretaker club, developing and investing before he leaves to meet up again with his dad at the Bears come 2027?

I’m not sure Brad and his boys will think it’s a good idea to be on the same team ever again. Jake got booed going on in the second half of a grand final the Eels had already lost FFS. Matt didn’t cop it the same but his dad had already left. I think it’s the kind of thing which leaves a mark.

Says O'Sullivan has to sort out if DSaf, Brailey and Hastings will be at the club next year.
Says we need to tie up Thompson and Sua beyond 2025 and mentions both have a good relationship with Zammit, who is now at the Roosters.
There are a lot of names mentioned in the section on what O'Sullivan needs to do, but no firm news - just lists of players off contract really.

Says Jack Cogger got players player v Souths.

Says Michael Dobson will coach reserve grade in 2025 and help out with firstgrade. Also says O'Brien won't replace Kostjaysyn and will only have McDermott and Green as assistant coaches since Arthurs isn't coming.

Clint Zammit and Isaac Moses. What they need to do with these scum bags is put them in a pit and make them fight to the death… then knock the survivor on the head anyway.

So Dobson as NSW cup coach?
He has done really well with Flegg this year.
Because we have used a lot of young guys in NSW cup, he has had very limited use of Sharpe, McCarthy, Sua, Rahme. Davis, Bryan, Myers and most of his team for the second half of the season started the year in SG Ball. Despite that, we look like finishing top 4 in Flegg and have a chance to finish second if a few results go our way.
I expect the majority of the reserve grade team next year will be guys Dobson coached this year.
We are decent chance to make it all the way to the GF this year, which would mean Dobson gets to take them to the next level next year.

Yeah definitey liked this decision, he's doing good work with a lot of first Yr flegg players - a very talented bunch, but good to see he can guide them well.

Having them come through to NSW Cup is even better to set them up for 1st grade, whilst he's also still involed in Pathways.

Toohey's news has come up a day early - posted about 20 minutes ago.

Says Brodie Jones has interest from the Dolphins, but he says he isn't sure how serious they are. Matt Croker is also being squeezed out, because we have 8 middles in the top 30 according to O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan says he thinks DSaf will stay, with little interest from other clubs.

Elliott was surprised when a sydney paper reported he has been tapped on the shoulder. He says it's untrue.

Tuala likely to be signed.

Lucas likely to get an upgrade for 2025 and a longer contract.

Tyrone Thompson, who Toohey describes as a bigger version of Leo, starts at the Knights on a development contract in November and we are also close to signing a 19 year old Kiwi Union player who plays wing, but no name given.

Toohey says the matchup between the centres - Gags and Best v Hammer and Farnsworth - could decide the game this week.
