2024 NRLW season comments

Broncos winless and coming second last after 2 rounds.
With a 4 teams finals and a 9 game season, it took 6 wins to make the finals last year.
Broncos play top of the table Titans next week.
If they lose, they'll have to win every game for the rest of the season to make the finals.

Cowboys 38 - 34 Saints

Both sides looked good in attack and terrible in defence.
We'll score 50 v Saints next week - and they might get a try or two.

When I saw the scoreline I assumed Roosters must’ve been really good but having just watched, the Broncos were really just ****.

Roosters were really aggressive in defence, ran very hard and made good metres. Having Bremner back helped a lot. Mostly though, they just capitalised on Broncos errors.

Can’t see Brisbane beating the Titans unless something goes massively wrong for the Titans.

I think the Titans should be favourites. Jaime Chapman is the best athlete in the NRLW, the tracking data has her hitting what would be good top speeds for male players when she’s in full flight. I’ve gotten the vibe previously that she’s one of these girls who just plays because she’s naturally good at it and doesn’t take it super seriously, but this year she looks like she’s considerably fitter than in previous seasons and looks unstoppable 1 on 1 or even 1 on 3 with a full head of steam.

They have the pack and yardage workers in their backs to dominate physically every game and a cheat code strike weapon in attack, really they just need competent halves play and to not make bad errors and they’ll be so hard to beat.

Ron Griffiths gave a season pre-view on NITV a few weeks ago and he said the Titans would have won the GF if they kept going to Chapman - or to the well as he put it - then he tipped the Knights to win a 3rd because of their experience.

I don't think the Titans have made as much improvement as most other sides. I think they were really well prepared last year, and that was their peak. Sides like Eels, Raiders, Sharks, Roosters and Knights will all test them.

I agree the Titans are probably the strongest team across the park. They’re more athletic than us but so are the Roosters. I think the fitness and work rate of their middles is a key advantage over us.

I can see why Jeffries concentrated so heavily on improving their fitness and strength. We had to if were to keep competing. I think there is a noticeable improvement from last year in that regard

Chapman is amazing. I wonder if they might consider her for fullback in the future. She could be unstoppable, if she has the fitness for it.

Whilst they controlled our yardage well in the GF with their great line speed, their goal line defence wasn’t great and we scored with almost every opportunity.

I actually don’t think we’ve ever reached our potential in attack. If we can do that and if they can figure out a way to to stop Chapman. I think we can win again.

Winning becomes a habit and they’ve learnt how to win under basically all circumstances. Knights girls are also all very confident in their ability as a team and they’re competitive as hell too.

Should be an interesting season.

Yeah they’re favourites to me just in terms of what they have going for them, talent wise, but the game isn’t played on paper as we know. And they say you have to lose one to win one, but by the same token, there’s plenty of times when teams have lost one they really should have won, and then they weren’t able to put themselves in the position to win again after that. Brisbane last year. Brisbane 2015. 2001 Eels.

The Knights on the other hand have developed the habit of winning, and they never go into big games with the kind of nerves other teams would now. They’re never going to beat themselves.

I think the Roosters are the only club that seem to think games are played on paper.

You’re right about Isabelle Kelly’s attitude as a captain. The contrast between her after the loss and Temara, who lost in fairly similar circumstances couldn’t have been more stark. Temara took full responsibility for not closing out the game for the Raiders. Just a completely different attitude.

Yeah if it was tied with 5 mins to go in a GF, I’d definitely back the Knights (Tamika particularly) to get it done.

I hope it doesn’t come to that 🤞

Maroons showed how to keep chapman quiet. Give her no room and hit her hard. She gets a little quiet after that.
Thats true, although NSW halves were **** and didn’t get the ball to her or their edges.

Having said that, if the ball doesn’t come to her, she generally doesn’t go looking for it either. Shut down Lauren Brown and she won’t really see the ball at all

I was gonna say that. They didn’t find her with the ball.

Yeah she doesn’t go looking for it to be sure. But you don’t use your Ferrari in a destruction derby.

Says Jesse pleaded guilty and got a warning.

In the article it quotes her as saying she doesn't know what she did - she thought she was charged with a hip drop but they warned her about "kicking out" instead.

"I'm actually not too sure what the charge was for. I think I was charged for a hip drop but they put me on report after the kick out.

lol yeah but don’t tell that to some fans. They think Edwards is the best fullback in the world cause he runs a lot
I’ve come around on Dylbags a bit hahaha, it’s certainly handy to have a fullback who works that hard. Just need to have the points elsewhere. I was impressed by him in Origin.

Pelite is sort of the Edwards of the women’s game and she’s very valuable to the Gold Coast. Pretty handy having both the workhorse fullback and the strike centre.

Yeah don’t get me wrong, I like Edwards but I just find it funny fans that cry over the likes of Latrell, Walsh and KP not making 300 metres a game for taking hit ups and a free 20 metres off kick returns. Why on earth would you want them to?

They have skills that Edwards will never have. Yeah he works great a Penrith but we don’t have a 10 game winning streak last year with Edwards as our fullback nor do Brisbane make the GF.

That’s the great thing about Penrith I guess, they have such a well balanced team where everyone has a job to do and they all do it well.

Yeah Pelites a machine. She was awesome at centre for QLD as well. Think they’ll be good for a long time to come as most of their squad is quite young.

Couldn't happen to a 'nicer' team if it comes to pass 😉...

I've got to say that the aggression/niggle and dirt the Broncos NRLW squad try to dish out in defence at times is borderline psychotic...

Cowboys are in that same vein too, Mackesie Weale seems to thing she a 200 gamer and gets in the face of players, kicking and milking for penalties. Titans pink head gear Jorgensen is in same boat, could see her fellow teammates pulling her into line in the first game I think

Caitlin Johnson gets like this at times, say 75% of time it works in her favour, other times it ends in a lost ball or giving away a penalty.

Titans have impressed me, settling on Brown as they're half has worked great for them, she is very good at getting the team around the park and great kicking game. We don;t play thyem until late in season, but aggressive defence and being in there faces will upset them. Fuimaono doesn't seem to be getting much done as a 6 so if you cut off their momentum and don't give Brown time with Chapman, it'll go a long way to getting on top of them.

Bookies have Cowboys favourites over Eels.
I suppose it's a home game for the Cowboys, but my impression from the first 2 rounds is that the Eels are way better.

Roosters are short odds to beat Wests
Raiders are slight favourites to beat Sharks in Canberra
Titans are strong favourites to beat Broncos
Knights are $1.20 favourites to beat Saints $4.50
