Rugby league Pet Hates.

Warbs

Alex McKinnon
My pet hate, and it drives me insane, is where a player is unmarked outside of the player with the ball in a tryscoring opportunity, and for some insane reason, they don't pass, and then get tackled, or butcher the try. It's usually a Centre not passing to an unmarked Winger, but yesterday if Lucas passes, Jones is under the posts. I also have a theory, that it is not always just a case of a bad choice. With the introduction a few years ago of Supercoach, the player stats are printed everywhere. I believe some players, (from all clubs) given the option of a certain try for a teammate or probable try for themselves are taking the "I can beat the tacklers and barge over" choice. Like I said it drives me crazy, and not just when I'm watching the Knights. I was yelling at the screen about another player from whatever club over the weekend, and waiting and hoping for the coach to drag him.

If you're suggesting that players are choosing not to pass because a try is more points for their free to play super coach team, that's a pretty ludicrous suggestion.

If you're suggesting that players want to pad out their stats and a try looks better for their record than a try assist, that's not anything new, egos have existed forever and are super prevalent in sports. I know growing up I played footy with a whole lot of ball hogs, it's not a new thing and it's definitely not increased since super coach was introduced.

It's been a pet hate of mine for a while now, but pretty much nearly every time unless it's that we take a shot for a penalty goal unless it's to win the game in the 79th minute or something or we are a man down and need a breather. It has almost always backfired regardless of what the score is.

Did it a few times in that awful season that was 2022 and took a 2-0 lead early only to get absolutely flogged each time.

No, I wasn't suggesting a try is more important to their own supercoach team, that would be a ridiculous suggestion. I was more what you said about ball hogs. Yes, I know it's not a new thing. I have been watching Rugby League for over 50 years, and played both League and Union. It just seem in my opinion to be happening more. Maybe it's not but I know I've reacted to it a lot more in the last few seasons, and I'm talking all sides, not one team in particular.

Just keep an eye on Manu and Tedesco at the Rorters, they don’t pass as a rule, even when players are in a position to score.
Young Dom will score opportunist tries this year, but very few outside Manu.
Have a look .

My pet hate is play-the-ball area, dropped or incorrect play.
My opinion is that if tackle is completed ball is dead until played so anything occurring between them is irrelevant unless deliberate illegal play by defender. Attacker should be made to play or replay the ball and play to continue without possession changing will reduce those iffy calls of hands or pushing in the play the ball.

My pet hate is when going for a tackle the player makes contact with a pass and it's a 6 again. It should be the same as a kick, if they don't play at it, it should be play on. Drives me mad.
This is my number 1. Makes me so mad!

My pet hate is when the ref brings the players back 11-12m, in consecutive sets.

There's no recourse and it's criminal. I don't understand how they get away with it

I know but when they used to get the calls wrong (saying not played at when it clearly was) you would feel so aggrieved, I feel like Joey’s disagreement with the touchie in 2006 may have been the catalyst for the change in the first place.

May be the best use of the captain challenge

Yeah I feel like they get 99% of those right, the player is almost always playing at the ball in that circumstance. And good call about Joey's touchie blow up! 😂

Players who don't play the ball with their foot ... and seemingly are not even making an attempt to. It's not hard.
I played for about 17yrs and playing it was never a problem. These guys are professional and somehow don't seem to know how to do it. I hate seeing the casual rollback-while-stepping-over-the-ball.

It's that one second of difference so the hooker can get a forward over the ad line or catch a marker napping. It's not being policed after being heavily done so a couple years ago. The players learn quick what they can get away with.

Another pet peeve of mine is the obstruction rule. Blokes you know that WILL not get there milking it.
100% agreed on this one too.

And while we're on that: Milking. Fullstop. Hate it. Soccer do it and it looks ridiculous. They roll around in agony like they've been shot, 30secs later they're perfectly okay. I really hope League player acting skills never descend down to their levels.

The crusher ‘milk’ is one of the biggest cons going around over the last few seasons and the refs/bunker review buy right into it…it is becoming a bit of a blight on the game to milk a penalty

I disagree.
It was a dangerous practice to put pressure on the neck, and now that players make it clear when they feel pressure on the neck, every tackler tries to avoid doing it, which is a good outcome.
Same with hip drop tackles. It's become very clear that a huge number of leg injuries have come from hip drops over the years, and now guys are trying hard to avoid doing it, which can only be a good thing.

Yeah I agree with you Billy. They have been over zealous and players have definitely milked it, but the outcome has been we’ve seen a lot less. Alex McKinnon shows the potential danger in being put in that position, although his was from a tackle … but overall seeing less crushers is a great outcome. Worth the pain of a few extra penalties along the way!
