Dom Young discussion

Sam Thaiday did a little interview with Michael Hancock yesterday and asked him how he won so many titles. Hancock answered right place at the right time and (said very quickly and quietly) *no salary cap* - end of interview.
First time I've heard anyone say that out loud, although everyone knew Brisbane and Bennett spent whatever they wanted and the salary cap was a joke in those days.

So I’m a bit bummed he’s leaving us for the feathered grubs and did some digging and found these three articles. Keep in mind Clint Zammit was our recruitment manager, I found his words on Knights looking to retain him looks locked in, then his sudden departure and then ends up working for the chooks! I think it’s interesting, could be nothing? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Some will say, “yeah but his brother is over there blah blah blah”, I get that but if that’s all it was going to take to keep him here then I’m sure Newcastle could have found a job for the guy.

Young signed with the Roosters over a month before Zammit left, maybe Zammit got the boot because he couldn’t retain Dom.

That's not a stab at you BTW. More just that there a LOT of posts on here about Dom leaving in various threads. He's playing out of his mind though, so I'd prefer that it not be rubbed in constantly that he's leaving us haha.

Nah I get it. I guess Zammit left 6 months ago but I knew he was no good long before that and thought it was possible there was some wool being pulled over the eyes where he was concerned… or it was nothing at all.

Anyway, who cares.

what's the info on him? I thought he was responsible for the Cowgirls winning roster ( that and some nicely priced Townsville real estate deals )

I still wouldn't fall off my chair if there was something to your above implication.

I looked into him nearly an year after he came on board because I didn’t know why we weren’t recruiting anything outside of Cowboys reserve graders. I didn’t learn much besides that he was still living in Townsville and his profile picture on Linkedin was a photo of him in his cowboys gear. Not one or two weeks or months after joining, almost a year. I thought that was a poor look considering he worked for us, but his job was to recruit guys to come to Newcastle even though the place wasn’t up to his own standards. A sub par performance which I thought Wests were equally at blame.

I don’t know if anything untoward otherwise was going on, (us plebs are very rarely privy to that kind of information) but I didn’t like that at all. Interesting though that soon after Peter Parrs arrival he soon skipped out and things have turned for the better, plus recruitment has expanded outside of the one North Queensland club.

Ok yeh not a great look. Bit hard to sell the club and region when he doesnt live locally.

Do we even have a new recruitment guy yet? Maybe Parr is filling that role for now. I reckon Browny would have made a far better recruitment officer than a coach. If he is unemployed that's who I'd be calling.
 
Don't know how you can say things have turned for the better since Zammit left. Hastings, Gamble, Marzhew, Elliott all signed while he was at the helm and now all key players for our best season in a long time, and some of our best juniors coming through were brought in by him too. Cogger & Cartwright are the signings since he left.

Listening to Tooheys podcast Elliot had previously called AOB directly and asked about joining the Knights.
 
does anyone know why the recruitment Tzar Zammit is gonski ? if he is so good the Rorters gave him a job, why did Wests say bye bye

The rumour is Peter Parr doesn't like how much he has bent the salary cap out of shape by paying overs to the two English kiddies coming next year. Paid on potential to make sure they ended up here apparently.

He went in Parr's restructure because Parr and Dobson look after recruiting seniors (Parr) and juniors (Dobson)

This Parr guy sounds well connected from what I've read. Hopefully he can sort out the shortfall in 3rd parties etc.

Given what the Knights are competing against off the field it makes the on field success all that more amazing and satisfying. Against all odds.

TBF Parr wanted Hastings too, was really really concerned about a potential Brooks/Ponga partnership. AOB admits he wanted Brooks and Parr talked him around. Jackson is at the club because of Parr more than anyone else.

Also the caution around Jackson is more to do with his off-field reputation rather than his on-field performance. Whatever else you might say about Luke Brooks, he’s widely liked. Parr can pull the trigger on a player like Hastings and bring people along with him because he has a proven track record at managing big personalities and providing guidance to wayward young men. By all appearances though we needn’t have worried, Jackson seems very popular with our playing group (whereas I have it on very good authority most people at the Tigers were off him).
