Toohey's News

While zero evidence is provided 😭

'Takes one look at the Broncos top 20, opens calculator app on IPhone, does simple math, math doesn't even come close to working,

I apologise for not having the audited financials to publish here for your review to evidence my claim.
Majority of their top 20 have come through the ranks and are likely still on their rookie or at most 2nd deals that were signed before they became rep standard.

19/8
David Armstrong has been added to top 30 for next year.
Toni Tupounina's contract has been bought out for next year.
Toohey gives the full list of signed players for next year that includes David Armstrong, Riley Jones, Ryan Rivett, Paul Bryan and Myles Martin - all guys not listed in the official NRL list.
Dan Saifiti has lost 3 or 4 kilos in the last month and looked very good for it in the last game. Toohey tips him to go even better tomorrow.
Toohey worries that the big game atmosphere could see Latrell play well. He says Latrell and Cody Walker are the dangers.

I'm on night shift, so got the tooheys news nice and early

- Speaks of knights not to disrespect Marz when it comes to both, contract upgrade and signing a winger replacement for Dom.
Oates demanding 500k, which is he believes Marz should get upgraded too. Currently Marz is on 160k, next yr its 220k then 250k in 25'.
Suggest knights should go for a young talent from rival clubs (Jenkins) on a lower deal.

- Touches on Jones being resigned with Miller going. Final two spots for 24 season will be outside backs

- Michael Monaghan is leaving to join Hasler at Titans opening a coaching role up for CUP.
Mentions could be a step for Ronny Griffiths if he wants to leave the NRLWs position, which would obviously need replacing
Michael Dobson apparently has a desire to coach as well, which would require another/additional Pathways coach if he became CUP coach.

- Reiterated Bradman Best is eager to sign well before Nov 1 comes around.

100% about Marz. It's either he or Crossland for Player of the Yr for me. He deserves a financial bonus.
I've cooled right off Oates, he's kidding if he wants that $$ and Knights be mental to use that money on him.
Already been mentions of Jenkins from Penrith, I'd still look at Iro, but he's more a centre, bar any of that see what the off season brings for McCarthy. He looks very promising.

Shame about Monaghan, hard to know what quality coach you may have for just one yr but clearly had one foot out the door for sometime. CUP team had a lot of juniors playing this yr, so difficult to assess.
Love to see Ron get the gig and continue to rise in Knights coaching ranks. Not sure who the assistants are for NRLW, but need to continue the quality level coaching for them.

Pathways is so important, but can't imagine its being terrible if an already full time coach is employed to coach that it'd hinder too much, along with widening the pathways assitants.

Anywho BRING ON SUNDAY!!!!

It's hard to judge what Monaghan has delivered as reserve grade coach because we have cut a heap of good players who they decided didn't have firstgrade potential, so he has had a very young squad to work with all year, but you just don't get the feeling that he has had the impact on young players that coaches like Andrew Ryan, Todd Lowrie or Matt Lantry have had over the years, or even the impact Garth Brennan had last year.

Couldn’t disagree more re: Oates and Marzhew. Corey made it as an NRL player as a teenager and, while his form has been a little up and down, he’s been an Origin-calibre winger for almost ten years basically. Marzhew has never been able to hold onto a first grade jersey due to massive holes in his game - which I wouldn’t say he’s completely ironed out, but he has improved a lot - until he came to us. He’s not even relevant as an NRL player without our intervention, so WE should reward HIM? Makes no sense.

He’ll get more money on his next contract, but the idea that a guy who’s had one good season is instantly worth a comparable amount to a guy who’s proven as a long-term NRL player kind of sums up everything wrong with how people think about this sport, and giving guys a lot of money purely because of outside noise about them is where clubs routinely go wrong.

Only concern with Oats is his age. And with his size age will hit his athleticism like a truck over the short to medium term. Given that we need our edges lightning fast I'm not convinced he is the right/ best winger for us to drop 500k on.

We should be looking for a fast young talent like a Will Warbrick and tossing lesser money at that type of project with a high probability of success.

Also, Pryce probably gonna slot in on that wing next year anyway. Fast and a big body.

For what Oates offers at $500k and what Tuala offers at $150k, I don't think there's a big enough difference to justify the price disparity
I think Tuala has got a far bit of speed and is quite a good finisher i think he would go decent enough on the end of the sweeping plays we have been doing on that side of the field.

The biggest worry is coming out of trouble his carrys are nowhere as good as Doms.

Yeah, I don't know we can replace all of what Dom does well, we are going to have to pick a couple of areas. To me, he is excellent coming off our line, great in the air and as a finisher, and can make a break himself with sheer speed, either by circling the opposition or off a Gags pass. It makes him sound like best bits of Marz, the fox and Tupou rolled in to one. So, if I was going to choose one of them to replace him, I'd go another Marz. Great off our line and can finish. The pure speed and aerial threat are a luxury, those two areas are more important and probably easiest to replicate.

500k for an injury-prone, slow Oates that currently hasn't scored a try this season off the back of one of the most offensively talented backlines in the league would likely be a rather poor investment.

His yardage is elite, no arguments here at all - even now that he's slow and injury prone he still has some of the best early set carries going around. While Dom's yardage is an excellent bonus his finishing is his best feature. His 145m average per game isn't so egregiously large that we can't cover that contribution, particularly when you've got Marzhew who is hyper-elite in yardage and Best/Gagai who contribute significantly as well.

Our success is built off a backline that can finish and create opportunities anywhere on the field, each backline player represents a genuine threat that takes the heat off KP - defensive lines can't afford to mark KP harder than the others because if you give Marzhew, Best, Gagai or Young space they will end you on their own. Oates in his present state doesn't fit that bill.

I'm still big on Robert Derby from the Cows as a high-ceiling youth option, would certainly prefer him to Jenkins as has been thrown around recently. Moceidreke's exploits with the cup side this season should certainly put him in the frame with a chance if he sticks around for preseason. Oates is back today for the Broncs, unless he can show something in the way of pace and finishing for the rest of the season then I'd be very happy to put a line through him.

I think upgrade Marz contract at end of 24 if he cranks up another notch. Also don’t think $500k is sensible for Oates. Would rather go for the young gun on market (if one exists) and ensure we nail down Best. Tell Marz there’s cash for him in a longer contract if he nails 24.
