Kalyn Ponga discussion

I highly doubt that the Knights would send Ponga to Canada to try and prove his not fit to play NRL anymore. I also don’t think he’d be happy to go to Canada for that purpose either. It may well end up he has to retire but I think quite clearly the purpose of this trip is to give him the best chance to come back.

It's a diagnostic test, and the world's best practice.
There are two possible outcomes.
Yes he can recover and play.
No he can't recover and play.
Either way they have a result that no one can argue against.
 
He’s owed at least $5 million and likely more if he has to medically retire, I suspect the insurance company would want some pretty good evidence that it’s necessary. I don’t think any of the other guys who’ve had to medically retire have had a contract this big with this much to run on it before.
 
Sounds to me like he is done and dusted and the Knights will wait another 20 years for the next superstar

The money he brings the club from merch alone is makes his 1.5m a year deal look like peanuts 🥜 to the club.

If they retire him medically they will lose a lot of money.

But they already have the McManus case to deal with too
 
Im thinking he is going there to get these markers to either show these concussions are affecting him and seriously consider whether to retire, or to get these markers baselined now to check it in future if further concussions arise.

Testing or no testing, he cant keep getting concussions and keep playing.

If the medical advice is he has to retire, the Knights won't have any choice in the matter.

Kalyn Ponga set to return

The nib Newcastle Knights, in conjunction with independent concussion consultants, have reviewed all available information and have approved for Kalyn Ponga to return to rugby league.

Good news, but this is going to be a cloud hanging over his head forever unfortunately. It's going to be nerve wracking watching him return to the field. The conversations are going to return immediately the moment he cops another one.

Same with likes of Keary and Papi. So far Keary gone well, can only hope same is said for KP and Paps.
 
Ponga big concerns, he has the ability, can be a match winner, sure he has been cleared to play BUT
what of his mindset, his concerns about further HIA, his long term effects of injuries especially further incidents.
His ability to override the possible consequences of further incidents, his ability to enjoy the fruits of his on going achievements.
Will he be the player who tackles and runs with little or no concern for his own welfare where winning and setting up plays is the overriding concern or will he be hesitant, unsure making him a lesser player than he is.
No matter how it works out I hope that consideration and understanding come into play especially for his first few weeks back.
Never been a huge Ponga fan, don’t know if that is due to money spent or loss of time on paddock due to injuries but talent he has.
I hope it all goes well for him which means it will all go well for us, fans, if not I hope he is ok

I think to start the game he would be but once he gets into the game it wouldn't I think the competitive instincts would kick in
 
I can’t remember if Luke Keary came back straight into the starting side. I think he did. But I could see with Ponga bringing him on off the bench into 6 after the first 20 or so not a bad idea.

Until he feels more confident. But it’s hard to say what he and club thinks. I would understand if they did that as an option.
 
The last 3 or 4 games have shown us how our current squad can be a top 4 side.
It is basically based on 17 players going as hard as they can with high energy and being as physical as possible in every contact.
Ponga doesn't play that style.
For me, the question is, how do we re-introduce Ponga with his skills based on elusive runs and skilful passing into a team that is winning by just going hard and fast and out competing sides physically.
I'm struggling to think how we can put him in without losing some of the physicality that is working for us now.
