Jackson Hastings

This is such a key point I think some are missing. Hastings will be 27 when next season kicks off, and plays a position where you commonly see players stay good until they're 33 and sometimes even older - and it's also pretty common for players in that position to actually reach the peak of their powers in their 30's. Klemmer will be 29 and plays a position where it's very rare for guys to stay good past the age of 31-32 (and if you don't think he's already greatly diminished from the force he was about 5-8 years ago I don't know what to tell you). Klemmer is a declining asset and I strongly suspect any deal with Wests would involve us paying freight on Klemmer & paying Hastings' full contract - and I still think we're making out like bandits in this scenario.

Hastings wouldn't be being looked at a short-term, late career rental. Assuming things go okay relationships-wise, the club would expect to get at least 6 years out of him and possibly even longer given 2/3rds of his footy has been played at lower intensity in a much less physical league. If we pick him up, he's our long-term 7.

Hastings at 27 and never held down a spot in the NRL or Klemmer a proven high quality forward still playing at a high level. Easy decision to make there.

Klemmer leaves and a forward leader and metre eater will be required on the shopping list for said half brought in. The quality in halves available is already low (said by many if not all on here) so getting said half with no forward leader just leaves you back at square one ie a missing piece in the side but with a lesser quality player in the team.

edit: Looks all but done so will be interesting to see how both parties end up next season.

Klemmer ran for the most metres of any knights player this past season, 2793m at 155m a game ranking him 53rd in the comp overall for run metres. Only 4 forwards that ran for more metres then him averaged more metres per game and they were Haas, big Tino, Tapine and Taumalolo…

We don't need one person to carry Klemmers load we need the entire team to step up and help out, safs, backrowers, Elliot, outside backs the young guys off the bench.

I agree but how many years has it been now where fans have been waiting for the Safs especially to up the load and be more consistent?

I think Elliott will be the walk up leader now and he did play some good footy after signing the Knights contract but that was behind Big Papa and Tapine so is he able to transfer that into next year behind the Safs with his quick leg speed?

From all reports Klemmer have been wanting out of the club for awhile.
We have a lot of money tied up in our forwards that have never dominated an opposition pack.. something had to give.
No point keeping a player that doesn’t want to be here… plus Hastings is an upgrade on Clune and Gamble.
Sad to lose Klemmer but we didn’t win any forward battle with him in the side either.
Personally I would have let one of the Safiti brothers or Frizell go.

No doubt klems metres will need to be evened out but think what the safs and klem have in common are they bend the line and don't break the line and I think they needed to get rid of one cause to many of they same gets easy for defence lines to adjust to hopefully they look at a Spencer leniu type of player with the cash that klems frees up now and we've got a couple of good young props coming thru that they've got to Start giving a chance to just like the cows did if oryin Keely starts playing well I could see they give him a bench spot and after 30 mins move frizzel into the middle for more leg speed

Klemmer on 800k is crazy. Will get a decent front rower for half that 😉

Unlikely that Safs x 2 or Frizell were interested, can’t make them leave.
Klem leaving because he wants a longer career than Knights wanted from him.
Its not good but it is what it is

I agree regarding the Safs or Frizell bit. Frizell seems like the veteran forward on his last legs in contrast to Klemmer.

Would of been interesting to see if the Knights offered Klemmer a multi year extension which is what he was after according to reports if he would stay or if the damage was done already and he just wanted out. Something had to give as you say, I just don’t think letting Klemmer walk out the door is the greatest of outcomes.

True they are 3 very similar prop forwards. I think rumours have Leniu going to the Dogs or Tigers if he leaves Penrith I believe. Would be a good get though for any club.

Keely did look good in that U20’s origin game this year. Looked to be one that would be a protector out on the edge for his half and not a line breaking forward. Haven’t seen him in reserves though so judging off of one game.

As long as they aren’t any of the Cowboys young guns I wish you the best. Think Leniu is going for around that price range so he would be a good get.

I think we've now made some pretty good moves.
Essentially swapped Barnett for Elliot -- minor upgrade
Swapped Klem for Hetherington --- small downgrade, but balances our cap, overall a lateral move
Swapped Clifford for Hastings -- major upgrade

I still think we'll struggle this year because our forward depth is either very young or **** (Jones, Fitz). Ideally we'll sign a vertern 2nd rower and prop.

2024 is when we'll see a big step up from this squad, with those young guys getting better, getting rid of dead weight (Tuala, that **** big center from reserves, hopefully fitz and jones) and get KPP and Pryce here.

This is great news, definitely sets up some groundwork for a more competitive squad in coming years.

Klemmer was great for us, but if the Saifiti's can't step up now they never will - time to find out. We can't spend that much of our cap on frontrowers. Them taking the World Cup off tells me they're in for a big season.

I think frizzle time on a edge is coming to a end but think a move to the middle would be good for him think his late foot work and leg speed would be awesome in the middle
