Ex-Knights Watch

I wouldn’t go as far to say Maloney is a “has been”. Very much a winner and a competitor despite losing this one.
He is well past it and had a shocking game. Josh Drinkwater who was a journeyman here with a handful of FG games was by far the batter half in that game. Says it all.

There’s plenty of the forwards who’d do alright over here. The creative players and outside backs are a level below though.

By plenty of forwards you mean the ones that couldn’t beat out Linnett in the team of the year including one Sione Mata’utia?

Also with Kasiano being named in that same team. We all saw how useless he was when he moved abroad.

Just watching today the likes of Walmsley, Garcia, Welsby and McMeeken all looked to me to be NRL quality talents.

So by plenty we get only 4 names.

Garcia? That guy who signed a 2 year contract with the Panthers and didn’t last a season before crawling back to the super league without playing a single game in FG out here?

Walmsley would get torn apart over here now. He is one that should of tested himself 5 years ago.

Welsby looks to have potential so will be interesting to see him progress over the next couple years.

McMeeken looked like a stock standard back rower. Didn’t stand out no more than Sione and we know how ordinary he was when out here.

I’ll bow to your all knowing knowledge then. Of course you know absolutely everything.

All 4 looked like good players to me in addition to guys like Sione and Paasi who have played plenty of First Grade in Australia. I mean they’re no Mitchell Dunn or Lachlan Burr but who is?

Sione and Paasi who are both over there during their prime years? Says exactly the quality they posses as both would be in reserves back over here.

Plenty of hypotheticals in this chat. Everyone entitled to their opinion but there’s no right or wrong while it remains hypothetical.

The great unknown with ESL players is how well they'll go when they get a chance to train at NRL level.
Josh Hodgson was an average to good player in the ESL, but once he got to train with all the extra facilities and staff available to NRL clubs, his fitness levels were just crazy.
Some guys will improve a little bit, and some guys will improve a lot.
I don't think it's worth the gamble because you want those guys to improve 20% or more on ESL form, and a lot of them do with the better training, but a lot of them don't too.

The ESL has the opposite problem when they sign NRL players. They can't predict who will keep their form and who will turn to **** with less training.

Haven’t had a chance to watch the game, looking forward to seeing Sione, Kevin and Jimmy in action as always enjoyed them playing. Too much knocking them for what they are, we’re, could have been, they have all played the game strongly, been good players/people and admired by many so nice to see those achieving and sadness for those that didn’t quite make it.
Can only assume that nothing nice said is as much a dig to stir things up rather than anything else and I guess my comments will be seen as confirmation of that.

There’s been plenty of ESL players who’ve come over here and been really good in the NRL. It’s proven to be a good place to recruit from, and even if it is a “reserve grade quality” competition, it’s actually only likely to be a smarter place to pull players from over the next few years given that a lot of NRL reserve graders (particularly in NSW) have missed a huge amount of footy over the last couple of years.

If we picked up someone like Mike McMeeken I’d be very pleased, he’s proven to be one of the best in his position in England, and I’d take him at the moment over some of the NRL plodders off contract for next year. It’d be great to yoink some hidden gem from some other club’s 20’s or something but the fact is if we did that we’d be getting a player whose development has been badly stalled unfortunately.

French club Toulouse have won promotion to the ESL next season with star players ex Kurri Kurri fullback Mark Kheirallah and ex Knights juniors Jonathon Ford and Mitch Garbutt.
Jono Ford was a giant fullback with a lot of errors in his game at the Knights, but he has been a 6'6" half or 5/8 for the last 4 or 5 years at Toulouse and has been a remarkable player for them.
Mark Kheirallah led Kurri to a real NRL title playing alongside Nathan Ross and went on to play for France. He was the best player in the real NRL in the time he was here.

Todays Tele, Zac Hosking, Bronco’s to “”””unearth boom back rower”””” in this weekend trial match
I hope he goes well.
For the last several years he has been working fulltime as a tradie and still pumping out numbers as good as any of our top 30 guys playing reserve grade - so a full NRL pre season should have him ready to go.
