A shoulder charge and a shoulder charge where the defender leaves the ground so he can hit the player high with the shoulder are two completely different things .
Its even worse when the defender doesnt give a **** if the whistle has been blown or not and still tries to take the player out of the game .

I thought the worst part of it, was that it was after the whistle and he relaxed. Hence why he was sent. If Ponga can hear the whistle with head gear on and facing away from the Ref, then I’m sure Townsend heard it.

Serves him right in the first place, notice how nobody else got off the line with him? It was a dog shot plain and simple, and clearly a tactic in the game to rough him up. The idiot shouldn’t have been trying to shoulder charge in the first place.

Yep. Pretty straight forward I would think. Send off for sure. Its a shame the media knobs dont look at the intent and back get the ref, all the media want to do is bring refs down and look for the controversy to sell clicks.
 
Was certainly a send-off for mine. Townsend may as well have just run up to Ponga and punched him in the face. Made the win all the sweeter in the end, flogging those drug merchants with Gallen watching on, and knowing that at least a couple of key players will be spending 2-3 weeks out while their season is on the line :lol:

In that case then Townsend would of hit him high at least haha. Might of made the send of worth it from his point of view pending how hard and can throw them.
 
My position on send offs is pretty clear in my mind, regardless of the charge/incident...if the incident is clearly done with intent and warrants a player missing games in subsequent weeks then a send off is warranted.

The problem with the structure of the judiciary penalties handed out for intentional illegal play is that the only teams that don't get 'compensated' for the infraction are the team that the infraction is perpetrated on...for example, I thing Saulo should have been sent off for the hit on Jahrome Hughes (not just sin binned).

In these instances, I'm still happy for the referees to have the discretion to consider 'intent' as a factor as they do now (and yes, it usually corresponds with the level of damage done to the opposing player)but if they consider the intent is clearly evident (Saulo and Townsend both fit that criteria for mine) then they should be marched. At least the team that has been disadvantaged receives some level of 'benefit' for the transgression that has been inflicted directly upon them.

Well said. I think the outcome the grub and the other grubs wanted was a Ponga HIA and possible fail. That’s him gone. If you do the math.....they may not have expected a send off but the 10 mins in the bin for taking out our star fullback for the whole game is a calculated risk. There was so much intent and the point you make about the line otherwise remaining in place just makes it look more fishy.

Media mongrels will always run with what’s most controversial. In this case it’s a double for them. The fact and the argument for otherwise. Tossers.

John Morris said in the post match presser that he saw a chance to change the momentum of the game and took it - which is a nice way of saying he got Ponga in the cross hairs and took the shot.
Townsend would have only been trying to pull off a big hit, or maybe give away a penalty at worst, and if Ponga had seen him coming and took some evasive action and braced for it, I think it would have just been a penalty, but Townsend rolled the dice and came up craps - lucky to just get 3 weeks for it.

Yeah I agree, I couldn’t believe the commentators saying it’s not worth a send off. The tackle looked bad, because the whistle had gone. He may as well done it as he was running up the tunnel at half time.

Yeah I don’t know why they even play to that tactic? Teams try and rough him up all the time, he’s as tough as nails, and he shows it time after time.

Paul Green showed the best way to take him out, don’t kick it to him.

Not kicking to him won't do anything. He is not very dangerous running the ball back from a kick on most occasions. He is most dangerous attacking their line with ball in hand.

100% this. Watching it live (on Fox, not at the ground), I was yelling send off before the ref was talking to the bunker. It was late, reckless, he left the ground, made no attempt at all to tackle him - I was stunned when some of the commentary thought the send off was harsh. I was seriously questioning my own biases.
 
I watched it again too and Ponga the Knights and the rest of the Sharkies team all stopped when the whistle went off all but 1 bloke heard it and stopped .
