Says the best signing he made was Aiden Guerra, not Ponga, because Guerra attracted Pearce, who attracted Klemmer, and now Frizzel.

Also points out the importance of breeding your own players and says some of the clubs struggling are not producing enough of their own.

One of the worst things to come out of this year is how we have our strongest ever junior base and all those guys are missing a year of football development. Not only guys who are close like Sasagi, Searle, Toa, Black, Huth, Nicholson, Russell etc - but our under 18s squad who won under 16s last year in record breaking fashion and were unbeaten and top of the table in under 18s when the comp was suspended.

Yeah I agree, but he must have been doing something right to get so many players on board. So his reputation around the league must not be that bad.

it seemed to nose dive fairly quickly, looking back we lost a lot of very close games and makes you wonder if we had won them we probably would have made finals.

I don’t believe he ever fixed our defensive issues. To early for O’Brien yet but hopefully this is the new normal

There were early signs with Brown that players just weren't improving under him. Even he seemed to recognise it and started buying only players with firstgrade level skills already.

There are early signs with O'Brien that players do improve under him. I'd go as far as saying that everyone seems to have improved in 1 off season.

Just last week we saw 3 young guys who I don't think would have made the grade under Brown come into firstgrade and killed it in their first game.

To be a successful coach takes more than just having an idea on tactics (though I don't think Brown had a great amount of ability there either), you also have to be a good man manager, and you have to have the ability to make players want to play for you, or at least motivate the players to play for themselves and their mates next to them.

Brown started well but slowly eroded the playing groups will to play for him to breaking point. Certain comments made in to the media and in after match pressers wouldn't have sat well with players and a resentment built up from that which I believe culminated in the player revolt we saw.

And who knows what went on behind the scenes.

You want to talk about players improving under OB vs Brown, just look at the Penrith game. There is no way in any season under Brown, would we have had the grit to dig deep and come away with a draw from that. Likely it would have been a 30+ point drubbing. They had every reason to run up the white flag, no Ponga, no fitz, no barney, Pearce and Watson gone early, players picking up knocks during the game etc.

No chance we see that under Brown.

With Dogs and Drags surely looking at new coaches surely his the right man. Both are carbon copies of us pre Brown underperforming and overpaid. Maybe just lacking the entitlement our lads had.

He has already coached the Dragons and I can't see him landing back there. The Dragons faithful would be up in arms replacing Mary with Brown. Any anyhow, Flannigan has the inside running on that job.

Dogs maybe to oversea a rebuild. I had him pegged for taking over at NZ, but with the Covid19 stuff and the Warriors making all these sacrifices I don't think there is much of an apetite for changing coaches at the Warriors at the moment.

V’landys has already stated Flanagan’s head coaching ban will be upheld even though his punishment is pretty soft to begin with. Which I think was 2022 anyway so it’s time to find another coach if they aren’t performing.

Think Pay should be given more of a chance with a decent roster when the Bulldogs can sign players (2021?), but unfair to expect to be better in comparison to the Dragons but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as us a few years ago but I guess it depends on the board.

The Warriors still look like a headless chook most of the time on the field but their situation is rare atm so they’ll and Kearney probably get a free pass for this season.

As for Brown, I guess he has a point where up until their present I don’t recall at any point in our history that were were able to bring in as many high profile players as we have been now during his time at the Knights.
Even going back to the lesser high profile guys who were squeezed out of other clubs such as SKD and Glabsy who are representative players and have won premiereships.

Unvle Benny brought a lot in but, alas, they were the Lavender Hill mob ready for superannuation and for the old age pension.

Probably, but those high profile players Bennett bought in were probably high profile 10 years ago

Aside from Boyd. I don't know how high profile guys like Scott/Cuthbertson were.

Brown deserves credit for some of his recruiting, but he also signed up some shockers as well.
He also deserves credit for encouraging the lower grades. At one point he had recent NRL players coaching all our lower grades (Kostjaysyn U16s, Dureau U18s, Lowrie U20s, Woolford reserve grade) and we are reaping the rewards of that now.
One disturbing thing about O'Brien is that he has quietly sucked all the resources out of lower grades, farming out the coaching to unpaid local guys, and using all the resources for firstgrade.
The last guy to do that was Brian Smith, and we didn't produce any juniors of note for 10 years after Smith.

I liked Browny for his recruiting should be the GM for a club like Titans, plus his shots on Bennet was great hahahah
He stayed when times were hell when others would have jumped ship got my respect for that.

Payten apparently

A bit of a poison chalice in the current environment...

Some players P!$$3D re dumping of Kearney and all of them likely to be getting very homesick by now, missing wives, kids, family, etc. and the true likelihood is they will not be competitive in the short term, which will deflate their mental state even further...

Good luck to him and I genuinely feel for the players and the club but I think things will get worse for the Warriors for quite some time before they get better

I think Brown did a fantastic job with getting our roster together, although keep in mind all of the hand grenades that we missed out on, such as Jack Bird, TPJ, Jarrod Wallace and others (if the reporting of our interest in those players at the time was true). Can't get every decision right, but was probably lucky that we missed out on those players.
