KNIGHTS | Connor Watson and Chris Randall set to duel for injured star Jayden Brailey's hooking spot

Newcastle Knights
Star Knights utility Connor Watson and rookie hooker Chris Randall will go head-to-head when training resumes in a personal duel to decide who grabs Jayden Brailey's No9 starting jumper.

Watson has been widely tipped to secure the hooking role in the rebooted competition after the luckless Brailey was ruled out for the season following a knee reconstruction.

But coach Adam O'Brien has revealed to the Newcastle Herald he is yet to decide who will be his starting dummy half and even hinted he may go with a 'like-for-like' hooker in Randall because Watson is such a threat off the bench.

"I think the four week training period in terms of team connection leading up to our first game back will determine whether we go with Randy or Connor," O'Brien said.

"Both of those guys are going to see some footy at nine, I know that much. But which one starts and which one doesn't, I'm not too sure at this stage."

Watson has the advantage of having done an outstanding job last season whenever he was shifted into the hooking role while Randall is yet to debut in the NRL and the club will need to be granted special dispensation if he is to play before June 30 because he is still only on a development contract.

But Watson's versatility and his tremendous impact off the bench could go against him when the final decision is made.

"Connor was probably one of our better performers in the two games we played to kick the season off," O'Brien said. "He's such a hard guy to coach against when he is playing that role [off the bench] for us.

"In the Tigers game, you've only got to look at the tackle breaks he made and just how dangerous he was and none of it was really scripted, it was just Connor being Connor.

"So I'm mindful of losing two positions by moving Connor. Sometimes you just have to go with like-for-like - put a hooker in for a hooker.

"That's something that we might contemplate but until we get back and have a look at them, ultimately the decision will be about what's best for the team - it won't be about what's best for the individual. That will be the way I go."

O'Brien admitted the loss of Brailey is a real blow to the side but they needed to move on.

"He's a great young player and it's really disappointing for him and it's disappointing for us as a club," he said. "But at the same time there is an opportunity now for Randy and Connor.

"Jayden had such a good pre-season and he is such an integral part of our side and you don't disrespect people by saying it's okay, we simply just move on.

"But at the same time, we have spoken about being a resilient footy team and this is one of the challenges that we are forced to face and we need to get on with it."

The hooking spot won't be the only quandary for O'Brien with the return from injury of powerhouse teenage centre Bradman Best likely to make things interesting for incumbent Enari Tuala on the left edge.

Tuala didn't put a foot wrong in the opening two games of the season, scoring two tries against the Tigers.

We need to spend a fair chunk of the month training getting Randall up to speed working with Pearce.
Even if Watson starts, we'll still need Randall on the bench, and if Watson is out for any reason, Randall is our only choice.
I'd have Searle training at hooker as well, and maybe even Crossland - just in case.

Am I the only one that is sick of the player carry on? In a way I'd laugh my arse off if the NRL folded all together and those knobs had to look for a real job.

Your Cam's, DCE's, Tapau's, BJ's, Latrells ect.

Seeing what flea's they are is really sickening.

Edit = V'Landy's should just call their boycott BS and pull the plug on everything until they come crawling back cap in hand.

Get rid of the ones whinging and replace them with reserve graders who wouldn’t be getting any footy this year.

Add Fox to that as well. They want the same the same discount as nine because they will struggle for advertising revenue? Tell them to shove it, see how they go with advertisers when they have no content therefore no subscribers. I can understand nines argument to some extent, but it isn't the same for fox.

Cam Smith has had his career and made his $$$. Couldn't give a rats what his opinion is, especially given how he chose to play his career. I wish the whinging cheat would just retire already. I'm pretty sure he just plays on to annoy me...

Having said all that, I admire what the warriors have done already to try and accommodate the game. I hope they are looked after and comfortable with the outcome.

They might go alright for the rest of the season. 0-2, if they turn up with that mindset I think they could cause some problems.

I hope Storm go to absolute ****e, Roosters miss the 8 and we beat Canberra in the GF. What a season...

Chris Randall would be working harder than anyone now that he knows he is very close to getting that firstgrade spot.
We know that he showed up for his first firstgrade off season as our second fittest player, just behind Connor Watson, who had also trained hard before the pre season to impress the new coach.
We only have 1 game of reserve grade to judge how much progress Randall made in the off season. In that 1 game, he played 79 minutes, made 47 tackles, ran 95 metres and got 65 fantasy points.
He's had better games than that in the past, but his average is about 35 tackles, 60 metres and 42 fantasy points per game, so he was way above his career average.
Big chance for him to make a career for himself, and I really think he will be training like his whole life depends on it now.

What do you reckon? Do you think he's ready?

He's fit enough.
His passing game from dummy half is nothing special, but as good as Watson's or better, and he has time to work hard on it.
He has a good short kicking game, which gives us another option.
His defence looks good in reserve grade, but you never know if guys are up to holding their own in the wrestle in first grade till they do it.
We have the luxury of using Watson for as many minutes as we need to - so if Randall is only good for 20 minutes, we can use Watson for 60, but if by some miracle that Randall can crank out a quality 80 minutes, we can use Watson for impact at either lock or 5/8.
But if Watson goes down, it's Randall for as many minutes as he can and maybe Mann or Crossland to help him out.

Anyway, we don't really have a choice, Randall needs to step up and do as well as he can.

He'll never be more ready, it's now or never for him. A lot of good young hookers at the club so if he doesn't do it now, it's park footy and a full time job. I think he'll be fine. He is certainly fit enough. He doesn't need to overplay his hand with Pearce and Ponga in the side. He'll be given a simple plan to carry out for as long as possible. I do think Watson was awesome coming off the bench so I'd like to see him continue there. I just have it in the back of my head that Obi told Watson he will be the 9 once the comp starts again, I'm not sure he will go back on that.

I think they'll have Watson as starting hooker in game 1 and bring Randall off the bench, but if Randall does well and can do decent minutes, they will eventually have him starting and Watson will go back to being an impact player.
