Nathan Brown discussion

I'd never heard of the guy last week and he has no track record at all - so only fools are giving him unqualified support - but no one is a sceptic, because we have zero information to base doubts on.
I doubt i'll even start to form an opinion on him till about halfway through next season.

My opinion so far is based on the fact that some of the best minds in rugby league who have dealt with him speak so highly. I've no doubt he will get some great structures in place tactically for us from the start. How he deals with personalities within the team, organisation and the media is pretty much untested when it is on him to do so. I really think Anthony Seibold is starting to struggle with some of those non football issues. That could be the test long term.

My optimism with the O'Brien option is that he spent so long at Storm as defensive coach, then swapped to Roosters as offensive coach and they won the premiership.

That tells me he has a very good footy brain and is good at both offense and defence. He is thought of very highly by Storm who gave him life membership, and Roosters. Neither club hires chumps. Excellence at all levels is their thing.

Sure, he hasn't coached a team himself but he had been up close and learning from two very good coaches for a long time.

Talk on here about signing some experienced coaches and that would have been my preference also, but none of them appear to be interested in the role.

I also believe those not excited by the idea will have changed their mind by end of 2020.

Multiple wooden spoons and struggling to find form with a minimum top 8 roster as Yazz said "the only way is up".

That's because he keeps getting baited into Bennett's mind games. And because Bennett has a selective memory in regards to the messes he's left behind at the Broncos and Knights. Amongst other things. As well as his own media sock puppets.

He only started at Roosters this year so actually lost last year. Also he is only doing attack at Roosters because there's no way the Roosters would move Fitzgibbon from his current defensive position. Having said that you can see some difference in the Roosters attack, especially in the last month or so. He's now letting Crichton play his natural game with offloads & the whole team is playing more second phase. This wasn't happening early in the year.

So according to Toohey the coaching team is likely to be O'Brien and David Furner.
Furner has all the experience that O'Brien lacks.
I don't know how the dynamics of it all will work, but all the ingredients for a good coaching team are there.
Furner with 300 firstgrade games in NRL and ESL, played for NSW and Australia, 140 games as a coach etc etc.

James Shepherd might be leaving as well. Interested to see who might replace him (Brennan maybe?). My biggest concern is we will have possibly an entire new coaching staff next year. We might be in that just-a-few-more-games-and-it-will-all-click territory next season early.

It concerns me a little that we will be the first team O'Brien has ever run as a head coach, but you couldn't find a better credentialed assistant coach than him, highly respected within the Storm & Roosters set ups. That's where the speculation of an old experienced head coming along like Furner or Sheens comes in.
