Nathan Brown discussion

None of them at all, all the current mentioned names are a step backwards imo.
I'd have Brown here still, said it enough times already.

I get that but reality comes knocking.

I'd like an experienced coach also who knows how to win games. But it doesnt look like the club is going that way.

Though nothing from the club yet on any candidates, just the media hype machine doing its thing so far.

Toohey said no to the club considering Wane from UK and I honestly dont know why the club wouldnt at least interview him and get his thoughts.

Wests so far have proven very astute operators so hopefully they will continue that with this decision also.

Wouldn't mind Des if he available, his record making finals ever year speaks for itself. Not sure about the mess ppl saying he leaves clubs in, im pretty sure manly sacked him during their golden run years,
Good run at the bulldogs(pretty sure it was doggies management that signed Woods and Foran for a mil each knowing the nrl had them for breaching salary cap)
Thing is we get Des somehow need to sign him for 4 maybe 5 years

When Des left Manly the team was forced to blow up after that GF because players like Watmough were on stupid backended deals of 900k and similar with Glenn Stewart which is why he was forced out kicking and screaming to Souths. Fortunately for them the other Stewart was crippled with injuries.

At the Bulldogs he signed a broken Foran and Foran only came because of Des and signed Mbye to a backended deal close to 1m in the last two years, as well as Lichaa.

Guy can coach to an extent but don’t let him near recruitment with a ten foot pole.

Obviously it's a risk to have a rookie coach, but I trust Wests know what they're doing. There seems to be a trend in the American NFL recently where teams are looking for rookie head coaches also (LA Rams, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and so on). Different systems and players to the NRL, sure, but it's a game which has evolved quite a bit recently, as has the NRL. I think they're going for coaches who have new ideas and methods, rather than coaches who have seen the game go past them. O'Brien would be coming from systems in the Storm and Roosters who have had longevity in success, meaning that they have stayed ahead of the constantly evolving game. He will be a risk, but he seems to have support in a lot of league personalities.

Also, further evidence that the Lurker has no idea/insight whatsoever:

"More Newcastle farewells to come

Nathan Brown's departure from Newcastle at season's end won't be the only farewell.

While assistant coach Kristian Woolf is tipped to link with St Helens, it's almost certain that fellow assistants Mick Potter and James Shepherd will also exit Newcastle.

Watch for Potter's name to emerge on the Dragons radar as an assistant to Paul McGregor."

Never mind that Potter is a development coach with the Eels lol.

It wouldn't surprize me if O'Brien brought Todd Lowrie back as an assistant coach.
He would have worked with Lowrie in Melbourne, and Lowrie worked with most of the young guys in our squad, and proved himself to be a very good coach with our NYC squad.
Lowrie has been working with some of the NSW rep sides this year, so he's still keen on coaching.
I'd love to see Wests convince Garth Brennan to be our other assistant coach.

Billy all of these assessments seems like a step forward.

Danny Weidler reporting that Trent Robinson has said that O'Brien wants the Knights job and supports him.

I notice O'Brien and Ben Cross both played their junior football at Batemans Bay Tigers, are about the same age I think, and were both at the Storm in 2007.
Since Browny sacked Ben he has been doing some coaching and training around Newcastle and is currently coach of the NSW women's side.
I think he coached Souths to the Newcastle premiership.

I'll be suprised of O'Brien isn't announced next week. Safe every one time Gardiner and get it done, will settle the boys for the next 3 weeks as well.

Seems at this point it's o'briens to lose. I also expect an announcement well before the end of the season to settle the team and provide some certainty.

So do i , but I bet we won't hear about it till after the finals race is well under way.

I think it was in the Newcastle Herald article this morning that Gardner said he wanted to announce the new coach at the Knights presentation night next month.

Jason Ryles and his agent have informed Knights officials he is staying to continue to serve as an assistant in Melbourne.

If it ends up being Adam O Brien it’s a good choice in theory.

It’s still a huge challenge for whoever it is and more so a rookie so I am hoping as others have mentioned Gardner surrounds him with good support staff and assistants.

I don’t know if I am more inclined to support a rookie coach because there is less information about him but there has never been a coaching signing that I have downright hated, some which turned out good or okay and some which did not turn out well.

Will be interesting to see the bargaining going on between both parties with certain KPIs but the thing going for the Knights and West’s is Gardner is on the same type of agreement as Brown and he is held accountable managing the CEO duties so whoever comes can’t complain about the guy who hired him.

Ben Cross is Seibold's assistant at the Broncos.
