2018 halves combination

It would be a real shame to lose Lamb. He’s a young promising half who could potentially develop into one of the better playmakers in the game. I’m a big fan of Lamb and think his ceiling is extremely high. Halves definitely carry more value than props no doubt, but to say we would be better off losing Daniel Saifiti is a big call. Daniel Saifiti is one of the best young forwards in the game. Right now, he’s a better prop than Lamb is a half – no question IMO. I’m not sure if you’re underrating Saifiti with that comment, or overrating Lamb. Regardless, I don’t think that’s a black and white proposition.

I think if Brown had the benefit of hindsight, knowing we were going to land Pearce, he wouldn’t have signed Watson knowing it would shaft Lamb. At the time of the Watson signing, we were struggling to sign players and the selling point for Watson to sign here was the opportunity to cement a starting spot in his preferred 6 jersey. At the time, that jersey was vacant for us, and it was necessary and smart sales pitch which ultimately landed him. You can’t just sit on your hands and not sign promising young players at a position of need in the hopes of signing a rep quality half down the track which may or may not come to fruition. The way it’s all played out, unfortunately Lamb is now left on the outside looking in. Pearce was a no brainer signing as he improves this team tenfold, and Brown can’t go back on his word to Watson this early in the piece. He needs to stay true to his word and give Watson a good crack at the 6 jersey, otherwise Watson will be unhappy and Brown’s word will mean nothing. In saying all of that, I don’t think the door is closed on Lamb, and I don’t for one second think Watson is cemented in the 6 jersey for the entire season before even a trial game has been played.

With the benefit of hindsight, I think this plays out much differently, but right now we have great depth and competition which is what you want. It may ultimately cost us Lamb, but let’s cross that bridge when we get to it. Besides, there was no way of knowing how this would unfold with Pearce becoming available and actually wanting to be here. That was a one in a hundred chance – at best.

My point is we have Cogger, which from what I've heard you say is a cracking prospect as well. Pearce is here to stay. Cogger isn't going to get a better opportunity else where if Lamb leaves.

Lamb probably won't either. Manly is the only team looking for a half, which they are probably going to sign Hodkinson instead of Lamb as they have they're own prospects already.

If Lamb leaves We still have 2 good options to partner pearce.
I'm really keen to see how Cogger goes this year. His spent all last preseason battling injury and eventually went for major surgery that meant he missed over half the season and struggled to get back to fitness, so this year he should be heaps better.
Having said that, I've always thought Lamb has a touch of genius about him that sets him apart from guys like Cogger, Stig, Roberts, and other prospects we've bred over the years.

We won't be keeping both of them for longer than a season so see what happens.

Very well said :applause:

I bet this keeps Nathan Brown up thinking all night. It sounds like he has liked the idea of having a running 5/8 when looking at what was available on the market at one stage (i.e. bird, watson). If we had landed cooper cronk early we may have very well seen a cronk/lamb halves pairing with a very different game plan/style for example.

Brown initially planned on having a Lamb/Watson combo and promised Watson first crack at 5/8 in that situation. However, things change with signings. If we were able to sign a top line 5/8 (i.e. Thurston, Milford) I'm sure brown wouldn't keep his promise to Watson about being starting 5/8. IMO all bets are off since Pearce has signed and brown is probably weighing up the pro's and con's of Lamb vs Watson at 5/8. Just because he was planning around having a running 5/8 i.e. bird, watson at the time doesn't rule out him changing his mind in terms of both his game plan and selections IMO and it may not only based on form as much as style of play/game plan.

Personally, I would go with:

6. Lamb
14. Watson

Spot on slots. Anyone who watched him at the chooks can see he can read the play well, and is lightning off the mark. An extra is his team work with and study of Pearce's play. Gives us a couple of months start compared to a new pairing.

I think he will, too.

We haven't seen a lot of him at 6 yet but the few games he played there last year he was outstanding as well as his performances in the 9s.

I Don't think Brown would have guaranteed Watson the starting 6 spot if he had known we were going to sign Pearce but its done now and if Lamb leaves then so be it ...I would rather he stay as I think he will be very very good but you cant keep them all and I want the club to do better so if he wants to go then let him .....but I have to say if it was between Lamb and Dan Saifiti going id let Lamb go because I don't know if Lamb will ever play for Australia but id put my house on Dan to play for the Kangaroo's .

Watson is a tackle breaking freak. Probably averages more than Gagai. And then to have him passing the ball to Ponga... Sheesh, we're gonna score some tries

In a vacuum, that’s ideal, but how would Watson be leaving his Roosters contract early only to be in the exact same position for Newcastle which he was unhappy with? He would be livid. A huge part of being a coach is man management and having the players respect you and buy into what you’re doing. You can’t promise the world to Watson to get him here, then go back on your word first chance you get. Watson absolutely needs to get first crack at five-eighth, or a starting spot at least, even if that’s hooker with Levi coming off the bench. That’s not to say he’s guaranteed a starting spot all year or is untouchable, but he needs to feel like he’s getting the first crack to cement a starting spot and not just pigeonholed into that utility role. You can’t just throw him on the bench and expect him to graciously cop it on the chin, otherwise what was the point of him bailing early on his Roosters contract to come here? Having a player happy and actually wanting to play for you is massive. You can’t sever that relationship before the season has even begun.

Mate give it up, Watson isn't a running five-eighth of real quality, our best chance is Lamb at fullback with Ponga as running 6.

100%. People are too obsessed with things having to be far right or far left. There needs to be a balance between fair selection based on form, game plan vs man management/team politics when it comes to picking the team. Leaning too far to one side will stuff the team dynamics up.

I think Watson will start at 6 as promised but I am sure it has been pointed out that now we have Pearce pushing Lamb out that he now has the added pressure to perform as Lamb as well as Cogger are waiting a chance.
Watson has the advantage of a promise and playing with Previous experience with Pearce.
Unfortunately Lambs best chance is injury as I expect Pearce/Watson to perform well.

Lamb's best chance is to show he is a better player during training and trials over the next few months.
Two years ago Brown had Mullo training at hooker to make way for rookie Lamb, because Lamb looked the goods at training.
Last year Lamb started the season rated ahead of the much more experienced Hodko, because Lamb looked the goods in training.
This year he has to look better than a kid who hasn't been able to nail down a halves position for the last 2 years at the Roosters and only has 10 starting games in the NRL as a 5/8.
Trent Robinson might not be much of a judge, and Watson might have slipped through his net I suppose, but I suspect that when the side starts doing ballwork, Lamb will be running his usual slick and faultless drills, and Watson will show he can run well.

You are selling Watson short here. He was a 20yo rookie. it was always going to be difficult for him to push a bigger name in Keary (who had a massive year) out of the 6.

Lamb will get his chance at some stage - just not Round 1

Give it up Billy.
This is getting ridiculous.

For the last 15 years or so I've seen literally hundreds of imports get hyped up by fans when we sign them, and maybe 1 in 10 live up to the hype.
I can see nothing in Watson's resume to suggest he is the next big thing, just waiting for his big break.
He just looks like a kid who hasn't been able to nail down a regular position yet.

I don’t know what everyone’s expectations for Watson are, but if it’s for him to be the “next big thing”, then your expectations are too high and you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. This signing doesn’t have to be all or nothing. There’s a middle ground there. Besides, he’s only 21. Let’s give him time to mature into a footballer first before we start labeling him this or that.
