does anyone else think if we get Watson we wont go after Cronk/Maloney? Be a bit hard on Lamb if he isnt in the 17 and cant see Watson signing to play bench or reserves?

I think we're going to get Watson but still try for Maloney or Cronk and if we get one it'll be as nice headache to have. In saying that I reckon we're highly unlikely to get Cronk or Maloney.....

I find it difficult to sit through an 80 minute knights game at the moment. At least with ponga, Watson, etc we would be looking at some more entertaining footy. Wish we could get a prop that gets through 150m every game.

I like the idea of skd coming too. We are overpaying so many players skd and Pete should be a good value center pairing. I think clubs will regret paying 800k for centres gagai, bird, Dugan, etc. I'd be much happier paying that sort of $ to a fullback or half.

If Cronk does stay on in a halves advisory role at the storm, you think that would stop Maloney etc moving.
Which means our play at Watson possibly just got more important.

Maloney wants out either way it seems. That or a pay rise. but id be happy with Lamb and Watson as long as we get some decent forwards

WATSON SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT

There’s a misconception among Newcastle fans that Connor Watson is another junior the club let slip.

That’s hardly the case.

Watson grew up on the Central Coast, playing league since the age of five, and signed a deal with the Knights at the age of 16.

But when he received a rugby scholarship from a prominent Sydney school, he chose to leave the SG Ball program to focus on his education.

“I signed a contract for SG ball at 16,” Watson told Private Ryan.

“When I got the scholarship to move to Knox (Grammar) I got released from the contract because I wasn’t going to be able to go to training at Newcastle.

“I was playing rugby union at Knox and if I was going to take the scholarship, the school didn’t want me playing rugby league.”

As fate had it Watson would sneak off campus to play league.

That’s how he wound up at the Roosters.

“Union was a very forward dominated sport,” Watson explained.

“I ran into (former Australian forward) Peter Tunks at a Harold Matthews trial and he had a chat to me after the game and said if I wanted to play league.

“I’d play union on Saturday and I went there and played with his side on Sunday.

“I’d tell the school I was going somewhere with my parents. Peter O’Sullivan from the Roosters came to one of our games and asked me to play SG ball for them.

“The school was really good with it as long as I didn’t miss any rugby games.”

DEMAND FOR BIG MAN

Brisbane are hopeful of re-signing forward Herman Ese’ese despite several clubs expressing interest in the 110 kilo prop.

It’s understood the Broncos have tabled him a contract while he recently toured Newcastle’s facilities after they’d expressed interest in bringing him to the hunter.

Melbourne are also believed to be keen on the big unit but with the salary cap unclear for 2018, Ese’ese is in no hurry to make a call on his future.

The 22-year-old’s name was also mention in Bondi Junction as a recruitment target earlier in the year although it’s understood the big man is out of their price range.

The Gold Coast also believe Ese’ese would be a good fit on the glitter strip but have baulked at his $300,000 a season price tag.

I'm very much in the minority but us signing Ponga, Guerra, possibly SKD, Moga, Watson and Ese'ese plus hopefully a few more props then that is a step in the right direction IMO. They aren't the flashiest players around but they bring everything we're lacking and need to the club.

I think they are all good all youth with some experience mixed in all a big upside, I know moga has had injury but he has been playing pretty well

I agree mate. I have watched Moga a few times now, he's not exactly a hi IQ footballer but I think he has a lot of upside. He's not a hog either, probably doesn't back himself enough.
