I think he's worth it and will improve our team greatly. Pongas 2 years off being anything but Bird will give us a straight up impact player.

I think we only get good value from about 1 in 10 "star" players we buy, so as a rule, I'm sceptical about buying our way to success.
Having said that, Bird ticks all the boxes - young, versatile, rep standard, if he signs he should be motivated to succeed, doesn't seem to be an idiot.
Much better than signing an old guy looking for one last payday at our expense.

Ya reckon?

Well one thing for sure. The NRL are trying to limit the cap next year to $8.3 million, whereas Clubs have been budgeting on various amounts between $9.3, $9.5 and $9.8 and some have allegedly committed to those amounts already. Interesting times ahead Clubs looking to raid the cookie jar and dump less sweet offerings.

Or some some put it utter turmoil!

Have the knights even bought 10 star players in their history?

Hagan, BK, Ben Cross, Darius, Beau Scott, Hodko are really the only current/recent rep players we've ever brought in?

Another BK would be nice.

Geez that's a bleak list for 25 years. Costigan played origin the season before he came here, but only as injury cover. You'd only say the first two on that list really contributed to rep player levels.

Oh, how bout Lee Jackson, he was a current GB rep.

I couldn't bring myself to refer to Jackson as a star player.

The Bennett boys were a waste of money, Hodko is terrible, Cross was OK when he wasn't injured (never), I can't remember how Hagan went.

BK is my second of third favourite player ever though.

Be a great combination Hodko and Bird.
I don't know why people think Hodko is a lock in for next year.
Lamb has 10 games of firstgrade, and his playmaking stats already put Hodko's to shame.
By kickoff next season Lamb should have another 20 games of firstgrade and another NRL off season, and hodko will have limped his way through another season and will train on an exercise bike in the off season again.
Lamb seems happy for Bird to come, and I suspect he already thinks getting over Hodko for a spot won't be that difficult.

Well the season before he came here he was on the bench for the Bulldogs, so maybe that's where he's headed again.

There's heaps of those old blokes that were brought in; Mark Sergeant, Tony Butterfield, Sam Stewart, Mark Glanville, John Schuster etc etc etc... In recent times the pickings have been pretty thin though.

Hagan wasn't exactly a star when he came to us.
He was third choice half at Canterbury behind Mortimer and Lamb. He was in and out of firstgrade and often played lock forward or fullback when he did get a game.
He did get a game for Qld in the days they plucked guys out of reserve grade, but he was a fringe player who came to us to get regular firstgrade games in the halves.

Stewart had already played for the Kiwis ... Schuster had played for the All Blacks ... don't think the other three had played any rep football before coming here though, apart from maybe City Country.
