Rumour: Knights looking at Maloney

Yea no doubt he's a gun. The best half the blues have had in 10 years imo. He IS the Sharks attack.

Look I'd prefer him at 5/8th than Bird. Anyday. But is he really gonna be better than Bird in 2 years? Perhaps. If we buy Maloney and not Bird are we going to regret that in 3 years? I'll be stoked with either. But sheesh I wouldn't want to be the bloke who makes the decision

Nearly won a comp with Warrior's in 2011

Won a comp with Roosters in 2013

Won a comp with Sharks in 2016

Won a comp with Knights in 2019

Add to that, none of those sides were very highly thought of before he joined them ... and the two he's left haven't had much success since he's gone, either.

Look there is no doubt bird is a great player but is he really a player to steer and build ur team around? Maybe.... maybe not.

Maloney on the other hand is a 100% yes u can build the team around him and he can and will steer them to the top.... proven twice in 3yrs

Maloney has previously stated he chooses which offer to take based on that clubs Premiership chances. At his age there arent plenty of tomorrows,he's on the downward side of his peak and it doesnt fit into the Knights philosophy. Bird on the other hand ....plenty of tomorrows and could be anything in the next couple of years, hasnt even reached his prime yet.

See i think I find this perspective more convincing than the opposing view

I also reckon Bird could be anything. He will be an origin mainstay for the next decade. Lets be real here, he managed to find his way into the centres for NSW in his second year of FG, despite the fact that he was a backrower in the juniors, and had spent most of his time in FG at either FB of 5/8th

This is as good a natural footballer as they come. Has played origin. Plays multiple positions. And he's 21 and not asking ridiculous money. This would be a huge coup

None of those sides were very highly thought of before he joined them ... and the two he's left haven't had much success since he's gone, either ( As James said ). The Sharks and warriors even easts chances weren't that good before he went there so I don't think that's right about him choosing clubs with a good chance of winning ...

I dunno, Bird seems pretty driven to me ... not many play origin and play well in it as well - in their second season. Plus he's had to overcome his arthritis which would have taken a lot of mettle.

The Maloney stuff about him saying he wants to win premierships is true ... so who knows if he'd be interested in coming here. Warriors he signed with to get into first grade ... and from memory there weirdly weren't many sides after him when he went to Cronulla?

Anyway, I think I'd be pretty over the moon if we signed either of them! I can't say I really have a strong preference one way or the other, both great players.

“As soon as I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stay at the Roosters, Cronulla were always my next choice,’’ Maloney said.

“I’ve always been able to look at a side and pick sides that I thought I could do well. I’ve had a pretty good run so far.

“It’s easy to go somewhere for money, but if you’re not winning footy games, it can get tired pretty quickly.

From Barry Toohey's column

BIG CARROT FOR BIRD

SO here is the thing with Jack Bird and Newcastle’s chances of enticing him away from Cronulla Sharks. Privately, the Knights are hopeful rather than confident.

The big carrot they have dangled in front of Bird, apart from a three-year deal that would make him easily the highest paid player at the club, is the chance to play five-eighth.

The problem for the Sharks is Bird doesn’t want to play in the centres long-term but with James Maloney and Valentine Holmes holding down the five-eighth and fullback spots, his options there are limited.

Bird was great at fullback last weekend but the Sharks won’t be paying Holmes $800,000 a season to use him as a winger long term.

Lock could be another position Bird may view as another way to get his hands on the football more.

But there have been whispers Paul Gallen may go around again and it could be some time before he makes a call on that.

Working heavily against the Knights is Cronulla’s success, his close friendship with Holmes and the fact the Sharks want to keep him and have plenty of room to move in the cap.

Stay tuned.

Eels enter race for Cronulla Sharks star Jack Bird with lucrative bid

JACK Bird will clash with Parramatta players on Saturday night — then sit down with Eels management as early as next week as the race for his signature heats up.

Cashed-up Parramatta see Bird as an ideal No. 6 along side Corey Norman, and more importantly have money in their cap to match the reported $2.7 million three-year deal tabled by Newcastle.

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan remained confident Bird would remain at the premiers, and pointed out Parramatta had only recently extended the deals of their own five-eighth Clint Gutherson and fullback Bevan French.

He also hoped the bond created by the Sharks’ historic first premiership would help Bird stay put.

“Quality players will always get offers, but I’m confident Jack will stay,’’ Flanagan told The Daily Telegraph.

“Plus, Parramatta’s No. 6 (Clint Gutherson) recently re-signed, and so did their fullback Bevan French, two positions Birdy likes to play.

“We want this squad to stay together, and winning a grand final creates a special bond between this group.

“As players have done in the past, like some of our leaders, including ‘Gal’ (Paul Gallen), they’ve stayed for less knowing what they had here.

“I am sure ‘JT’, Cam Smith, Cooper (Cronk), even guys like Joey Johns, they would have had better offers from other clubs, but mateship, team culture and attitude all mattered to them more.’’

The Eels have enough money in their salary cap — mainly from the cash saved by Kieran Foran’s unexpected early exit — and are in a rare position to pursue not one but two marquee players for next season.

It’s understood Bird’s camp wanted to wait until after Saturday night’s clash against the Eels before sitting down and discussing a potential move to the western suburbs.

Eels boss Bernie Gurr would not comment on recruitment. Nor would Bird’s camp.

One advantage for the Eels is the luxury to move French to five-eighth to accommodate Bird in the No. 1 jersey, while Gutherson, who had not played five-eighth until late last season, can play anywhere in the backline.

Big time slide I'd say. When those older players retire at years end or next year they will be a struggling club
Absolutely. Lewis, Gallen, Heighington all on the way out. I'm a massive fan of Wade Graham but he won't be able to keep that pack moving on his own. Jimmy Maloney is 31 this year as well (I am a massive Maloney fan it must be said, but if he goes down Cronulla are buggered).

There is a little fellow by the name of Andrew Fifita.. He gets a bit of a roll on.

How many times have we heard this over the last few years?

It comes from pretty solid info.

Same guy told me about the dogs chasing woods teddy moses brooks before anything came to the media.... then us looking at Maloney as well. Both things i posted on here about a week before any news was released.

Ooh Maloney....yes please...he's a great player.

Brown has no problem tapping guys on the shoulder and pointing them to the door.
He'll probably be able to find Hodko a nice house to rent in Huddersfield too.

Put it this way guys,

Im a fan of hodko and feel a bit sorry for the guy struggling to keep his own game going as well as ours.... so tbh his not working out for what this club needs.... blame Mullen as i do!!!

But atm we have roughly 2mil sitting in a bank... if we signed bird? Or Maloney? We could pay hodko out this yr and not be effected in 2018 at all.
