2014 NRL Discussion

That's as bad as I've seen the Roosters play (after the first 20 minutes) for a long time. No way they should have let the Sharkies back in to that game. Well done Cronulla.

Panthers steamroll Tigers 26-10

Penrith have reclaimed top position on the NRL ladder after a clinical 26-10 victory over the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The win did come at a cost however, with the new competition leaders finishing the game with just one player on the bench, losing captain Peter Wallace to an ankle injury and forwards Elijah Taylor and Adam Docker to concussion.

On an afternoon that was supposed to focus on the debut of exciting Wests Tigers teenager Mitchell Moses, the nephew of Tigers legend Ben Elias, it was his opposite number who put on an attacking masterclass.

Second-year fullback Matt Moylan was involved in four of Penrith's five tries – scoring the first of the match before setting up three more. He also threw the second-last pass for his side's fifth.

Moses passed his first test – a towering Jamie Soward bomb in the opening minutes. But sadly, it was one of the few things for Tigers fans to cheer all afternoon.

There were certainly glimpses of the Moses-Brooks combination, but the home side struggled to maintain pressure on a Panthers unit that never looked like panicking in their own half – even when Moylan grassed a pass in his own in-goal.

And they had very good reason to be confident.

On the very same play that they lost skipper Wallace for the game to a high ankle sprain, Moylan stepped two arm-grabbing defenders in the 16th minute for the opening points of the match.

Six minutes later they were in again through acting dummy-half Tyrone Peachey, but the in-form back-rower was pulled up for an obstruction in the play-the-ball.

The setback failed to deter the visitors however, as a failed attempt to tackle kicker Jamie Soward resulted in a soft, 53rd-minute Dean Whare four-pointer on the second tackle of the ensuing set.

The Tigers thought they had reduced the lead just before the halftime break when Luke Brooks' inside pass put centre Chris Lawrence into space, but the veteran was ruled to have lost the ball in the put-down.

A halftime recalibration from coach Mick Potter should've seen the home side in good stead, but a backchat from skipper Braith Anasta – and then a penalty for a lifting tackle on Jamal Idris – ended in Moylan setting up right winger Kevin Naiqama in the corner in the 49th minute.

The home side hit back four minutes later courtesy of Blake Austin's left-foot step, but any thought of an unlikely comeback was put to bed when the Panthers kept the ball alive just long enough for Idris's first try as a Panther.

Penrith sealed the win in the 63rd minute after yet another right-side shift and Moylan assist, completing Whare's brace of tries.

The Tigers bagged a late consolation try to Luke Brooks in the 77th minute.

Anasta, who was put on report for the lifting tackle on Idris, came off midway through the second half with a partially torn bicep and went immediately for scans.

Wallace's season under grey injury cloud

By Matt Encarnacion, Western Sydney Correspondent

6:00pm Sun 06th July, 2014

Penrith could be without halfback and skipper Peter Wallace for the remainder of the season after he suffered a high ankle sprain in his side's 24-10 victory against the Wests Tigers on Sunday.

Wallace was hurt in a collision one play prior to teammate Matt Moylan crossing for the opening try of the match, and was treated on the sideline before valiantly attempting to play on.

But the former NSW halfback lasted just one more play before exiting the field after the first tackle of the restart. He did not return.

The official diagnosis post-game was a syndesmosis injury, which could rule him out for 6-12 weeks.

"We'll have to cross our fingers and hope for the best there but it looks like he's gone for a few weeks... I don't think it's too good," coach Ivan Cleary said post-game.

With five-eighth Jamie Soward moving to first receiver and ball-playing back-rower Tyrone Peachey coming on as makeshift pivot, the Panthers overcame the loss of their primary orchestrator to score five tries to two and reclaim top spot on the NRL ladder.

"Obviously losing [Wallace] early in the game, that really threw us out," Cleary said.

"But I've got to say, I thought the boys really handled that. At times we looked disjointed but that's probably normal.

"But we were just able to hold them off for long enough. In the end, to get the two points, it's a good day's work."

Fullback Matt Moylan certainly stepped up in Wallace's absence, scoring one try and setting up three more. He was also involved in the fifth and final try to centre Jamal Idris.

"He's been a big part of what we've done this year in every game," Cleary said.

"With Sowie missing the second half last week, we had a bit of a lead-in so that was one good thing to come out of last week. We were half ready for that, for Tyrone to be able to step into that five-eighth role and Sowie taking over halfback.

"Certainly Matty's a big part of our spine there and he's getting better at it. And he's going to be need to be."

There was a minor scare early on for the second-year fullback, who grassed a pass in his in-goal, similar to one that resulted in a game-sealing try for the Warriors last week.

"He spoke to me about it last week, but that was a bit of a brain snap again. Lucky Kevvy cleaned it up," Moylan said.

"I was just trying to get the ball out of the in-goals.

"Didn't want to die with the ball in the in-goal but probably should've.

"He didn't bring it up [at half-time]. We'll probably have a chat about it this week I'd say."

Cleary reserved special praise for evergreen prop Brent Kite, who celebrated his 300-game milestone with a win.

"Not just the 300 games, but I don't know what his winning percentage is, but it'd be pretty high," Cleary said.

"[He's] done everything in the game [and] I still like it when he's out there for us, you know? Makes me feel better. Not just the way he plays, but the influence he has on others. He's a winner. So he's good to have."

Penrith forwards Elijah Taylor and Adam Docker also failed to finish the game with concussion, but Cleary said neither were of major concern.

Harrison to be honoured by Titans

By Tony Webeck, Chief Queensland Correspondent

12:00pm Mon 07th July, 2014

The Gold Coast Titans will honour one of the club's most loyal servants in Ashley Harrison when they play the Bulldogs in Round 26 but it's not the send-off the 15-season veteran deserves.

That's the view of Titans teammate Dave Taylor who recently attributed his good form in 2014 that has earned a Maroons Origin recall to the influence of senior players such as Harrison and Nate Myles.

Having announced his intention to retire at season's end following Gold Coast's Round 5 win over the Storm in Melbourne, Harrison suffered a fracture to the C6 vertebrae in his neck in Round 9 against the Rabbitohs.

The fracture healed sufficiently for Harrison to take the field against the Storm in Round 14 but after suffering a 'burner' in his left shoulder that forced him from the field and receiving further medical advice that he risked permanent nerve damage by continuing to play.

Harrison called time on a career that boasted 276 first grade games and 15 Origin matches for Queensland.

The exact nature of the tribute to Harrison is still to be determined but with a Sunday 3pm kick-off against the Bulldogs to wrap up the regular season on September 7 club officials will be hoping for a big turnout to farewell one of their favourite sons.

"It's just awful for a legend like that to go out that way; you'd have liked to have seen him finish a game and walked a lap with his kids," Taylor told NRL.com.

"I haven't given him a ring or sent him a text yet and I haven't seen him since but I've been wanting to congratulate him.

"He's been one of the toughest players in the NRL and it's just very sad to see him end his career like that.

"You'd love to give him the rest of the year to go out the true legend that he is."

Titans upset Souths in scrap-fest

By Chris Kennedy, National Correspondent

9:10pm Mon 07th July, 2014

In a match where there were more errors and penalties than points, an understrength Titans outfit managed to upset South Sydney 14-10 in front of 10,925 people on Monday night.

In all there were 25 penalties with Souths getting a 14-11 advantage and 25 errors, with the Rabbitohs committing 17 to Gold Coast's eight, compared to 24 points scored by both teams combined.

The Titans never led until a 67th-minute try to Kevin Gordon, which proved to be the last points of the game, but Souths will rue the avalanche of ball they coughed up throughout the contest.

Both sides had to deal with their share of injuries as well, with George Burgess – in his return from an ankle injury – leaving the field just after half time after a recurrence of the problem.

Kyle Turner also spent time off the field with an ankle issue and Adam Reynolds spent most of the second half hobbling after having his leg twisted awkwardly in a tackle late in the first half.

For the visitors, David Mead finished the game at fullback after captain and try-scorer William Zillman was concussed.

Mead however proved an asset with some great late defensive plays saving his side from a late loss.

A scrappy first half punctuated by half a dozen errors from each side and just as many penalties conceded by each team saw Souths head to the break up 8-4 despite each side scoring one try.

The recalled Lote Tuqiri looked a man on a mission with an early line break from a kick return as he looked to prove a point after having spent a fair bit of time in NSW Cup this season but it was another recalled man who made the early running.

Luke Keary was playing his first NRL game of 2014 after rupturing a pectoral muscle in the pre-season Auckland Nines tournament and his seventh-minute bomb came down to fullback Nathan Merrit, who offloaded back infield.

The loose ball scooted past several players before Keary, backing up, picked it up on the burst and with no-one in front of him raced 15 metres to the try-line.

One of the home side's many first half errors almost led to an equaliser to Titans lock Paul Carter, hitting a Mortimer short ball at pace, but he was held up.

A series of errors against Souths handed the Titans further opportunities but they looked to lack cohesion and it was a penalty against the Titans that led to the next points when Reynolds took two points just before the half hour mark.

Souths continued to hand the visitors chances and a Dylan Walker drop early in the set followed by a penalty gave the Titans a full set at the Rabbitohs' line.

With Albert Kelly fresh on the field after being named on the interchange bench in his comeback from a calf injury, the Kelly-Mortimer halves combinations paid dividends inside their first five minutes when Mortimer fed it to Kelly whose switch back inside saw winger David Mead burst over almost untouched out wide.

Mortimer's kick faded left and despite some last-play razzle-dazzle from the home side after the half time siren that almost saw Kyle Turner score, the score-line remained 8-4 at the break.

The errors and penalties continued after the break and it was a quick brace in the visitors' favour that put them in position for a jagged Zillman run to wrong-foot Dylan Walker to get his side level at 8-all after 47 minutes.

After some missed opportunities to both sides a quick run of three penalties in three minutes against the Titans – who were forced to defend five sets in a row – almost saw Sutton score but he was ruled to have been held up.

Despite all the defending they'd just done the Titans marched downfield and when Alex Johnston spilled a bomb, some quick hands form the Titans saw Gordon cross in the corner and convert his own try from touch to earn the 14-10 advantage they'd cling on to frantically until full time.

Gold Coast Titans - 14 (David Mead, William Zillman, Kevin Gordon tries; Kevin Gordon 1/1, Daniel Mortimer 0/2)

Defeated

South Sydney Rabbitohs - 10 (Luke Keary try; Adam Reynolds 3/3 goals)

Manly coach Geoff Toovey says he’s “hopeful” Taufua will play. Young gun Clint Gutherson is on standby.

Daly Cherry-Evans got through Origin and is expected to play, despite an ongoing knee injury.

Origin stars Robbie Farah and Aaron Woods have been passed fit by the club medical team and will play, with the Tigers to be 1-17.

Braith Anasta (bicep) is likely to miss the rest of the season, while Liam Fulton (concussion) announced his immediate retirement on Thursday.

The Storm expect all five Origin players to back up, despite slight concerns over Cameron Smith (ankle) and Will Chambers (concussion).

Cooper Cronk will be a late inclusion despite not being named after surviving his return from a broken arm on Wednesday night.

He replaces Ben Roberts in the halves.Josh Reynolds (suspension, round 21) is out, with the Bulldogs yet to name a replacement.

However, Moses Mbye (foot) is not in contention for the spot, with the young gun only an outside chance for next week.

Trent Hodkinson pulled up well and is expected to back up, although Josh Morris (knee) was limping after Origin and is in doubt.

Sunday, Jul 13, Titans v Raiders, Robina Stadium, FOX, 2:00pm

Nate Myles is expected to back up. He took the early guilty plea to a dangerous contact charge, but won’t miss any games.

However, Greg Bird (suspension, round 20) will miss two games for a dangerous throw. David Mead (hamstring) is out, replaced on the wing by Anthony Don.

Matt Srama (groin) is also out of contention.

The Raiders have no injury concerns but have been forced into a change, with young gun Jeremy Hawkins out due to a second tier salary cap issue.

Coach Ricky Stuart is yet to decide between Matt Allwood and Reece Robinson as Hawkins’ replacement.

Monday, Jul 14, Panthers v Broncos, Sportingbet Stadium, FOX, 7:00pm

Adam Docker, Elijah Taylor (both concussion) and Kevin Naiqama (ankle) picked up injuries in Penrith’s last match, but are progressing well and expected to play.

Andrew McCullough (knee) has been cleared to return.

Clinton Gutherson seems to have a bright future. Bit shaky in defence but with experience he'll learn from the best. Already set up a try and has made several breaks.

Agreed. Sets high expectations for himself and seems to enjoy his footy more than anyone. He's only played like 3 first grade games and I'm already seeing him as a star, even if he dons the dreaded Manly jumper.
