Bennett pros and cons

It's pretty clear people expected Bennett to deliver a premiership and because he hasn't done so, they're quick to criticize and undermine even the success of last year's finals run, which was far from a fluke. The depressing exaggeration from so many fans here and elsewhere is quite honestly sad to see, I would expect better from Newcastle fans.

No club has suffered the issues we have had this season except for the Sharks, and look where they are. They're issues that would derail even the best of teams and the injuries, while no different to many, have just made things worse. Problem is even if we manage to pull ourselves to 10th or 9th, just missing the finals people are going to forget the ownership debacle, the payment issues and the player digression and say it was "accurate" and continue to bash Bennett's run at Newcastle. Way too many fans fail to see the off field issues as legitimate reasons as to why the team has failed on field in 2014. It seems there should be on field success regardless of what is going on off field.

It's disgusting to see so many people become so blind to this team's capabilities, seemingly just happy to fall in line with the other nuffies eating up the garbage that gets tossed about. Edit: Really, the best way to put it is that last September the negativity wasn't here. Those criticizing the team and giving them zero credit was doing the exact opposite and would have probably kissed the ground Bennett walked on.

When Bennett signed on for the coaching job of our beloved rugby league team, I wasn't expecting instant success or an instant premiership, I was expecting improvement in all areas of our game and consistency with a team that competes every week, that's what got me excited. To think we cold be a team that would be able to compete like Manly or the Storm could, even with troops down, but still dig in and give 100% to win.

I do not see myself as 'bashing' Bennett, he has my full support behind him, but there has to be a point where you ask yourself where has he taken us and where we have improved on since his arrival? Please do tell me, without mentioning our semi finals as of last year or any of the off field issue this year, where have we improved on apart from the team on paper and our juniors? Our attack is so flat (although it has been okay within recent week) with one out runs and not much else, yes lets blame off field issues for that. I can understand defense, but seriously, one out runs in attack is inexcusable. Heck, I even hope he stays on board for a few more season, if he takes us to a grandfinal, I will gladly kiss the ground he walks on (saying that in praise, not as a bet of some sort). I did believe this was the year we would should some promise but sadly due to the season we've had, I don't think we will. Just gotta wait until next season.

By fluke, I mean half way through the season we looked nothing like a top 4 team, most of us weren't even sure we we're going to make the top 8, didn't we have to win 8 from 10 or 11 at one stage in the season to make the 8, then we barley scapped in because I think the Titans or Warriors didn't win their round 26 game (please @rhugh89 tell me if I'm not talking out of my asss here, because I'm not 100% sure  ) then we put in 2 incredible matches against both the Bulldogs and the Storm, no doubt they were some of the best games I've seen us play. Not taking away from that and from the incredible run we had, but my point being, at one stage of the season, we didn't look anything like a Bennett coached team and weren't even sure if we were to make the 8 or not. On paper we look like a top 4 team, the way we played that first half of that season, no way even a top 8 team. Which plays to my point, where was the consistency?

I do agree that this year has been f-ing horrible season, and could and probably is playing a major factor on why were doing so badly THIS year. But once again, I ask where have we improved on? Where have I/we been blind on the teams capabilities? We all know what this team is capable of, but sadly we haven't executed it as of yet.

Yes, lets put down others simply because they have other views different to yourself.

@Defender1, you have to say why you disagree mate

We had a shocking run in the middle of the season where we won just 2 games out of 8 (Between Rounds 7 and 14)

In Round 15 we had the bye but still needed to win 6 out of our last 10 games after that to be assured of finals footy

Our run from Round 16 to Round 26 went - WWBWLDWLLWW

We made the 8 by finishing with 29 points but if we had lost to the Eels in Round 26 and the Titans beat the Storm we would've missed the finals (The Storm won that game 23-22)

Here is the table from last year, We just scraped it thanks to our come from behind draw with the Broncos in Round 21 and the fact we had Parramatta in the last round on old boys day at Hunter Stadium :)

Unfortunately, the story seems to be the same as recent years, we play like crap for most of the year & then just when you think we're gone we make a run.

2010 - nothing special for most of the season, Gidley moves to halfback & we win a few games to finish off & gain some respect.
2011 - steady season, only just scraping into the finals with some good games to finish off.
2012 - very average season, we came back after the bye against the Tigers & smashed them, starting a run of better form & giving us fans hope we might be a force in 2013.
2013 - average for most of the year, some good games here & there & then the finals run happened which was an amazing time.
2014 - horrible season, a couple of wins have given us hope we might finish the season off strong but no guarantees.

2011 we only spent a couple of weeks out of the top eight all year and did have a shot at the top four until fairly late in the season.

I didn't see a miraculous premiership coming from Bennett, I just hoped for improvement. Two finals wins in three years doesn't really cut it.

I mean Canberra have a run like that every few seasons, didn't mean Furner kept his job, coz they were crap the rest of the time.
