Knights go down to Sharks in thrilling opener

We knew the NRL Auckland Nines would be frenetic and fast-paced, but the Newcastle Knights opening game against Cronulla was something else.

That’s the general consensus after the Knights’ opening match of the inaugural tournament versus the Sharks.

In a highly entertaining match, Newcastle went down to Cronulla 15-12 via a try to winger Nathan Gardner with just 60 seconds remaining.

Newcastle can take plenty of positives out of the match though, with five-eighth Jarrod Mullen, halfback Tyrone Roberts and NYC graduate Jake Mamo all impressing.

The Knights will now rest up, before taking on the Gold Coast Titans in their second match at 2.45pm (AEST).

With the Titans easily accounting for the Tigers in their first match, 22-7, it's set to be a crucial game for the Club if they are to progress through to the quarter final stages of the tournament.

Newcastle started the match full of running, spreading the ball wide at every opportunity in the opening exchanges.

Emerging winger Mamo and centre Dane Gagai looked dangerous with the ball in hand, but couldn’t covert their early chances.

This changed in the fourth minute when halfback Tyrone Roberts swooped on a lose pass from the Sharks to run 60 metres and score.

Mullen converted from the sideline to give the Knights an early 6-0 advantage.

Cronulla hit back just two minutes later via a barnstorming Sam Tagataese, who barged over under the posts for a five-point try.

Holdsworth added the extras for the Sharks to lead 7-6 at the halftime break.

Cronulla extended their lead just two minutes into the second half, with five-eighth Todd Carney proving too elusive.

Holdsworth missed the kick, but the Sharks jumped out to an 11-6 lead.

The Knights remained composed and surged back into the lead just two minutes later via some magnificent work from Mullen.

Firstly the five-eighth made a strong 40 metre run, before laying on a pinpoint kick for centre Joseph Leilua to score out wide.

Mullen converted another goal from the sideline to give his side a slender 12-11 advantage.

The Knights looked to be in a winning position with only minutes remaining, but had their hearts broken in the dying stages.

Sharks winger Nathan Gardner finishing off a back line move to score in the corner with just seconds remaining to give his side the win.

Knights defeat Titans in second round

Inspired by a hat-trick to centre Joseph Leilua, the Newcastle Knights kept their Auckland Nines campaign alive with an impressive 25-14 win over the Titans on Saturday afternoon.

On the back of some brilliant finishing work by speedsters in Leilua, Aku Uate, Dane Gagai and Jake Mamo, the men in red and blue charged to a comfortable victory in front of a packed crowd at Eden Park.

Newcastle now joins the Sharks, Tigers and Titans all on one win each, in a congested Blue Pool many experts rate as the most competitive in the tournament.

The Knights will now have to win their final match against the Tigers tomorrow (10.25am AEST), while also waiting on other results to see if they advance through to Sunday's quarter-finals.

In the lead-up to the game, captain Jarrod Mullen wanted his side to focus more on retaining possession.

Well that’s exactly what the Knights did, using their big forwards to make metres before spreading the ball wide.

This didn’t stop the Titans from opening the scoring after just two minutes via former Knight Brad Tighe.

Tighe swooped on a kick Newcastle let bounce to score under the posts and give Gold Coast an early 7-0 advantage.

At this stage the Titans were on top, but the Knights hit back five minutes late thanks to a Jeremy Smith five-point try.

Smith took a perfectly timed inside ball from forward Zane Tetevano to stroll across the line.

Mullen added the extras to lock the scores 7-all.

The Titans were caught napping on the re-start of play, with Mullen’s kick-off going dead to earn the Knights a repeat set.

Emerging hooker Adam Clydsdale looked to have barged over from close range in the following set, but his hard-running effort was ruled no try thanks to a double movement.

Newcastle still retained possession though, allowing Uate to jump out of dummy half and set up Leilua for his first try of the game.

Mullen converted the drop-kick to give Newcastle a 11-7 lead at the break.

The second half started woefully for the Titans, with David Mead kicking out on the full.

This enabled the Knights to open the scoring in the second stanza via Leilua, who capitalised on a surging run by Gagai to grab his second.

Mullen added the extras to give his side a 17-7 advantage.

The Knights were well and truly on top and Leilua made sure of this with his third try just minutes later to extend the lead out to 21-7

Gold Coast flyer Tighe grabbed his second try to keep his side in the match at 21-14, but this sniff was soon extinguished thanks to a Mamo try.

The NYC graduate brushed off three defenders to run 15 metres, score and seal a vital win for the Knights.

Knights' find winning formula

The Newcastle Knights started today not knowing too much about the Auckland Nines concept, but by the completion of day one the side believes they now understand how to succeed in the inaugural tournament.

And the answer is simple - hold the ball and starve your opposition of possession.

That's certainly the opinion of forward Jeremy Smith, who says completions and patience was the key to the Club's impressive 25-14 victory over the Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon.

Smith, who scored a strong try against the Titans, has called for his side to continue their focus on ball control when they take on the Tigers in a must-win match tomorrow morning at 10.25am AEST.

Newcastle finished the opening day on top of the Blue Pool on for-and-against, but must still beat the Tigers to advance through to the quarter-final stage.

"I think we completed pretty well against the Gold Coast, so holding the ball in this heat certainly pays off," Smith says.

"There wasn’t too much said after the Sharks loss, because we knew we just had to keep possession.

"So we went out there, completed and now I’m looking forward to tomorrow against the Tigers.

"Everyone is sort of finding a bit of structure and working out the game, so it has all fallen into place.

"We’ve just got to turn up on Sunday and work hard again, because the longer you keep the ball the harder it is for the defence to hold on."

The win over the Titans in front of a packed crowd at Eden Park was also a great opportunity for Smith to perform in front of his family.

As a proud New Zealander born-and-raised in Christchurch, the forward loved nothing more than crossing for a try on home turf.

"I’ve got a bit of family around, I think they are in the grandstand somewhere," he says.

"It was good to get a win and to score a try I’m happy.

"So everyone is a winner."

Smith and the Knights are hoping that's the case against the Tigers on Sunday morning.

At least Stuart had good years in 02, 03, 04 and 08 and heck Matt Elliot was one of the best super league coaches with a great record with Bradford and was pretty decent under the Raiders. But, Price on the other hand has done nothing.
 
I thought we were unlucky to lose the first game after the way we fought back to regain the lead. Some shocking errors with Mason's offload to the Sharks player, Beau Scott's sideline pass on the first etc. But I thought we were still pretty good, Mullen and Leilua are right in their elements. The second game was much better, I thought we controlled the Titans really well, they got the fluke bounce of the ball but we piled on the points in return and were looking the goods. I just think we need to tighten our defence up a bit more against the Tigers and keep doing what we're doing, I think we've looked more structured and confident than most teams playing today. We can make the finals if we beat the Tigers so hopefully that spurs them on even more and they keep getting better. How good is Mamo and I don't get why Uate has got bagged lol? He's been one of our best I thought without being spectacular.
 
Elliott's NRL record is no where near that good, that number would have to include super league. I thought the Warriors were off their head when they signed him hahah as for Stuart, that number is mainly due to his early years, and to be honest he had a legendary team at his disposal headlined by Fittler, and if anything, disappointed winning only one grand final. Since then he has been abysmal bar one good year at the Sharks. Since mid 2009, he has won 10 matches out of 51. Definitely has to be the most overrated coach of the modern era, the Raiders somehow must think differently but to pay him what they are paying.

TWO years in the making, the NRL Auckland Nines dream finally became a reality yesterday when 46,000 fans danced and partied to rugby league’s new groove.

Not since Tina Turner in the mid-80s has rugby league boasted a greater advertisement for the game.Eden Park was the location for rugby league’s version of the Formula One yesterday.

Fast-paced, manic and at-times out of control.

That’s what happens when you invite 16 teams and 256 players to strut their stuff, under revised NRL rules, no video referee, all in front of a rocking and rolling stadium.

If it wasn’t the skill and athleticism of the game’s next hottest talent, including New Zealand’s Shaun Johnson, Parramatta winger Semi Radrada and Wests Tigers fullback James Tedesco, it was old legends like Roosters legend Brad Fittler and Manly champion Steve Menzies, who kept the crowd on their feet.

Fittler, who in his first match since retiring in 2004 scored a runaway intercept try, was in awe of the reception he received, a standing ovation after he had raced 55 metres.

“I’m going to have to watch it on reply to see how slow it was. It was awful,’’ Fittler joked.

“No one was chasing me, they must have thought someone else took it.

“There’s nothing like being in space.“But truly, how good is this? The atmosphere is like nothing else.’’

Short-priced favourites leading into the Nines, the New Zealand Warriors remain the popular pick after the ‘home’ side moved through to Sunday unbeaten.

Their mobile forwards were devastating as Johnson and England International and fullback Sam Tomkins produced footwork more suited to the popular bars and clubs of Auckland.

“We’ve got a lot of big blokes with feet like wingers, which is good’’ Tomkins said.

“When you look across at the big fellas and the footwork that they’ve got, there’s stuff there that you can’t really teach.

“We’re desperate to play well for these fans, they’ve paid their hard earn money so we’re looking to repay them a little bit.’’

While the powerful Warriors set the benchmark, it was the performance of the Parramatta Eels, that shocked most.

Wooden-spooners the past two years, the Eels thrived under the Nines format with live wire halfback Chris Sandow running amok.

Coach Brad Arthur also knows he has a huge weapon at his disposal after Radrada announced himself with four tries.

Even NRL chief executive Dave Smith declared Parramatta’s first match win over the Roosters as his personal favourite from the action-charged day.

“The on-field highlight for me was probably watching the Eels beat the Roosters, wooden spooners beat the premiers. It was fantastic,’’ Smith said.

The losers yesterday were the Bulldogs and Canberra with both teams failing to win a match.

Ironically, they are the only two sides that their respective coaches, Des Hasler and Ricky Stuart, failed to make the trip to Auckland.

In reality, both sides will play today with one thing on their coaches minds, escaping injury.

Several sides weren’t so lucky yesterday with real concerns ahead of the NRL kick off set for March 7 for Wests Tigers young gun Curtis Sironen (foot), North Queensland’s Lachlan Coote (knee)

But according to Smith, not even the unfortunate of injury could take away from a day that overwhelmingly was declared a success.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt an atmosphere like this,’’ Smith said.

“There’s been a great atmosphere.

"The players have been fantastic, the crowd has enjoyed it and its been a great spectacle.

“The product has worked really well.

“There’s lots of things we can do with it, we need to get through another day, but fundamentally its about growth.

"Its about 25,000 people here today from outside of Auckland, 8000 from Australia, we’ve sparked an interest, we’ve captured the imagination.’’

Nines injury report: Cowboys recruit Lachlan Coote suffers suspected ACL tear

LACHLAN Coote’s season appears to be over after just seven minutes of Nines football, with the new Cowboys recruit the unluckiest victim of an injury curse on the tournament’s opening day.

North Queensland coach Paul Green expected MRI scans to confirm the ex-Panthers fullback had suffered a dreaded ACL tear, putting him at the top of a casualty ward that also includes Curtis Sironen (foot), Todd Carney (hamstring), Dave Taylor (ankle) and Isaac Liu (knee).

In another blow for the Tigers after last weekend’s ankle injury to Dene Halatau, Sironen is likely to be sidelined for six weeks with a fractured foot he sustained in the opening stages of his team’s second pool match against Cronulla.

Teammate and close friend James Tedesco revealed the versatile playmaker injured his toe at training last week, and needed painkillers to take the field.

“I think he hurt it in the first game (against Gold Coast),” Tedesco said.

“He sort of took it over with him.

"He did it at training a few days before, he had to needle it.

“The first run he didn’t feel too comfortable. I just don’t think he wanted to risk it.”

The same match also claimed Carney, who tweaked his hamstring and will take no part in Sunday’s action.

Coote’s campaign was just seven minutes old when he hobbled off in North Queensland’s opening clash against the Sea Eagles.

He was grounded after a 40-metre dash, and taken straight for scans at a nearby clinic in Auckland.

Should they reveal the worst, Coote will be forced to stomach the fourth serious injury of his relatively short career.

He suffered a shoulder injury in 2009, osteitis pubis in 2010 and missed most of last year with a torn pectoral.

“It’s pretty big, it’s massive,” Green lamented as Coote left the ground for scans.

“He’s one of our key signings.

"For him personally, he tore his (pectoral muscle) last year and if this is a season-ending injury, it’s tragic.”

Coote was recruited to Townsville to replace club great Matt Bowen at fullback.

The prognosis on Taylor was not as grim.

The Titans hulk failed to finish his opening game against the Tigers after twice taking knocks to his right knee, but tests showed the damage was not structural.

“I copped a cork on the teardrop and it was a bit tender,” Taylor said.

“It was quite sore.

"I will have a look at it and find out what’s wrong.”

Titans assistant coach Neil Henry hopes overnight treatment will enable Taylor to play on Sunday.

“He is improving but we will have to make a call on him in the morning,” he said.

“We’ll see how he pulls up overnight, he’s had ice on it and been stretching so we’ll see how he goes.”

Someone mentioned on here when Lachlan first signed with the Cows that they better watch out due to Coote being injury prone. Turns out they were right on the money haha.
