Round 17: Knights v Bulldogs @ Mackay Stadium

Thanks heaps @rhugh89 for those stats

Gagai is getting unfairly criticized imo. He might not be making line breaks and scoring tries every game like he was last year but you can't question his effort. He's still breaking a million tackles, trying to get around the defence and taking ALOT of huge hit ups that have been helping to set up tries. All the attack is going down the left side and it's making the right side look lazy and no good. It's been the exact opposite for years and it's no wonder there were calls for McManus to not be re-signed but now he's getting all the ball Uate and Gagai used to get, he's getting praised and the right side are getting booed even though they're not doing anything wrong really. Personally I think it's good that we're surprising so many teams with our left side, it's obviously working so why stop?

A quote from the press conference that gave me a good laugh:

8 all at half time, what was the message to the boys in the sheds?

Wayne: Walk home if you don't win.

Good ol Wayne

Haha that's awesome

Why are some people still criticizing Gower, yeah he might be a tad off the pace after 5 & a half years out of the NRL but i'd rather have him there than Waddell. I only saw him do 2 wrong things really, miss Inu one on one who is a much bigger man than himself & kick dead just, but atleast he's a extra kicking option who actually knows what he's doing. Roberts has lifted so much too, today Roberts played his best ever game in the NRL, hopefully this is the start of him controlling games along with Mullen.

Anyone who blames the Inu try entirely on Gower is loco! Everyone stayed on the right side and let Inu spin to the left, should've had him covered alot quicker.

After watching the game today, I saw that Uate's kick returns looked alot more damaging. Almost broke the line on one occasion and I hope he starts getting some form in the next few weeks.

Newcastle Knights beat Canterbury Bulldogs 18-12 in NRL round 17 thriller

WE keep hearing it's a young man's game.

Don't believe it for a minute.Willie Mason is 33. But he turned the clock back a decade against his old club in Mackay.Back to the days when he used to put the wind up rival sides with intimidation his weapon of choice.

If he wasn't charging at the Dogs' line and attracting three and four defenders at a time, he was picking his own mark in defence. He rattled James Graham with a textbook shot midway through the first half that must surely have loosened a filling or two.Sure, he had a mistake or two in his game. Like his knock-on in the opening tackle of the match from the kick-off.But he more than made up for the negatives.

Then there was his hooker.Danny Buderus is 35. He's had two back operations this season just to get on the field.
The bones might creak a little more and he might not quite have the zip he used to out of dummy half but he hasn't lost the smarts.

NRL siren slip-up no drama for Bennett

By Ed Jackson
AAP
Sun 07th July, 10:12pm

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett says he wasn't concerned after officials didn't hear the full-time siren as his side desperately defended their NRL lead over Canterbury.

The Knights were forced to make two tackles close to their tryline after time appeared to be up in their 18-12 win at Mackay Stadium on Sunday.

Bennett said the incident would've created controversy if the Bulldogs had managed to score a potentially match-winning try.

But the seven-time premiership winning coach believes his team's victory was never really in doubt.

"They'd have to award the game to the Knights or the team that was ahead at the end of the game," Bennett matter-of-factly said after the game."You can't win a game when you're out of time."I wasn't particularly beating myself up about it."

I don't get some people honestly, we win back to back and still there are complaints about players.

The guys managed to grind out a win which we haven't been able todo previously, lets enjoy it.

Just because we won doesnt mean it was a faultless performance and doesnt mean that on a forum to discuss the knights that we cant critique players performances

Did anyone notice after the full time siren Boyd with hands on knees, Mason salutes the crowd, slaps Boyd on the back congratulatory style, Boyd stands up, pushes Mason away and walks off ? Was it toxic tampon syndrome or is Boyd just a knob ?

I think Boyd was feeling pretty crap at dropping the ball with a minute to go and giving the dogs a shot at levelling the game up...That shows a bit of passion to me.

Was waiting for someone to bring this up... Think he was annoyed at his own game and felt as though he could have cost us.

Like I said he's going through stuff at the moment off field that would be messing with the head.

Don't think he was all too thrilled with Mason's energy after the game.

Yeah he just looked devastated that he dropped that ball, he must've said that to Mason because Mase sort of nodded his head and gave him a pat.

HA-HA! We're gonna win four in a row! Bye, win, win, bye! FOUR IN A ROW! It counts! 2 points, 2 points, 2 points, 2 points. Oh the joy! :/

Haven't seen the game but a very good result indeed. Sets you up very nicely after the origin series now.

Thought the game was pretty crap to be honest, we had a few chances that we didn't score off, and so did they. Was a pretty error riddled game, but still glad we came away with the win.

The game reminded me of a night out. Prior to going out you plan to have a great time, take home the hottest chick in the joint, make love to her over and over again then wake up the next morning to find out it wasn't a dream and she's still a good sort. Instead you go from club to club, struggle to see a decent looking sheila in any of them and in the end go home with a really ugly hag and the the only good things are you got the 2 points and don't get crabs.
