Uate honoured for All Stars return
For the second time in his career, Newcastle Knights winger Aku Uate will line up for the NRL All Stars, when they take on the Indigenous All Stars at Suncorp Stadium on February 9 2013.
“I was really surprised when I heard the news and can’t wait to get up there and rip in,” he told Knights TV.
“It really means a lot to me to have been voted in the team by the fans.
“It is a great way to start the year and I am really happy to get another chance to represent the All Stars.”
Uate will be joined in camp by teammate Willie Mason, who will make his All Stars debut after being selected by coach Wayne Bennett.
“I am really excited for Willie and am looking forward to seeing him back in a rep jersey,” he said.
“It will be great to have him around and I know that he will go up there and do his best.”
Knights centre Timana Tahu will also make his All Stars debut next month after being picked in the Indigenous side by coach Laurie Daley.
“I don’t think I will be able to look at him on the field because I will probably laugh,” Uate joked.
“In saying that I can’t wait to play against him, it will be a good experience.”

We'll wait & see. There was only 3 withdrawals last year & 4 the year before that. I think people tend to exaggerate how many players are withdraw from this game because of the first one, that was an absolute injury massacre.

Tahu plays for his family
Timana Tahu will make his All Stars debut next month and the Newcastle Knights centre said it will be a special moment for not only him, but also for his family and friends.
“It is an honour to be picked to represent the Indigenous All Stars," Tahu told Knights TV.
“I was going to go up to Brisbane during the week to watch the Newcastle Yowies play for the Australian Indigenous and Torres Strait champions title.
“Most of my family are going up there for the week so it will be a special moment which I can share with my Yowie teammates.
“It means a lot to my family and when I run on to the field I will be doing it for my wife and kids.”
Tahu was selected to take part in the All Stars game by coach Laurie Daley.
“Laurie is a legend and I really appreciate him picking me for this great game,” he said.
“I have been trying to get a hold of him and can’t wait to thank him.
“Growing up, the Canberra Raiders were my team and Laurie Daley one of my favourite players.
“I got to work with him in Country and Origin and it means a lot to have been picked by him.”
With the Knights pre-season in full swing, Tahu says he is concentrating on working hard for the Club but can’t hide his excitement for next month’s game.
“I take pride in all the jumpers I have been lucky enough to play in,” the centre explained.
“It is not just another rep jersey for us players but something for the young kids and fans to look forward to during the pre-season.
“Queenslanders love their footy and I am expecting a good turnout come game day.”

AUSTRALIAN, Queensland and Storm superstar Billy Slater has been ruled out of the NRL All Stars side because of ankle and shoulder injuries.
He is replaced by Melbourne young gun Justin O’Neill for the fourth annual clash against the Indigenous All Stars at Suncorp Stadium on February 9.
Slater's pre-season training has been hampered since aggravating an ankle injury and due to the removal of a plate in his shoulder from an injury sustained in the 2011 Four Nations Tour.
It's believed his withdrawal is not related to a PCL injury in his knee, which cut short his Origin campaign.
Slater went on to carry the injury right through the back end of the season, but still starred in Melbourne’s surge to the 2012 title.
Slater will continue on a modified program with the goal of being fit for the club’s World Club Challenge match on February 22 against Leeds Rhinos.
"It's disappointing Billy won’t be able to play, but I'm excited and honoured to be part of the NRL All Stars team and I’m looking forward to playing with and against some of the best players in the competition," O’Neill said.
"I have family living in Brisbane so it will be very special to play my first representative game in front of them."

What All Stars means to Mason
Newcastle Knights forward Willie Mason told Knights TV he feels privileged to be given the opportunity to represent the NRL All Stars next month in Brisbane.
“This time last year my career was in limbo and thanks to Wayne (Bennett) and the Knights it has been resurrected and I am loving every minute of it,” he said.
“I have been watching the All Stars games for the last three years and I think it is a great concept.
“I am really happy to have been picked to be part of it all and can’t wait to get out there.
“Queensland always show up for a massive game so it will be an unbelievable atmosphere at Suncorp.”
Along with Melbourne Storm’s Cooper Cronk, Mason was chosen by Bennett as part of his ‘Coach’s Selections’.
"Wayne is probably the most respected coach in the NRL and has won every accolade in the game,” Mason said.
“He has coached some wonderful players throughout his career and to have his seal of approval not only gives me a great confidence boost but also means a lot to me.”
Mason said after everything he has been through, he can really appreciate what it means to receive the All Stars jersey.
“Early in your career you probably take getting picked consecutively for Australia and NSW for granted,” the forward explained.
“You think it is just part and parcel of football until you start getting injuries and your form drops.
“That is when you really start to appreciate every jersey that you get and every time you train and play.”

Quick taps and restarting the tackle count for ruck infringements will be among the experimental rules on show in the Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars clash at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium next Saturday, February 9.
NRL General Manager of Football Operations, Mr Nathan McGuirk, said this year’s match would feature three experimental rules aimed at enhancing the attacking nature of the All Stars contest.
“The All Stars match is designed to provide fans with an attacking spectacle and it provides a great opportunity for us to trial some experimental rules,” Mr McGuirk said.
“These changes will certainly add to the speed of the game and also reward teams for attacking kicking.”
The experimental rules are:
Ruck Penalties
- For infringements in the ruck area by the defending team (holding down, leg pull, hand on ball etc.) which does not result in the breakdown of play (i.e. drop ball), the referee will indicate the infringement by blowing his whistle and signaling the infringement. The match referee will then immediately signal the restart of the tackle count which shall occur at the point of the infringement with a zero tackle.
- There will be no kick for touch for these infringements. Play will continue immediately from the point of the infringement via a play the ball.
- Any foul play in the ruck area by the defending team will result in a traditional penalty.
- Any infringement by the attacking team in the ruck area will result in a traditional penalty.
Quick Restarts
- This will see an extension of the quick restart from the 20m, with players allowed quick penalty tap kicks/restarts (apart from ruck penalties) from the point of the offence. Captains questioning decisions will be restricted to when they are in possession and scrums.
Restarts from Kicks
- For any attacking team that kicks the ball from the outside the opponents 30m line (30m from try line) and the ball goes dead in-goal, the opponent will receive the ball via a handover (tap restart) from the point where the kick originated once the match officials are in place.
