Swap Mullen and Stig around. Seriously, one guy grew up playing 5/8, and has been playing there pretty much his whole first grade career, the other grew up playing halfback. How hard is it to realise.

Apart form that, good team. Hopefully Ciraldo will put in his simple decent performance again, and good to see Costigan and Tui back

Love that side, exactly what I posted in the "Your team vs Titans" thread.

On swapping Mullen and Stig, they're just numbers on their backs.
Looking at last weeks game Gidley played almost as much first receiver as Mullen.

I would get Mullen to take the long kicks and Stig to take the short attacking kicks though.

Really good tema, happy Tetevano gets another chance. Karawana is a good 18th man aswell, he could go to the bench and wouldn't miss a beat.

Comon Newcastle, 2 in a row. Wests should lose to Manly so hopefully we'll grab 7th. NZ are playing Canberra, they'll probably win but you never know with the Raiders.

Exactly they are just numbers. Its hard to get an idea of who exactly contributes what to organisation & how they do it. One thing I dont understand is how people say Mullen is a 5/8th, let's be honest people hes a struggling ball player. I believe Mullens talent lies in his vision (& of course his long kicking). If you compare Stig to Mullen at 2nd receiver Stig is clearly the better ball player & ball runner, where as Mullen is awesome at getting the team to where they need to be around the park which imo is an earmark for a halfback.

Good looking team. Its great to see Tui and Costigan back, but the loss of Fa'as is a big one. I'm glad Stone picked Lulia over Maddog, hopefully thats how it is for the rest of the season..

If he's not injured it's quite obvious he's been dropped. Not needed I suppose means the same.

I'm surprise he's been dropped, been going well despite being our last choice forward. But I guess with Tetevano in the side there aren't many spots left that make up the bench.

No, he's just not needed. He has a specific role in the team & that is lock forward. Edwards is starting with Hilder to replace him when Eddo needs a rest. Therefore Southern isn't needed. If his role included second-row, he'd be in that 18 man team before Tetevano, Ciraldo, Karawana etc.

I always find it weird that people say halfback and 5/8 are just numbers on the back. It seems to me that with 80% or more of sides, the halfback does more organising and the 5/8 does more running. Including us.

People wanting Mullen to move to 5/8 want him to do less organising and playmaking, and more running of the ball, anyway. Or that's my interpretation.

Kicking in general play can really be one or the other.

Sounds about right.

More or less, but you do see a different first receiver alot in our backline movements. & its the first receiver more often then not that comes up with the ideas & the 5/8th just finishes it of

A lot of that came from having the half on one side of the field/ruck and the 5/8 on the other. Effectively controlling one side each.

Traditionally this was the case and the 7. would always be first receiver.

These days alot of teams will play a receiver either side of the ruck or chop and change through the game. It really has become meaningless for most teams, including us.

If Mullen plays on Sunday I would wager he will "share" first receiver with Gidley.
As for organising, unless you call constantly turning the ball back inside with an ill-timed pass "organising", I haven't seen him do much of that at all this year.
The hooker handles most of it coming of our own line and we're usually a rabble in attack.

Might be a good thing if he is not organising as much, might see some different tactics and a few different last play options.

There is an article in todays tele. Apparently Mullens scans revealed a slight tear & he won't be playing this Sunday. I wonder if gids goes to 7 who goes to 1?? Could be very interesting, hopefully Matautia
