EVEN as Jamal Idris was being personally wooed by smiling rivals in Newcastle, the Bulldogs last night remained supremely confident of keeping their most marketable star in the fold.
While The Daily Telegraph's exclusive pictures of Idris's three-hour tour around Ausgrid Stadium will come as a sobering shock to the blue and white army,
Canterbury CEO Todd Greenberg knew the 20-year-old was headed north up the F3 yesterday.
Immediately after his devastating role in the Bulldogs' first-up win over Wests Tigers on Monday night,
Idris approached Greenberg in the victorious dressing rooms to talk about his plans to inspect Knights HQ. The Bulldogs have been in talks with the off-contract superstar and his manager Sam Ayoub for months about an extension but are yet to make an offer.
Newcastle have been lurking in the wings for just as long and yesterday emerged as a genuine chance by luring Idris back to the club where he was graded as a Harold Matthews teen in 2005.
"It was no surprise that Jamal went to Newcastle - we encouraged him to go," Greenberg said. "We understand this is a big decision for Jamal ... but we have also made the point that it's not a decision to be made on purely commercial terms."
Both Newcastle and Gold Coast - who also confirmed their interest in the NSW Origin centre last night - are capable of trumping the Bulldogs for cash. Any offer Newcastle make is expected to come with the backing of billionaire would-be-owner Nathan Tinkler, while the Titans are in search of a strike centre to add punch to their three-quarter line.
But Bulldogs officials are confident the charismatic Idris can better realise his off-field appeal in Sydney, where lucrative third-party deals are more abundant. It's believed they are prepared to offer a three-year extension, with talks to continue later this week.
"Jamal has made it clear he wants to stay and we have made it clear he is a priority signing for us," Greenberg said. "Now it is up to us to come up with the commercial terms to make that happen."
With Ayoub in the drivers' seat, Idris was whisked straight up the F3 from the Bulldogs' recovery at Homebush Bay. He arrived just after lunch and Knights coach Rick Stone and recruitment head Keith Onslow were on hand to greet him.
The four met for talks for over an hour, before Idris was taken on a full tour of the stadium and playing surface.
"It's the first I've met him and I've got to say he really impressed me," Stone said.
"He seems a very mature young guy. I know he has an affection for the town because he's up here quite a bit; at the end of the day it's obviously going to be his decision. [We chatted] about the footy side of things and ... his aspirations in that regard."
Onslow shapes as a key to the Knights' hopes, having worked at the Bulldogs when Idris left the Knights to join the Belmore club in 2006.
At the time, the young Idris was living with his mother in Forster and found the 90-minute drive too far.
He moved to Bankstown to live with his father, who still resides in Sydney with his little brother. Newcastle are banking that their proximity to Idris's relatives in Forster will help their bid but Idris recently purchased an apartment in Parramatta, which he shares with his girlfriend.
Titans coach John Cartwright also confirmed the Gold Coast club were in the mix for Idris's signature.
