Matt Orford eyes Manly return

EXCLUSIVE by Josh Massoud
The Daily Telegraph
May 29, 2010

FORMER Dally M medallist Matt Orford is eyeing a shock return to the NRL as he battles homesickness in the gloomy north of England.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Orford's manager George Mimis yesterday left Sydney for the UK to meet the veteran half, who quit Manly midway through the pre-season to take up a rich contract with Super League giants Bradford Bulls.

Orford, however, has struggled to adjust to life away from the Northern Beaches over the first six months of his three-year deal and is understood to be close to asking Bradford for a release on compassionate grounds.

And in a further twist, it can be revealed Mimis has already made preliminary contact with a handful of NRL clubs - including the Sea Eagles.

The shock development came on a busy day for rugby league overseas.

Hodkinson going to the Dogs

CANTERBURY are planning to take an $800,000 gamble by signing a rookie who has played just nine first-grade games.

After missing out on Parramatta halves Kris Keating and Daniel Mortimer, the Bulldogs have opened their chequebook in a bid to snare Manly's City Origin halfback Trent Hodkinson.

Disappointed Manly officials have all but conceded the 21-year-old will sign with the Dogs this week.

The Bulldogs have dangled the huge carrot in front of Hodkinson in the wake of prop Ben Hannant's move back to Brisbane.

The Sunday Telegraph has also learned that the Bulldogs are poised to free up more room in the salary cap, with veteran fullback Luke Patten considering a move to the UK Super League.

But signing Hodkinson to a three-year deal is the club's priority, with the former Parramatta junior regarded as the club's long-term replacement for NSW halfback Brett Kimmorley.

Hodkinson has been a revelation alongside young Kiwi Kieran Foran this season as Manly have covered for the loss of grand final-winning No 7 Matt Orford.

"We've identified him as a player of interest (and) I can confirm we've been in negotiations with his manager for a period of time," Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said. Hodkinson has said he wants to stay at Brookvale following his sudden rise to prominence this season under coach Des Hasler.

But even Hasler can recognises an offer that's too good to refuse.

Despite offering the promising No 7 a four-year deal, the Sea Eagles can't match the money offered by the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have every intention to extend Kimmorley's career by a further season.

Should they lure Hodkinson to the club, they would boast a plethora of halves, including Ben Roberts and Ben Barba.

With a decision on Patten's future expected within two weeks, the club's interest in Canberra fullback Josh Dugan is set to spike.

The Bulldogs see Dugan as the perfect replacement for Patten.
The veteran fullback, who has played 10 seasons with Canterbury, has a get-out clause at the end of this season and is seriously considering an offer from Super League club Huddersfield for the next three years.

"Huddersfield, among others, have made an offer for him," said Patten's agent George Mimis, who left for London on Friday.

Mimis is expected to return home in two weeks when the veteran fullback's future should be determined

I would be extremely suprised if there not found doing a repeat of 2002.

The fact that have stars and rep players like - Pattern, Turner, Morris, Idris, Goodwin, Kimmorely, Stagg, Ryan, Ennis and Hodgson in there team. Then they signed up Barba to a lucrative 4 yr deal, as the long term replacement of Kimmorley. Then they sign Tolman up for big bucks. Now they've gonna sign Hodkinson up on a big deal to replace Kimmorley, but they still signing him up for another year, which f*cks over Barba and Roberts. But barba is now patterns replacement, but not if he goes this year and they go after Dugan who will get big bucks. And even if he doesnt he'll still be getting a bit. In addition to that there chasing after Blair, lima, Manu, and gods know else.

Does anyone else find it hard to fathom how they fit under the 4.1 million $ salary cap, or is it just me

If what you just said is true, well yes. This all sounds very, very suspicious to me aswell. It is hard to tell also because they are geting rid of a few quality players in Kimmorley, Patten ( looks like it ), and Ben Hannant.

Panthers withdraw from re-signing Gordon to get Inglis.

That is absolute ridiculous tbh.

Thats a very bulldog-like manoeuvre.

I love how everyone signs on to not poach Sotrm players this year, and yet the knights, the team that has the most money and needs players the most are the only ones following it like its the written law.

Just read it on Fox sports then. Gordon is a very good player and brings so much to a team, he is fairly fast, a great goal kicker and a solid defender. Inglis is really hot and cold and only ever seems to perform come origin time, not only that but would take up a lot of cap space.

I think the Gordon case will be like Farah at the Titans and Nathan Friend.

If they sign Inglis then see you Flash. But if they don't they will re-sign Gordon.

Harsh on the player.

Melbourne have to grant the release of the players they choose to release. We are in a good position tbh our roster isnt to strong we have heaps of cap space and we arnt trying to scab the players.I can see us and the Sharks doing well from this.:dancing:

I know lol, that why i said we where, but theres the problem. We arnt trying to scab players. Recruitment s sitting on they're collective ar*ses about the storm situation and going after has beens and makeshifts. I can see us getting squat from the situation and having a bad sign list. That is unfortunately how imcompetent the recruiters are.

EDIT: Actually maybe that is a good idea to capatilise on Gordon, if Mad Dog retires & Vunas going anyway i would much rather have Gordon then Lulia or Wes becoming starters thats for sure.

But pretty harsh with the whole Inglis thing on him.

Not sure how reliable it is but apparantly word is going around Cronulla that Newcastle are ready to table an offer to Sharks winger Issac Gordon. From what I've seen of him he isn't a bad player but certainly wouldn't get into our first grade squad

Well he did look promising, especially in the game agaist the knights. And he is incredibly quick.

Rumours also have it that the sharks are actually keen on getting Michael Gordon.
