However well Leeds begin the defence of their Super League crown, they are guaranteed an early-season boost when star signing Danny Buderus makes his eagerly-awaited debut.
The former Australian Test hooker, who turns 31 on the day the Rhinos kick off Super League XIV against Celtic Crusaders, is on track to make his comeback from biceps surgery a month into the new campaign.
The injury forced him to miss the last six weeks of the Australian season with Newcastle Knights, but he is hoping to sit out just three matches at the most with his new club.
"The rehab has gone very well," reports Buderus, who also spent six months out of the game in 1998 after undergoing a shoulder re-construction.
"It's just about getting the other parts of my body up to scratch and then getting back into it.
"I'm three or four weeks away now. I got the clearance last week from the doctor, so I'm ready to get into the physical stages.
"I began contact work two weeks ago, and it's starting to get a bit more intense now."
Buderus is arguably the biggest close-season recruit for Super League in 2009, having severed his links with his home-town club after 14 years. After arriving in this country in December, he is itching to get started.
"I gave all I could to Newcastle," he said.
"It was time to move on. It's a new challenge and an exciting time for me and my family.
"I've been lucky enough to be in a good team over the years over there, and to be part of one of the real forces in world rugby league is a great privilege.
"It's been a big move and something I've not taken for granted. I could have probably finished my career off in Australia. I was contracted for this year and I'm a loyal sort of person, a pretty down-to-earth fella.
"But I just thought it was time for a change. I wanted to test myself over here. I've always had ambitions to play here, and to be involved in a great club at this stage of my career is really appealing.
"I know I've got to hit the ground running. It's a new situation for me, where I get to play with a new bunch of team-mates - so it's a big challenge, but one I'm ready for."
Buderus will bring to Headingley a wealth of experience and a professional attitude that has made him one of the great ambassadors of the game.
He made 222 appearances in 10 seasons of NRL for the Knights and won the prestigious Dally M Medal, the equivalent of Super League's Man of Steel award, in 2004.
The hooker captained New South Wales to back-to-back State of Origin Series victories and led Australia in 2005 in the absence of Darren Lockyer.
At his peak, Buderus was bracketed with Keiron Cunningham as the world's best hooker and he kept current Kangaroo number nine Cameron Smith on the sidelines for long enough.
But he is not taking his place at Leeds for granted.
He has been handed the number nine jersey but faces a battle for the starting role with Matt Diskin, who has a Great Britain cap to his name and will have a head start on his rival.
"I know I've got to start again and earn respect from my team-mates," added Buderus.
"They've got a great hooker in Matt Diskin, and I'm enjoying working with him."
Buderus is hoping he can add something to the Rhinos as they seek to complete a unique hat-trick of Super League titles - and after going on the club's pre-season training camp to Florida, he is full of confidence for the long-term future of the club.
"I was really impressed with the players coming through," said Buderus, who has signed a two-year deal.
"There is a lot to be excited about with the juniors, and a lot of senior players are only just starting on their careers - so there is a good feeling at this club.
"There is only one way for Leeds to go now, and we don't want to go that way. Everybody is going to work hard to make sure this outfit stays where it should be, because every other team is going to want to knock Leeds off.
"A lot of hard work has gone into the club over the years, and I hope to be working with the senior players group to make them a force for years to come.
"I've been around for a little while but I've got some good games ahead of me. I'm confident we can win some more titles here."
