Who should be number 7 for next season?

Oh yeah i don’t want Brooks, I just think it will happen lol. Would prefer Hastings. Would also prefer Cam Munster but nice things don’t happen to us in Newy

newcastle need to make a hit list:
1. Hastings
2. Hastings
and 3. probably ****ing hastings

Shown this season he's a real leader, and can direct the team around the park. Strong in defence, solid running game and good talk in attack. Doesn't have the best kicking skills but that's not what we are looking for we just need someone to steer the bloody ship. Leave majority of the kicking to Clifford, and use Ponga and Hastings when needed. Newy should be doing everything in their power to get him there as soon as it hits November 1.

Brooks has the same mental fortitude as Clifford, and we've seen what the coaching staff at the club were able to do about that.
Another lean few years for the knights unfortunately.
We need a coach who can build the confidence of our team, apart from a gun halfback, that is the main thing our team needs.

I actually think Luke Brooks is going to start at 7 for us next year, having thought about it more. I know Sheens has come out and said he and Doueihi will be the starting halves next year for Wests, but it’s not a good negotiating tactic to make it clear you don’t want him - they’ll want us paying as much of his contract as possible.

The thing that makes me think he’s gonna leave Wests after all is in his last media availability he basically said he’s not going to re-sign for Wests after 2023. He said something about how he’s always looked to stay loyal rather than do what’s best for him, and he’s gonna do what’s best for him next time. In which case it’s a very bad idea to keep him, like what’s the point then?

With AOB at the club thinking about his job, he will take whatever name halfback he can get who’s an upgrade on Clune, because he has to do better next year or he’s out. And look, I want to say Clune is better than Brooks, but he just isn’t. Add to that Joey in AOB’s ear telling him he’s the guy to get the best out of Brooks, and the fact Luke’ll be getting out of the city and playing for a club where all the pressure and media scrutiny already gets placed on a different, better player… I think the mutual interest will be there to make it happen. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t come at this stage.
Parr is in control of the hiring and firing, there is a hope he could block it but if the head coach and the clubs greatest player are all telling him to sign Brooks.. not sure he would stand in the way.

He can be such an off-the-cuff player, could be good to open up the seemingly structured style of football we play. I read an article on fox that the Rooster's cap would be stretched next year, with current player contracts and player upgrades.
When there are news articles about the Roosters being stretched for cap space you can rest assured that they're publicising the need to let Keary go.

Keary could be a good signing but again more in the mould of a roaming half. But he did win them that premise as the dominant half. He's a gun player.

Yeah, not confident on Brooks either. I think we could be taking a gamble with him.

The Roosters simply don’t lose players as important to their future as Sam Walker, no matter what the cap situation is.

What do we think of Adam Clune? Do you think if he didn't get that leg injury he would've be been much better? He is pretty fast. Those first two games we won he looked pretty good. Defensively?

Unfortunately you are right. And what about Phoenix Crossland? Not of the same Ilk. Maybe if the coach gives him a good go at seven? But if he was the best option for the position surely that would have be seen at training.

Hastings doesn’t have as big of a boot but he’s definitely kicked better than Clifford has this year.

Either way I favour splitting the kicking between multiple players rather than having one player do most of it. You can only really get away with handing one player the reins like that if your team is physically dominant or organises its blockers well, neither of which have applied to us. The only other way to reduce the pressure your kickers are under is to make it so it’s not obvious who’s getting the ball.

Ok, I pulled out the list of off-contact halves for 2022 and 2023 from the NRL

So in terms of the spine knowing lock-ins are Ponga and Brailey, who would you have?
On this list, is unlikely, and who could be possible for 2023, 2024.

Obviously also in contention is Ponga goes into the halves and we have a new full-back.

Here they are:

2022 - all 7's

Phoenix Crossland
Kurt Falls
Cooper Johns
Albert Kelly
Jock Madden
Brandon Wakeham
Sam Williams

2023
tyson-gamble - 5/8
kyle-flanagan - 7
braydon-trindall - 7
shaun-johnson - 7
jake-clifford - 7
adam-clune - 7
jakob-arthur - 7
Luke Brooks - 7
Jackson Hastings - 5/8

Available but unlikely in my opinion
cameron-munster - 5/8
blake-taaffe - 7
ben-hunt - 7
Sam walker - 7

You missed: Adam Doueihi (gets listed as a fullback on ZT I think), Mitchell Moses, Jack Wighton and Matt Burton (player options).

Yeah, I saw Doueihi in the list. I would put him also in the unlikely category. Tigers will wrap him up long-term.
Interesting the player options.
Mitch Moses
Jack Wighton and
Matt Burton

I think all of them will play for their clubs next year, but the year after is interesting.
So who would you like to see? Ideally for next season, otherwise 2024
