Who should be number 7 for next season?

Hey All, I read some of the posts on the Mitch peace thread. But thought this needs a new thread.

How hindsight is a wonderful thing. Letting Pearcy go without a "good" replacement has cost us dearly this season. Unfortunately Clune was not the man. I think a good backup but we need to get a quality 7, what ever it's takes!

I think Bevan French is a done deal. He can play on the wing/centre and backup to Ponga when not playing. If we can't get a good 7 then putting Ponga in the six and French at the back might be the best solution. But, obviously the clubs primary focus needs to be on the 7 jersey.

So who is available and who is the best option for Newcastle? These guys are what I'm aware who are available, and current players.

Adam Clune, Phoenix Crossland, Luke Brooks, Jackson Hastings. And I hear Sam Walker is off contract next year.

From all the commentary I've heard Hastings would be better suited at Newcastle than Brooks. But if we can make a play for Sam Walker we need to go all in on him. Move players on if we have to.

I don't understand why our recruitment didn't make bids for guys like Nico Hynes, Adam Renolds, Chad Townsend? Cap? Look at how those clubs are going now.

Keen to here everyone's thoughts on who you think should we buy or put at 7 next season?

We need a proven and experienced playmaker.
I doubt we could get him, but given our current predicament, I'd ring that George Williams guy who played for Canberra and ask him if a million dollars could cure his homesickness and get him to Newcastle.

As far as why we didn't chase them.. we thought we had Pearce for this year.. I think we should have been looking for Pearces replacement anyway but.. here we are.

I also think they thought they would get Brooks. But Sheen's seemed to put a stop to that. Your right if we had foresight we could have been in the run for one of the 3 half's (Hynes, Renolds, Townsend). Imagine if we got Hynes.

I think Sam walker would be great roosters are going better now that he is doing the 7 roll instead of the 6 he still really young and will have his up and downs but think he is worth throwing big money at to try and get him out of roosters he is not yet a finished product but think he could have a Thurston like impact for the knights don't know if he'll be as good but I see him as being a top 5 half in a couple of years

Whoever it is I hope they pick and stick the musical chairs we have going on atm in the halves would’ve really been deflating for the players making it hard to play with confidence thinking in the back of your mind you’ll get hooked

He can be such an off-the-cuff player, could be good to open up the seemingly structured style of football we play. I read an article on fox that the Rooster's cap would be stretched next year, with current player contracts and player upgrades.

I read the same article about the roosters and the cap and it only serves to annoy me more. I think as a club we have been shafted by circumstance at a time when we had our cap sorted and could've added some quality. First it was the timing of Pearce leaving. Then it was the emergence of the dolphins. Now when a club like the Roosters might actually have to shed a player or two, the cap looks like it will go up and negate that need. We've had cash to spend the last couple of years seemingly, but circumstances seem against us.

Would have much preferred one of the other two…

I actually think Luke Brooks is going to start at 7 for us next year, having thought about it more. I know Sheens has come out and said he and Doueihi will be the starting halves next year for Wests, but it’s not a good negotiating tactic to make it clear you don’t want him - they’ll want us paying as much of his contract as possible.

The thing that makes me think he’s gonna leave Wests after all is in his last media availability he basically said he’s not going to re-sign for Wests after 2023. He said something about how he’s always looked to stay loyal rather than do what’s best for him, and he’s gonna do what’s best for him next time. In which case it’s a very bad idea to keep him, like what’s the point then?

With AOB at the club thinking about his job, he will take whatever name halfback he can get who’s an upgrade on Clune, because he has to do better next year or he’s out. And look, I want to say Clune is better than Brooks, but he just isn’t. Add to that Joey in AOB’s ear telling him he’s the guy to get the best out of Brooks, and the fact Luke’ll be getting out of the city and playing for a club where all the pressure and media scrutiny already gets placed on a different, better player… I think the mutual interest will be there to make it happen. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t come at this stage.

It’s so unfair to announce it now when clubs have mostly settled rosters hey. Oh look, only the Roosters can take really massive advantage of it! What a true shock that the Roosters are benefitting from the decision of a rugby league official!

The Roosters have Crichtons contract sitting there waiting to be registered. It will be once the salary cap hike is announced. Probably one for Walker as well. The top clubs won't be outbid on players in the next couple of years, meanwhile we still can't fill our cap properly. Probably makes juniors even more important.

You could be right HarVeeGee. Depends on the cap situation and how much we have. My prefrence probably would be Hastings as we might get him a bit cheaper? But I wouldn't be let down if they sigh Brooks. After all he was the Dally M half of the year! I can't remember that 2016 I think he won, he may have got lucky. But yeah Joey keeps raving about his potential, which could sway the pendulum in Brooks favor. With Brooks, it could be a make or break with us. There would be pressure on him in Newcastle also.

7. Trindall.

Best halfback in reserve grade.
He's playing reserves for the Sharkys right? Is he killing it reserve grade? How are they going as a team? I'm just concerned he may similar to Adam Clune. Hastings has won the man of steel in the super league. You'd have to think the English super league is a stronger comp than NSW reserves.
