NSW overpowered Queensland 12-8 in game one of the State of Origin at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

Knights' Darius Boyd was Queensland’s star, scoring all 8 of the team's points.

Boyd opened the score for Queenland with a try in the corner before crossing the line a second time in the 58[SUP]th[/SUP] minute.

The early try meant Boyd had scored the more first-half tries than any other player in Origin history, with a total of 11.

His second try earned him equal place with Queensland teammate Greg Inglis as the most prolific tryscorer in Origin history with 14 tries.

Newcastle Knights' Beau Scott also represented NSW in the number 11 jersey playing a crucial part in the winning team's
defence.

Woohoo. Finally got back home. Lost my voice haha. A few things from that game: The No. 1 jersey belongs to Hayne now. We kept Inglis quiet all game, and Thurston for most of it. Darius is playing out of position for the Knights. Our team will get better with Fifita and Bird returning, and finally, Mitchell Pearce will never see an origin jumper ever again :dancing:

There's a lot more positives that came out of that match, but go NSW!! Now if only the Knights can defend like that...

What a night. What a finish. What a game.

NSW went to Queensland at record odds to win their opening State of Origin at Suncorp Stadium since 2003.

But walking away with an historic 12-8 victory they now return to home with the chance to wrap up their first series win since 2005 on June 18 at ANZ Stadium.

And when you sit down and crunch the numbers on last night’s performance it’s easy to see where the Blues gained their control.At half-time last night the most vital statistic separating the two teams was wasn’t the 10-4 scoreline but overall possession.

NSW had an astonishing 63 per cent of the ball in the opening 40 minutes to Queensland’s 37 per cent.

And with that the Blues dominated on almost every front.They had completed 16 of 17 sets in the first half to the Maroons’ 12 of 15, while the home team had made a total of 159 tackles to NSW’s 102.

Paul Gallen, predictably, was leading the way for the Blues with 113 metres from 14 runs.

He just never stops.

Woods had run for 72 metres at the break, Farah 47, Tamou 45, Scott 54, Hoffman 47. And off the bench Watmough had made 50 metres, Merrin 30 and Tony Williams 19.

For Queensland Matt Scott was in front with 87 metres but, significantly, the next best was Corey Parker with only 39 and Nate Myles was the only other forward who had made more than 30 metres for the Maroons in the opening 40 minutes.

And with that dominance in the forwards, it allowed Hayne to take charge.He orchestrated the Blues’ first try for Brett Morris before he stepped and steamrolled his way over Johnathan Thurston for the second.

Queensland’s only aim at that break would have been to build pressure.

And that is exactly what they did.Big T Rex’s try saver on Aidan Guerra in the 50th minute was crucial, as was Billy’s Slater on Hayne in the 51st.

And back and forth it went all night.

What a game the 100th State of Origin will be remembered for.

Queensland had done remarkably well to remain only eight points behind but then again these clashes almost always come down to who wants it most.

And when Boyd crossed for his second in the 57th minute it was well and truly game on.Still trailing 12-8, the possession percentage was still heavily favouring NSW to the tune of 57-47 while the total tackles was 215 for the Maroons and 161 for the Blues.

But it was getting closer by the minute _ and Queensland, as is their way, just kept coming.The job for the Blues was to go with them.

By the 60th minute the Maroons had reduced the possession gap to 47-53 per cent.

Their patience appeared to be paying off.But with their backs to the wall, the Blues refused to surrender their lead.

Hayne was simply outstanding in attack and defence.Gallen was enormous.

Brett Morris’ effort to deny Boyd his hat-trick was all courage.

Hayne came up with another desperation try saving effort in the 79th minute.

Who would have thought?

Hayne was the hero but all over the park every one of the Blues more than did their job.

And now for the return game at ANZ Stadium on June 18.

Suddenly it’s the ball is in the Blues’ court.

Now let’s see how Queensland handle the pressure.

Emotional Daley lauds NSW courage

An emotional NSW coach Laurie Daley has lauded the courage of his battered troops who scraped out an unlikely Origin I win, with several players playing through serious injuries which will potentially keep them out long-term.

Brett Morris looked to briefly dislocate a shoulder in the first half scoring a try but played on to make a match-saving tackle on former Dragons teammate Darius Boys in the dying minutes.

Anthony Watmough played through a serious bicep injury that may keep him out for some time, while Daley said Josh Morris and Trent Hodkinson were among others playing through pain.

Captain Paul Gallen stayed down after another huge late hit from behind from Josh Papalii after he had passed the ball.

He said after the match he had been getting burners in his neck and would need to go for scans.

"One of the most courageous efforts I've ever seen," Daley said when asked for his thoughts.

"I'm extremely proud, we had no ball, some other things were against us but geez I was proud."

Daley refused to be drawn on some tough refereeing calls that went against his side, focusing instead on the guts shown by his unfancied side after their upset win.

"We've got a truckload of injuries. We've got serious injuries," he said.

"We've got blokes that battled away that should have come off in the first half but courageously stayed out there because we needed them to and I hope everyone talks about that tomorrow.

"They dug deep. We've spoken about Origin and digging deep and they showed it tonight in truckloads."

He admitted to being emotional after the win, even producing a slip of the tongue by referring to the players as his "teammates" before correcting himself, highlighting how deeply he rode the effort with his charges.

"For the boys to do what they did under those conditions, I'm one extremely happy coach and I'm certain the whole state would be happy.

"I think this win has united us more than ever before," he said.

He said after winning the first game last year the side isn't getting ahead of itself and needed to improve further for Game II.

Gallen described it as one of the toughest matches he'd ever played in.

"We played really smart in the first half, we controlled the ball, we controlled the flow of how the game went.

"They really aimed up, they're a great side, they're tough," he said.

"It was a credit to us the way we hung in there, they had a lot of kicks ... it was courageous the way we defended."

What’s the Buzz: Paul Gallen survives Papalii’s dog shot as Blues claim impossible victory

PAUL Gallen had to survive a dog shot from his arch rival Josh Papalii to lift NSW to an impossible victory at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

In the eighth minute of the second half, the Blues were on the attack when Gallen passed, relaxed and then got smashed from behind.

It was a carbon copy of the Sharks — Raiders semi-final from two years ago, when Papalii was responsible for exactly the same low act.

Unbelievably, referees Shayne Hayne and Ben Cummins plus the video referees took no action.

This low act should now officially become known as the coward tackle.

There is nothing brave about hitting a man from behind.

It is even more cowardly when the player has passed the football and is not expecting it.

Gallen recovered to turn in one of his most inspiring performances.

He needed medical attention on the sidelines but came back late in the game.

He played like an absolute machine in attack and defence.

Surely he can now be regarded as NSW’s best-ever forward.

Even better than Glenn Lazarus, better than Bradley Clyde, Paul Harragon or Steve Blocker Roach.

The Sharks skipper made 173m, the most of any forward on the field, and 29 bone-jarring tackles to lead the way for his team.

After two disappointing years at Cronulla under the cloud of an ASADA scandal, this Origin series is Gallen’s shot at redemption.

Leading the Blues to victory to end Queensland’s eight-year domination would be a fitting reward in Sydney in three weeks.

They say Origin games are often decided by the 50-50 refereeing calls.

The game was only three minutes old when the Blues paid for the first refereeing blunder.

Brent Tate clearly knocked on from a fifth tackle kick, which Daniel Tupou regathered before being thrown straight into touch.

It should have been a scrum with NSW feed but they inexplicably gave it to Queensland.

Darius Boyd went charging over in the left corner to get the Maroons off to a flying start.

Another close call went against the Blues in the dying stages.Luke Lewis went surging towards the line and Greg Inglis knocked the ball (forward) out of his arms.

It should have been a NSW scrum feed but the Maroons got the football and a late shot at victory.

Again, right on full-time, the referees called a knock-on against Trent Hodkinson.

It wasn’t, but it gave the Maroons one more chance.For once, the team that got the bounce of the ball lost.

NSW are now deservedly just 80 minutes away from ending the most painful eight years of Origin history.

HAYNE A SPECIAL ONE

THEY say Billy Slater is a future Immortal, an even better fullback than Graeme Changa Langlands.

Well, what does that make Jarryd Hayne?

Sure, he’s never played as consistently as Slater, but on his night there are few better.

His first-half performance was sensational, setting up the first try for Brett Morris and scoring the second himself.

This is the Hayne plane that won the 2009 Dally M award and steered the Eels to the grand final.

He has everything, the power, the acceleration, the step and the swerve.

He can make great players look ordinary.

He is a true Origin player.

WAKING FROM A KNIGHTMARE

IT had to happen.

The player who went into Origin opener in the most diabolical form of his career was the man who kept Queensland in the game.

Darius Boyd has been in dreadful form as a fullback in the spluttering Newcastle Knights backline since the start of the season.

He was picked for this game on reputation alone.

Boyd scored the first two Queensland tries, making the most of every opportunity that came his way.

Imagine how poor Knights fans were feeling watching the player who has struggled all year save his best for the biggest stage.

Boyd has a history of playing his best on the representative level and Tim Sheens has also often picked him for Australia despite his club form being poor.

HINDSIGHT

NATHAN Hindmarsh was always known for his courage on the football field — but ‘Hindy’ took bravery to a new level in Brisbane.

The Eels legend strutted his stuff outside the infamous Caxton Hotel wearing a sandwich board with the words “TALLIS IS A CAT” emblazoned on it.

PARTY TIME

MANY of sport’s biggest names couldn’t make it to Brisbane for the game.

Instead they celebrated Jeff Fenech’s 50th birthday at party at Ecco restaurant in Drummoyne.

The restaurant installed a giant screen for partygoers to enjoy the match.

NEW HOPPA

ANOTHER Hopoate launched his representative career at Suncorp.

Manly’s Harold Matthews centre Sione Hopoate turned out for NSW Under 16s against Queensland with older brother Will there to watch him.

SPOTTED

NSW legend Brett Kenny roaming Queen Street Mall sucking on a Hungry Jacks coke.

TONGUE TIED

WITH parliament sitting in Canberra, the corporate suites were almost politician-free at Suncorp for the big game.

Still, it didn’t stop the NRL from doing it’s usual networking and lobbying with all the political big hitters in Canberra.

The NRL’s chief operating officer Jim Doyle flew to the nation’s capital to host a Press Club dinner, where more than 100 politicians watched the game on the big screen.

Former Canberra Raiders stalwart Alan Tongue was MC for the evening.

THEY jeered and cursed Trent Hodkinson, but it was a different story 24 hours earlier when the Bulldogs halfback was being hounded for autographs and photos while shopping with Blues hooker Robbie Farah.

YOU little bloody ripper. Cop that Queensland.

Sick of losing, brave and brilliant NSW roared new life in State of Origin on Wednesday with an epic 12-8 win in State of Origin I before 52,111 rabid fans at Suncorp Stadium.

And victory - in the 100th State of Origin game - came on the back of NSW’s absolute superstar, the mighty Jarryd Hayne.

Hayne was superman. He is the best player in the world at the moment.

It was a gladiatorial battle, one of the fiercest Origin battles of all-time.

What a night.

NSW defended with power and passion, right up until fulltime.

It was a gripping finish with Queensland hammering the Blues tryline.

“It was one of the most courageous efforts I have ever seen - geez I am proud,” said NSW coach Laurie Daley.

“This win will unite us like never before.

“We had truckloads of injuries but they showed courage to stay out there.

"Look in our dressing room and you can see the pain they are in.

“Tonight’s performance under duress was as good as I have been associated with.

"It was special. That was one of NSW’s finest performances.”

One-nil up, NSW can set their focus on the June 18 return match at ANZ Stadium where the Blues will try and win the series and end Queensland’s eight year dominance.

Let’s see what Queensland is made of now.

Victory on Wednesday night will ensure an 82,500 sell at ANZ Stadium.

The Blues had not won an opening game in Brisbane since back in 2003.

Under pressure throughout extensive periods of the second half, NSW kept turning up in defence.

Tackle after tackle, set after set.Hayne, the official man of the match, was exceptional.

He kicked, he ran, he scored.No other player in the game could have produced such a solo, match-winning performance.

“He was outstanding,” Daley said.

With a new ruthless, hands-on attitude, Daley did it his way. And it worked.

He was emotional wreck by fulltime.

“Unbelievable defensive effort,” said NSW skipper Paul Gallen.

The Blues new halves combination of Trent Hodkinson and Reynolds were solid on Wednesday night.

Queensland ambushed NSW early but the Blues actually led at led at half-time.

They suddenly had belief.Both teams scored two tries each but Hodkinson’s two goals was the difference.

Queensland now come to Sydney under intense pressure to save the series - and their dynasty.

“It was tough but disappointing,” said Maroons fullback Billy Slater.

“There wasn’t too much between the two sides.”

The Maroons kept firing bullets at NSW right up until fulltime.

“I’m buggered,” said NSW five-eighth Josh Reynolds.

“It was the hardest game I have been in.”

The first half was tough, brutal, aggressive, controversial and entertaining.

Hayne set up Morris’ try by sliding past three defenders.

The Eels star then showed power and force to score the second try.

Both tries saw NSW target Johnathan Thurston.

“It’s that good,” said NSW prop Aaron Woods.

“We backed ourselves and we are as happy as.”

Underdogs NSW scored two tries to one to lead 10-4 at the break.

Queensland, as they so often do at Suncorp Stadium, enjoyed the perfect start, scoring in just the fifth minute before NSW scored two first half tries, with one each to Hayne and Brett Morris.

“It was really unfortunate we didn’t get the result “ said Maroons halfback Daly Cherry-Evans.

Some of the decisions which went Queensland’s way late in the game were bewildering.

Nothing though was going to stop the Blues.

It was a historic win.

“To get the win is unbelievable,” Hodkinson said.

Gallen added: “We will go to Sydney confident.”

I want to see the Knights start winning games before Mullo is considered for Origin, just because if the Knights keep losing, then 1. we will get destroyed with him unavailable & 2. if we keep losing then why should he be considered anyway if he can't lead us to win. Besides, i reckon atleast Sutton, Maloney & Pierce will be considered over Mullo by Laurie anyway.

All fair points, but i just can't see Daley picking Mullen over 2 guys that have been there in recent times, Daley would see Pierce & Maloney as the safe options.

I think it all depends on hodgkinsons selection, I can't see Maloney getting picked without Pearce, if he sticks with hodgkinsons (which I think he should) he will either go Sutton *sigh* .. Or Mullen, tbh I'd prefer bird in the 6 then Sutton.

He did have some good touches but if that's setting the world on fire than people are kidding themselves. If he plays against the Warriors with his effort from the Manly game he should be fine.

STATE of Origin is alive.

The NSW Blues held off the Maroons 12-8 in one of the great encounters at Suncorp Stadium, setting the scene for one hell of a series.These were the major talking points.

1. WAS IT THE BEST GAME EVER?

The short answer is no, but it was up there.

The intensity was extraordinary, there was plenty of drama and controversy and the finish was brilliant.

But Origin has had so many classics over its 100 games, dating right back to the very beginning, so that’s just way too big a call.

2. ‘ONE OF THE GREAT ORIGIN PERFORMANCES’

Those are the words of the one and only Andrew Johns, referring to fullback Jarryd Hayne’s majestic display for the Blues.

In the 33rd minute, Hayne forced his way out of a tackle from Johnathan Thurston close to the line to find his way over and give his side a lead it ultimately would not relinquish.

With his first touch of the footy in the second half, Hayne burst onto a kick return with so much intent you just knew this would be his night.

3. NSW WAS SHELLSHOCKED

Five minutes in, and with Queensland’s first chance with the footy in opposition territory, Darius Boyd scored a relatively soft try out wide.

Moments later Billy Slater stormed through the heart of the Blues defence.

It didn’t lead to a try that time, but the signs were ominous.

4. THE COOPER CRONK INJURY

With a player of the ilk of Daly Cherry-Evans at the ready to fill in from the bench, the loss of Cooper Cronk did not appear catastrophic at first for Queensland.

But NSW capitalised on the loss of the superstar playmaker, overcoming its poor start to slowly seize control and take an unlikely 10-4 half-time lead.

Cronk picked up the injury in the 10th minute in an apparent innocuous collision with teammate Nate Myles in a standard tackle.

5. BRENT TATE ‘FRIGHTENED’

In the 28th minute, Blues five-eighth Josh Reynolds was placed on report for an ugly tackle in which he flipped Queensland’s Brent Tate.

The crowd blew up and so did Tate’s Maroons teammates, who rushed in from all over the field – but no punches were thrown.

Reynolds now faces the prospect of missing Origin II after being hit with a grade two dangerous throw charge.

Tate was not injured in the incident but said:

“I have never been more frightened in all my life. I had my family here.

"The last thing they want to be doing is sitting next to a hospital bed like an Alex McKinnon situation.”

6. THE LATE DRAMA

It’s Origin. What else do you expect?

The Blues were forced to defend for the last 45 seconds after a controversial decision saw a penalty blown against NSW’s Trent Hodkinson for a knock-on when he didn’t play at the ball.

Another penalty was awarded right on the siren, giving the Maroons one last shot to escape with the win, but NSW managed to wrap up Billy Slater with the final tackle of the game.

7. PLAYERS DROPPING LIKE FLIES

First it was Cooper Cronk with his broken arm, then Brett Morris popped out his shoulder while scoring for NSW in the first half.

Proving that wingers are tougher than most people give them credit for, Morris popped it back in and played on.

Queensland also had injury scares for Cam Smith (foot) and Billy Slater (shoulder), while Blues skipper Paul Gallen had a shoulder concern.

NSW forward Anthony Watmough could be facing an extended stint on the sidelines with a torn bicep.

8. WHAT’S THE GO WITH DARIUS BOYD?

Have you seen this guy play for Newcastle this year? It wasn’t the same man who was on the field at Suncorp.

Boyd has come under fire this season for his lack of effort for the Knights but pull on the Maroon jersey and it’s a different ball game.

He was great for Queensland, scoring a double and coming within inches of a game-levelling third.

Tate left shaken by Reynolds tackle

Brent Tate has described the tackle that may cost Josh Reynolds his place in the Blues team for Origin II as one of the most frightening moments of his life and called for the NRL to "get serious" about their crackdown on lifting tackles.

Reynolds was placed on report for his tackle on Tate in the 28th minute of New South Wales' courageous 12-8 win in Game One at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

He was subsequently charged with a Grade 2 Dangerous Throw by the NRL Match Committee in the immediate aftermath of an enthralling 100th Origin encounter.

The charge brings with it 325 points – or a three-game ban – but Reynolds can have that reduced to 243 points with an early guilty plea.

His only chance of playing in Origin II at ANZ Stadium on June 18 is to challenge the grading at the judiciary.

NSW back-rower Beau Scott was also charged by the Match Committee but an early guilty plea to his Grade 1 Dangerous Throw charge will see him available for Newcastle's clash with the Warriors on Sunday.

Speaking in the dressing sheds after the game, Tate looked genuinely shaken up by the incident and has urged the NRL to continue with the clamp down before another player is seriously injured.

"I've never been more frightened in all my life," said Tate, whose career has been threatened by serious neck and knee injuries throughout his 14-year NRL career.

"My legs were shaking for 10 minutes after that so it will be interesting to see what the judiciary has to say because if they're serious about trying to stamp these things out... I don't think I've ever been as scared in a rugby league match as that.

"I was frightened; it was scary.

"I was legitimately shaken up; I didn't know where I was.

"At the end of the day we're trying to stamp this type of stuff out of the game.

"I was put in a position where I had absolutely no control of where I was going.

"We can't have it in our game, it's too dangerous, it's got to stop.

"The NRL has got to get serious about it and start cracking down on it because we've already had an unfortunate incident (the severe spinal injury to Knights forward Alex McKinnon) and what are we going to do?

"Are we going to be sitting beside someone else's bed and after the next one we'll crack down on it?"

Maroons forward Corey Parker was near the incident when it happened and although he conceded losing Reynolds would be a big blow to the Blues, said the welfare of his teammate was his primary concern.

"Tatey got twisted and he was pretty rattled when he was on the ground," Parker said.

"He's a good mate of mine and my main concern was to make sure he was OK.

"[Reynolds] is obviously an important part of their side and if he's to miss it through suspension then it's going to hinder them but we've got our own backyard to worry about first."

In addition to their metaphorical wounds, the Maroons were left to nurse a number of serious injury concerns that threatens to derail their quest for a ninth straight Series win.

Halfback Cooper Cronk lasted just 10 minutes before leaving the field with a suspected broken left arm, captain Cameron Smith was severely hampered by a right ankle injury throughout much of the second half and Daly Cherry-Evans suffered a hip injury in the final frantic minute that will also require scans.

Shaken but otherwise OK, Tate knows that the task of defeating a NSW team growing in self-belief on their home turf to square the Series in three weeks' time shapes as one of the Maroons' greatest challenges in recent years.

"They were great tonight, they defended really well," said Tate.

"Jarryd Hayne at the back was exceptional and carried his club form straight into here and they defended really, really well.

"We had plenty of ball down on their line in the second half and they held us out so they're going to be full of confidence, we're going to have to go down to Sydney and it's a tough place to win."
