The pre-season 2026 thread

Regarding sharpe playing wing or centre:

The way the wingers play in and around the ruck to start off sets these days sharpe would just have to make the decision to stay there/roam if he senses an opportunity and momentum or to return to his wing, which i have faith he’d make the right decision most of the time.
He showed more than enough during his stint on the wing to demonstrate that he either finds points himself or will create them even if he's glued to the sideline waiting for ball.

Im not concerned with his ability to inject himself into the game from the wing. In fact, having that threat on either edge means that Best and Gagai have an easier time beating their opposing centre. And that's to say nothing for Brown or Ponga playing inside of them.

We shouldn't fuss over Sharpe's position. We're just lucky to have him in the team

it’d be such a knights thing to do to move players around from their dominant position.
Sharpe is still 21

Hasn't Sharpe played like 3 times the games at halfback and was showing real promise.

I don't get the Sandon is a must in the halves TBH. He played a couple of really good games there and some bloody ordinary ones as well.

Who won the GF last year?
Penrith…

To your (presumed) point though, I thought Broncos looked a lot better in attack when Reynolds went off. It forced Walsh to become more involved and utilise him better.

Having 4 of them in the squad is a good luxury.

Having the 4 of them on the field at once is messy.

And earlier in the season when Mam and Reynolds were out - again it seemed to simplify their attack.

And a large part of Broncos winning was individual excellence from Walsh. Not having 4 playmakers.

No. The “he was a halfback as a junior” thing is massively overstated. He played halfback for the Goannas and has been a fullback since SG Ball. He played about as much “halfback as a junior” as David Klemmer did.

Going in circles here but the best team performances with him at 6 - besides the one against that reserve grade Souths team - were the Manly and Dolphins games, when he was moved to the right, and almost always positioned outside his back rower rather than inside, so sort of playing with two fullbacks either side of the field, with Crossland at lock taking on a lot of ball playing responsibility at 13.

That is a lot of shuffling around to make him work there and I have significant doubts about how effectively the same set up works against the better defensive teams - Dolphins and Manly are okay teams that don’t defend that well. Also have significant concerns about how a middle with two sub 90kg guys in Crossland and Smith holds up against elite packs.

The weird stuff with Brisbane’s attack that they had to figure out as they want on is that certain players engaged defenders and moved the ball very quickly and cleanly (Mam, Walters, Smoothy, Hunt at 9 rather than 6) and certain others could slow them down and gum up the works a bit (Carrigan, Hunt and Reyno as a halves duo). That’s reductive but it’s also reductive to say Walsh hard carried them, if they had Hunt 9 Reynolds 7 Mam 6 Walsh 1 all fit all year it would have been industrial light and magic.

I’m very very convinced that we’ll move the ball better and quicker with Sandon 7, Brown 6, Ponga 1, with a genuine middle forward at 13 who’s only getting involved sometimes rather than heaps. I think Crossland at 9 is fine. Maybe we’ll see that configuration in first grade and it’ll suck and I’ll look dumb, who knows.

I meant in first grade, didn't he play in the halves for like 15 games?

Sharpes played what 10-15 games at five eight, in a disjointed team. I’m sure he’d improve lol. I remember ppl wondering if Strange was a five eight and he should move to the centres, because he lacked any ball playing, or kicking aswell - had a breakout season and was among the best five eights.

Sandon is the obvious choice in the halves though. But I would have been interested to see how Sharpe developed there. I thought he was getting better towards the back end of his season.

Telegraph had the first batch of players starting training today but the Newcastle Herald says tomorrow. Should be getting some photos soon either way.

Players outside the top 30 & development list we've heard will be there so far:
Logan Aoake (wing/centre)
Aidan Gow (wing)
Diesel Hagan (hooker)
Sosaia Latu (wing)
Toby Winter (fullback/centre)

They'll only be doing fitness tests today, but with Crossland and Brown both getting some time off now, any skills sessions will have to be done with Ponga, Gamble, Smith, Sharpe and Arthur in the spine.
I don't know what halves we have for reserve grade - maybe Mitch Henderson - I honestly can't think of anyone else since we released Loza, Sutton, Hastings, Williams, Pryce, Linnance and Sully Hoad.
POS might have given a train and trial to some halves - probably has in fact.

There is some conjecture around what we think Crossland’s best position is. I personally think 9 is best as it allows us to have a bigger body playing 13, which would help with our go forward. This should create more time and space for our spine players. This would also mean Sandon is the halfback (im taking some liberties on what I think our line up will be)

Crossland does seem somewhat limited in what he offers from 9 though. His vision is poor and he doesn’t have the subtleties to manipulate the defence. Also he isn’t a threat to run from dummy half. All these he can improve if he is allowed to concentrate on 9 as his position and he gets the right coaching

What he does really well is defend, set the line speed and he works really hard

I’d like to know what dummy half coaching has he been getting under the previous regime. Was Buderus helping him out for example and if so to what extent?

As Buderus is now an assistant coach, im wondering how much Crossland can improve his game in the off season and during the season

Im just trying to set my expectation level for improvement in Crossland as our 9

He’s doing a decent job as the 9 for NZ. Let’s all agree he’s not the greatest 9 but he can do a job. And for the team as it stands next year that’s where he will help the team the most. I still think as the year rolls on there could be a player to play 20 - 30mins of 9 off the bench.

I've always thought the only unforgivable sin for hookers is being a ball hog.
Playing long minutes is underrated.
Being a great defender is underrated.
Dummy half runs are overrated.
A good passing game both ways is pretty important.
Vision is nice to have, but you only really need it if your halves aren't that good.

Crossland - not a ballhog - plays big minutes - defends very well - not great at running from dummy half, but Bedsy stopped running from dummy half for his last few years so he could last for 80 minutes, and he was still one of the best - Crossland has a pretty good passing game, both sides - his vision is not good, but if the half were making great calls, it wouldn't need to be.

In short, a lot of people rate hookers on their vision and running game - which are nice skills to have - everyone wants a Harry Grant - but not core skills for a hooker - passing, tackling and playing long minutes are core skills. If we had 2 quality halves, Crossland would be all we need - a workhorse who delivers the ball when he is supposed to.

Hi everyone, seen there has been some chatter around Taj Annan and his development in League with the deal running through to 2027. From what I have heard and the rumours going around in Newcastle is that Taj has returned to Rugby Union and has joined pre-season with Australian Super Rugby side the Western Force (Perth). He had offers from a couple of Aussie union sides and has settled at the Perth team. Im not sure if the Western Force paid a release fee for him or if Annan simply asked for a release and then signed with the Force.
