"Look mate, your playing **** I am going to have to let you go"

"Mate, i was talking to Burro and he said we Signed you to replace BK, Now BK Made the NSW and Australian side while he was here. You haven't, Actually all you've done is Grown A Beard, Shaved All It Off To Look Like BK. . .Then Grew It Back Again So You Didn't Have To Play Like BK".

At first I despised the fact that Brian Smith was coming to Newcastle. I however maintained that he got the Eels to many Final Series. We had a **** season last year, but fair enough seeming that it was not yet Brian's player roster. He did a player cleanout and signed some promising players. 2008 was a year in which I held much interest as Brian now needed results. I am very pleased with what he has done and the results are starting to show.

However there are three main problems with him. Firstly he plays too many mind games with the players and this is not good. I hate how he names the team on Tuesday and by the game day it has changed dramatically. Fair enough if it is due to injury but most of the time he is playing mind games.

Secondly I hate how he does not let players sucjh as Mullen and Durea to play their natural game. He only gives Gidley a free roaming pass to do as he likes, but keeps Mullen and Durea on a leash making sure they are playing to the game plan even if it isn't working. And please tell me what he is doing with Luke Walsh. Quality player and he is just going to let him go, not even putting him in first grade when the opportunity arises.

Finally, Smith is a not a good coach that brings the players together but separates them. I am a mad Knights fan, only 17 and go to many games with my uncle who knows the training staff and thus I get to go in the rooms after a game. Back in the Hagan days, I would go in, my uncle would get a beer, all the players would have a beer and would be sitting around together after a win or lose. It was a great atmosphere and mood. Now when I go in, there is no beer, all the players go warm down, and when they come back Smith has generally left already. FFS the coach should be the last one out of the rooms win or lose. HE need to get the team to come together, not have them in their own small groups.

It will be interesting to see if Smith is still at the club in 2010, but I do think he has done a good job so far.

I think Smith will only be worth our club for about 2 more years. We CANNOT afford to let him get comfortable, because a new change every now and then is what the Knights will need.

I'm not saying I dislike him, but he cant hang around for 30 years like Parramatta kept him for either.

You would assume he would have spoken to the players about it though. I mean it's not like he called Sau on game day telling him he's playing. He had it planned from the beginning.

What the hell is with the shiny red boots do you think you are Dodrothy in the Wizard of Oz or something?

39 out of 100 players polled said that he was the worst coach to play under :(
How does that work though. None of the players polled would have played under say 4 coaches. They can't compare a coach with another that they haven't played under.
The stat isn't reliable or valid - only 100 players.

However I did manage to get a 'Yeah Smith!' out on friday night against the Panthers after the game. He did hear me :)

I know it's not wise to judge a book by its' cover but I could not help notice how tiny Smithy is. I walked by him the other week at EAS and was quite shocked. He hardly looked the type of coach that would inspire the troops. Newcastle have not usually fared well under 'tacticians'. Our best years were under Mal Reilly and his inspirational persona and coaching style..a real leader that players want to play for. A guy that had been there, done that, (or won that). He was the perfect coach for us and as it stands today we do not have another like him.

Wtf does size have to do with coaching ?

Size matters little on the field let alone of it with coaching staff and what not, look at Preston Campbell.
