An intriguing match-up looms between what is surprisingly a pair of unbeaten sides. Widely expected to be among the also-rans, both Scotland and Italy look like providing more than just nuisance value as the tournament progresses.

After a well-publicised upset over the heavily-fancied English in a pre-tournament trial, Italy were impressive in a dominant win over Wales as their NRL contingent – including the Minichiello brothers Anthony and Mark, Roosters back rower Aiden Guerra, Tigers back James Tedesco and Newcastle winger Josh Mantellato – ran amok.

Scotland – a team with fewer NRL players than almost any other side in the tournament – were expected to fold to a strong Tongan side that contains plenty of top-line talent.

But in a gripping match in which Scotland ran out to a big 20-4 lead only to find themselves behind late in the match, the Bravehearts were able to find a match-winning try through fullback Matt Russell.

That win came despite Scotland scoring fewer tries: Tonga converted just two of five tries, but Scottish captain Danny Brough was flawless with his four conversions and landed one from two in his penalty goal attempts.

Scotland also lost the yardage battle badly, making just 990 metres against 1436 by Tonga – a stat they will need to address against the Azzurri.

Italy were dominant in all the key areas in their six-tries-to-three win, notching nine line breaks against just one from Wales, with three breaks and two tries to Guerra, playing in the centres.

Only one team from the three in Group C will progress, making every match vital. Tonga now face an uphill battle, but the winner of this match will give themselves a huge chance to move into the quarter finals to face the Group B winners, likely to be New Zealand.

Watch Out Scotland

Premiership-winning back rower Aiden Guerra didn’t look at all out of place in the centres (he also scored a try in his only start in the centres for the Roosters this year), notching three line breaks, two tries, 121 metres and an unbelievable 11 tackle breaks!

Italy’s front row combination was also devastating: former Tiger and Titan and current St Helens forward Anthony Laffranchi made 124 metres from 17 runs.

Canberra prop Paul Vaughan was even more damaging, with 141 metres from just 16 runs with three tackle breaks.

Watch Out Italy

They’ve already caused one upset and now the Bravehearts will be looking for another.

As mentioned above they’ll need to find some more metres if they’re to triumph over Italy and two key men will be powerful Cowboys centre Kane Linnett (124 metres and three tackle breaks against Tonga) and Titans prop Luke Douglas (124 metres and 42 tackles).

Skipper and seasoned Super League campaigner Danny Brough was the 2013 Man of Steel, and his steady nerves were vital in guiding his side to an upset over Tonga.

Key Match-Up

Anthony Minichiello v Matt Russell. The Azzurri skipper (91 metres and one try against Wales) is one of the most experienced players in the tournament from any team and will be a reliable presence at the back.

Scotland’s not-so-secret weapon could be livewire fullback Matt Russell, whose two tries and eight tackle breaks were crucial in the win over Tonga.

The young local product would likely be playing for England if Sam Tomkins wasn’t around and provides some serious X-factor for the Bravehearts.

They may not come together in the middle much but their respective contributions, particularly on kick returns, will be crucial in deciding their team’s fortunes.

The Way We See It

The Bravehearts have already shown that NRL experience won’t necessarily decide every game but they won’t be able to catch Italy off guard. The Azzurri were strong against Wales and while Scotland will put up a stern fight, they may not have the firepower to go back to back. Italy by six.

Tough game to predict a winner can't go past Italy's star side but you also can't go past Scotland who had a never say die attitude and held on last week against Tonga.... I reckon Italy might just get over the Scots in this one
 
No mention of the Snowden factor.
Kade will run 200 metres against these guys.
 
Can't wait to see Snowden again and hopefully Mantellato with another MOTM ;) performance, really exited for this one.
 
Forwards were great in last game and snowden can only improve that. It's cold and rainy here in Carlisle so I reckon it will be a wet slippery game tomorrow at Workington.
Does anyone know how the pools are selected? Why is Ireland in A ?
 
He nearly took a Scot's head off the second he came on the field lol but he's playing well, definitely has added some weight but still he's making metres and looking dangerous with every touch.

Scotland did well to get their lead but I think Italy will win this in the second half
 
30 all draw. Good game. Snowden injured in the last few seconds :/ Looked like he almost got knocked out in a tackle but limped off..
 
Scotland, Italy in 30-30 draw at World Cup

Ben Hellewell's second try gave Scotland a creditable draw against Italy in their Rugby League World Cup encounter at Derwent Park.

Five days earlier, the Scots had edged out Tonga 26-24 in Workington and on Sunday they were given another stern test of their credentials by Group C rivals Italy, who defeated Wales in their opening match of the tournament.

The Danny Brough-inspired Bravehearts appeared to be on course for another victory after taking a 14-0 lead but Italy came roaring back.

Steve McCormack's men kept their noses in front up until the hour mark in front of a 7,280 pro-Scotland crowd, but they looked increasingly jaded in the second half and Italy took advantage to move into a 30-26 lead.

But the Azzurri were hit on the break and Hellewell grounded in the right corner to earn Scotland a deserved point that could prove crucial to their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.

In contrast to the second half, scoring chances were few and far between in a cagey opening stanza and perhaps sensing that opportunities would be at a premium, Brough opted to take the two points on offer after a late challenge on Scotland's Penrith-bound halfback Peter Wallace.

He need not have worried as two tries in the space of five minutes put McCormack's men firmly in the ascendancy.

First, Matthew Russell, Scotland's two-try hero on Tuesday night, slipped out of a tackle before crashing over and although there was uncertainty over whether he had grounded the ball, the fullback was given the benefit of the doubt by the video referee.

There was an element of fortune in Scotland's second try as Brough's grubber wrong-footed Italy wing Josh Mantellato, which allowed Kane Linnett to scoop up the loose ball and cross in the left corner.

The influential Brough converted both tries to give the Bravehearts a 14-0 lead, but Italy fought back like they did against Wales.

Cameron Ciraldo and Raymond Nasso grabbed tries, with Newcastle Knights' Mantellato adding his second conversion to cut the deficit to 14-12 at halftime.

After a see-sawing second half, Italy looked the stronger team and they took the lead for the first time when captain Anthony Minichiello dived over on the right.

Scotland refused to give in and Hellewell took advantage of an Azurri defence that were at sixes and sevens.

But Brough missed his first conversion of the game and at 30-30 with 10 minutes remaining, a grandstand finish was assured.

The Huddersfield five-eighth then failed with a drop goal attempt in the final 90 seconds, while Ryan Ghietti did likewise at the other end as the spoils were shared.

Any news on Snowden? I don't know if it was a head knock or a leg injury, he was both limping and looked KO'd.. I hope he's okay, can't believe it happened in the final seconds after all the hard work he did.

Italy sure rushed their field goal attempt, still 30 odd seconds and a few tackles left but Mantellato got pressured and instead of taking the tackle and re-setting they go for a shank. Good game overall.

Found out Snowden's injury was a minor knee injury, nothing serious. I wouldn't be sad if he sits out the next game, he's finished his suspension now so from a Knights perspective I wouldn't want him to risk doing further damage.
