Salvaging 2021 - options before 1st August deadline that might lift our stocks?

I know there is limited scope, with the only faint hope that seems to be in the background re Clifford getting released early...just interested in whether there is anything else out there that others think are options we have as a trade or potential pick up that can improve our squad before the 1st August deadline?

Dont bother. There is no saving 2021 unless the players can get themselves to bother wanting to compete.

OB should tell them I dont care if you win, but if I cant see every player busting their butt to compete on every play you will be in reserve grade the following week.

Competing hard for everything is the bare minimum standard.

Don't think the Cows will let Clifford go in case of injury to Hampton, Drinks etc. Same as Penrith and Burton depth to cover injury. Can't see any outside backs available that would improve this year ~ just have to be happy with 12th or so.

Clifford being released now could be in jeopardy. Hampton may have done a pec injury yesterday and waiting on results.

Last year Adam was very smart in finding short term replacements just to try and get through the year. McCullough & Greeny were smart moves, shame about the injuries.

This year things are complicated by the fact that we’re specifically holding that spot for a guy who’s going to stay here for a couple seasons after that at least. If we were to pull the trigger on someone, and then the Cowboys decide they are ready to release him after all, what do we do then?

Anyway, I think Nathan Cleary would really help. Anyone got some kind of mind control device?

Yeah even if the Cows get Dearden up early, that leaves them with Drinks, Hampton, Dearden & Clifford - four halves options, so one injury cover player per spot. My understanding is that Asi can also play there but is more of a centre. So it’s not a lot of options even if they do get Dearden this year, which I’m sure they want to, so they may not release Clifford this year anyway. They’ve only got a 28 man top 30 atm so no pressure at all to release anyone, and honestly it’s not a great idea for them. I’m sure CBM will tell me if any of this is incorrect, I obviously don’t follow the Cowboys as closely as my own club.

Meanwhile we’ve got Pearce, Green, Mann, Crossland - four players where a spot in the halves is viewed as their main position - and also Hoy, Sasagi & Watson, who don’t have 6 or 7 as their main position (Baz said this week that the club has decided Simi is a centre) but have a bit of experience playing there.

So we’ve actually got way more depth, it’s just that it’s really starting to look like the gap between Pearce and our next best option is fairly huge. I kind of thought from the beginning our best shot to get Clifford out early was a player swap, but that relies on one of our guys being keen to uproot their life and go to Townsville for a shot at first grade up there. Can’t just trade guys whether they want to go or not like in American sports...

We have signed the kid from Manly who was one of the best in SG Ball this year and is the same age Ponga was when we got him.
He was playing 5/8 for Manly in there close Semi final loss in under 19s last week and is expected to play reserves for us this week.
I expect him to get our last development spot if he goes OK in the next few weeks, which means we could pick him for firstgrade from round 11.
I'd be surprised if he wasn't training with firstgrade right now. Krystian Mapapalangi - plays fullback, centre and 5/8 and is apparently a star at touch as well.

Marsters just got released from the Cows. Gee hasn't he turned to rubbish.

Random name out there John Asiata at the Bronco's was a champion at the Cows can't make the Bronco's 17, can play anywhere in the forwards has even filled in, in the halves very dynamic, would be a great for us if Donkeys wanted to free up some cap.

Cowboys clearing up cap space to bring Shibasaki and Tuala back to Townsvile. Love it.

Asiata can throw a nice pass but I’m not sure I’d use the word “dynamic”...

Who cares about salvaging the season...the only ones that can do that is the players themselves.

Bringing in someone isn't going to do anything. Also what is the obsession with clifford, he really isn't anything special.

Let the team continue to play like they are, then let AOB drop the whole lot of them or shop them around and promote someone that has the heart to compete like Brodie Jones.

Pride of the hunter, more like embarrassment of the hunter.

The obsession with Clifford is that he’s going to be the five-eighth next year, so if we get him in earlier than that it gives more time to bed him in before then. He was also given permission to negotiate and we pursued him on the understanding he’d be released for 2021 before the Nth Qld Cowards backflipped on that...

I don't see it happening this year, especially now that he is starting this week as cowboys have their injuries.
