Round 22: Knights v Titans @ Skilled Stadium

Hopefully Kidley plays but I'm confident about victory without him I want that Rankin kid to play to he'll probably be out of his depth and struggle when the big boys get hold of him

KNIGHTS V TITANS PREVIEW

The Knights head north on Monday night to continue their push for a semi-final spot at Skilled Park. After dismantling the hapless Eels last Monday night, the Titans will be a much tougher ask, with the possibility of halfback Scott Prince returning from a broken arm.

“They’re a really gutsy team. They’ve played some good footy and as I reminded the boys, a few weeks ago they went to Sydney and played the Roosters and the Roosters had a pretty fair team out, certainly all their gun players and the Titans had a great win there and that was away from home. I think they’ve got the second or third best home record in the league this year and they just had two key players in Minichiello and Friend come back into their team and maybe Prince as well so we know we’re in for a tough game. We had a tough game against them down here and it was one of the highlights of our season so far and we only won by two on home ground so we know what we’re in for,” coach Brian Smith said today.

The Knights will be looking for their third successive victory – something foreign to Smith in his time as Knights’ coach.

“Any three wins in a row would be sensational because we haven’t done that since I’ve been here at the Knights and that for obvious reasons would help with confidence, but I think the biggest games of the season lie in front of us. We’ve done some good things and I think we’ve got a little bit of credibility back and I think the people of Newcastle are proud of their footy team again, but there’s a whole heap of bigger challenges that lie in front of us over the concluding weeks of the season and it’s just great to be a part of it again. It’s what players play for, coaches coach for and the fans love it when your teams in the race for the playoffs.”

A key aspect of the Knights run to the finals is fullback Kurt Gidley. After being in the thick of the action over the course of the season, Smith gave Gidley the week off training to freshen up, before tackling the Titans on Monday night.

“Kurt’s had a torrid year. He’s done a lot of work and he’s still playing well, but we don’t want him to get to where he falls off the perch and starts to pick up niggling injuries. He’s got a bit of a cork on his thigh there from last weekend’s game but apart from that his body is in pretty good shape. Bedsy, Simmo, Doogs and obviously Crossy’s had way more time off than he’d have liked, but all of those senior boys are going to go into these last half dozen games with no worries.”

Steve Simpson made a successful return from injury last week and Smith says his performance has set the standard for players also returning in the next few weeks.

“I spoke about Simmo’s performance last week after the game, but the more I’ve watched it during the course of the week, it’s really set a benchmark for those guys that are returning for us over the next few weeks to see if they can get themselves back anywhere near that level of performance will be a massive boost and I’ve got a feeling Matty Hilder’s set for one of those this week. I had a bit of fun with him this morning and told him before training that we’d changed our minds and we weren’t going to play him. He didn’t see the funny side of it at all.”

Meanwhile, Fijian flyer Akuila Uate was not at training yesterday and a decision on whether he will take his place in the side on Monday night will be determined when he returns from Fiji where he has been on compassionate leave.

“At this stage, he’s a bit doubtful – I think we’d need to see – it’s been two flights in a few days and obviously an emotional happening there for him to deal with. We’ll just see how he comes up tomorrow. We haven’t got a fixed mind on that at this stage,” Smith said.

The match will be shown on Fox Sports 2 from 7pm on Monday night.

today's paper

Knights coach will resist the temptation to start with an extra forward tomorrow night against the Gold Coast by pitching halfback Scott Dureau into the starting line-up rather than using him off the bench.

Fullback Kurt Gidley has a cork but is a definite starter.

I dont know why Smith just doesn't start Dureau with Mullen, the more they play together, the better they will get.
And if you ever read this Smith, for gods sake, use Patto as kicker, its pretty bloody obvious he is a lot better than Gidley injured or otherwise.

Good to see Dureau starting the game now, his combination with Mullen and their direction together is second to none. Hopefully the forwards set the platform for us.

well him starting will give us plenty of attacking options right from the start

lets put a pile of points on and get above the sts in 6th spot :)

Smith preparing to tackle Titans' star duo - Knights feel Prince, and Bailey will play
BY BRETT KEEBLE

CALL it paranoia, or just covering all contingencies, but Newcastle coach Brian Smith has planned for Gold Coast co-captains Scott Prince and Luke Bailey to play against the Knights at Skilled Park tonight.

Prince (arm) and Bailey (foot) are supposedly nursing season-ending injuries, but Smith's intelligence network has presented him with reliable information that both will return tonight as the desperate Titans try to keep their second season alive.

Gold Coast have lost three in a row and six of their past seven but are on 22 points, the same as Newcastle, and Smith is certain Titans coach John Cartwright will play his trump cards if they are available.

Smith had similar information about Parramatta's Feleti Mateo coming back early from a knee injury last Monday, despite Eels coach Michael Hagan's comments to the contrary in the lead-up, and Mateo's presence proved Smith's reconnaissance was spot-on.

Prince is scheduled for a 12.45pm X-ray today on his left forearm, which he broke in Origin III six weeks ago, and Smith believed Bailey was well ahead of schedule in his recovery from ankle surgery seven weeks ago.

Smith said their return would mean the Titans would be close to full strength against a Newcastle side who, despite comprehensive back-to-back wins over Souths and Parramatta, were still missing NRL regulars Ben Cross, Wes Naiqama, Jesse Royal and Chris Bailey.

"If Luke Bailey and Scott Prince both play, and that's what we're expecting is going to happen, then we're the ones without half a dozen players and they're missing virtually no one," Smith said last night.

"Bailey has been training regularly in the last couple of weeks. I don't know whether they're going to play him or not, but they've been trying to get him ready for it, and if Prince is cleared then he should be there somewhere as well."

Even if Bailey and Prince do not play, the Titans will be boosted by the return of influential forwards Mark Minichiello (ankle) and Nathan Friend (shoulder). Both have been sidelined with injuries for several weeks but were given a final all-clear at training yesterday.

Winger Aku Uate and prop Dan Tolar trained with the Knights yesterday morning before the team flew to the Gold Coast, but they have had disrupted preparations and Smith will decide today whether they play.

Uate flew home to Fiji last week to attend his grandmother's funeral and only returned on Saturday, and Tolar has been hampered by a neck injury. Cooper Vuna and Danny Wicks, who travelled in a 20-man squad, are on stand-by.

"Aku scrubbed up OK at training today, so we'll make a decision on that tomorrow," Smith said last night.

"Dan Tolar was able to train today with no worries but we still want to see how his neck reacts to that."

Smith said dynamic fullback Kurt Gidley, who returned to training on Saturday after four days off to rest a corked thigh and general wear and tear, was a certain starter.

[PI9016] Central Newcastle's NSW Cup finals hopes were all but extinguished when they suffered a 38-18 loss to leaders Wentworthville at Ringrose Park yesterday.

The Knights (10 points) are 10th in the 12-team NSW Cup, four points behind eighth-placed Auckland Vulcans (14) with four rounds remaining.

we should prepare for the circumstances of prince playing and if he doesn't play in the end, we should be okay anyway.

Does anyone think we can win by 36+ to get ahead of the Raiders and into 6th place? I know I'd rather the Knights be facing Roosters or Cronulla in the 1st week of finals rather than Melbourne or Manly

i doubt we will win by that much but it is possible that we can end up sixth after beating canberra in round 23
