Knights v Raiders: Schick Preview

Schick Hydro Preview: Newcastle Knights v Canberra Raiders
McDonald Jones Stadium
Sunday, 2pm

The representative break probably came at a good time for both of these clubs after deeply disappointing Round 9 efforts.

The Knights will be hoping the likes of the Saifiti brothers (Fiji), Mata'utias (Samoa), Nathan Ross (City Origin) and Sam Stone (Junior Kangaroos) will be bringing a bounce in their step back from their respective weeks away on rep duty while the rest of the squad got a chance to rest some niggles.

They will be looking to bounce back from a diabolical second half in their big 38-8 loss on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago, in a game they were well and truly in for a long period before falling away badly.

On the teams front, coach Nathan Brown has named close to the same starting 17, though Luke Yates (lock) pushes Josh King back to the reserves. Halfback Trent Hodkinson is also in the reserves this week and may come into contention on game day.

The Raiders had a light load last weekend, with only prop Junior Paulo (Toa Samoa) facing off against clubmates Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead (England) on Saturday.

While their 16-10 away loss to the Dogs doesn't sound that bad on paper, the fact the injury-ravaged Dogs completely shut down a Raiders side that should have run away with it whilst the Green Machine failed to fire a shot in the second half is a massive cause for concern.

Coach Ricky Stuart has called on Sio Soliola to start in the second row with Dunamis Lui to join the bench while Josh Papalii serves a one-game disciplinary suspension.

‌Why Knights can win:

To say the Knights will need to improve on last week's second half is an understatement but the fact they led, away from home, at half-time is at least encouraging.

Their young forward pack will need to match it with Canberra's representative-stacked pack during the early salvos but if they can do that they're a chance.

It will be up to the likes of Daniel Saifiti (148 metres against Gold Coast, 145 metres and a try against Tonga), Sam Stone (tries in last two games) along with older heads like Josh Starling and Anthony Tupou to lift their teammates.

Why Raiders can win:

Surely Canberra are too good a side to put in a repeat effort of what they served up against Canterbury last week and Manly the week before.

Their power-packed right edge went completely missing in those two games (while leaking plenty of tries) after looking like world-beaters for the month prior.

The likes of Joey Leilua (eight missed tackles, two errors, 72 metres), Jordan Rapana (six misses, two errors, 54 metres) and Blake Austin (five missed tackles, no assists) will be stinging after what they dished up against the Dogs and out to remind everyone why they were considered the most threatening edge in the competition as recently as a month ago.

The history: Played 45; Knights 18, Raiders 25; Drawn 2.

In their past seven meetings the Knights only have one win over Canberra, plus a 90-minute draw last year. Canberra's recent record at McDonald Jones isn't bad either, with three wins from their past five visits to go with one loss and that draw.

What are the odds:

Six times the money has gone on Canberra according to Sportsbet and the Raiders have been included in a stack of multis over the round.

Canberra 13+ is the most popular winning margin and 72 per cent of the bets are with the Green Machine at the line where they're conceding the points start.

NRL.com predicts:

We're not completely writing the Knights off but the Raiders should have too many points in them to go down here. Canberra by at least two converted tries.

Daniel Saifiti's confidence boost

Thu 11th May, 01:01PM

As the nib Newcastle Knights prepare for Sunday's Round 10 match against the Canberra Raiders, young forward Daniel Saifiti returns to Club land full of confidence after representing Fiji in the Pacific Test.

Saifiti admits he’ll have to put in a strong performance against a tenth-placed Raiders outfit at McDonald Jones Stadium.

“We played Canberra in the trials so I got a bit of insight into how they play,” said the 21-year-old.

“We played them twice last year and they’re definitely a big pack.

“They are full of representative forwards and I’m just going to put my best foot forward.”

Saifiti’s confidence has been boosted following a glowing wrap from legend of the game and assistant coach of the Fiji team, Petero Civoniceva.

“He is my idol and it’s unreal the words he said but I’m not going to let that affect me at all, I need to get on with the way I’ve been playing,” explained the Knights forward.

“Definitely gives me confidence but at the same time I’m just going to keep doing my thing and hopefully help Newcastle out too.

“I picked the brain of Petero Civoniceva, I was speaking to him a fair bit about what I need to do with my game and hopefully I can implement that into my game in Newcastle.”

Reflecting on his week representing his country, Saifiti admits it’s been a highlight.

“It is my third year in a row, I love getting amongst the boys and we’re all just looking forward to world cup,” Saifiti smiled.

“Everyone celebrates our culture during the week and it makes everything so special for us and when it comes to game day we are there for each other.

“I love playing for my culture, my family and my heritage.”

Footy action is back at McDonald Jones Stadium this Sunday when the Knights take on the Raiders, NYC kick-off at 11.45am before NRL at 2pm.

Knights focus on Raiders

nib Newcastle Knights coach Nathan Brown maintains they’ll have to make the most of their home ground advantage against the Canberra Raiders this Sunday.

As one of the top try scorers for the season, Brown admits they’ll need to be wary of Canberra despite them sitting tenth on the ladder.

“They had a great year last year,” said Brown.

“If you look at their performances this year they’ve had those two golden point losses, where-as they were winning those games last year.

“A side like them is aiming at the pointy end of the table.”

The Knights coach knows the Raiders are a quality outfit.

“They put their squad together over a three or four-year period and I’m sure we can all agree that they’re a squad at their best,” commented Brown.

“It will be a big challenge but they have a couple of injuries, a touch unlucky not to play in last year’s grand final.”

Brown said it’s been unfortunate they’ve also been forced to deal with several player injuries.

“We definitely came into the season very confident Dylan Pythian was going to be our fullback and we were very confident Rory (Kostjasyn) was going to be our hooker, five-eighth cover,” explained Brown.

“Jamie (Buhrer) our back row and hooker... so with the loss of those blokes to injury it has made things a little bit different."

While Buhrer is on schedule to return in Round 14, Kostjasyn continues to recover from a throat injury.

“The general thought with Rory is it is more likely that he won’t play than he will play," Brown said.

“We couldn’t be 100 per cent sure but we certainly want to give him every opportunity to play because he’s had such a great influence even though he hasn’t even play one game."

The Knights coach said time and performance will determine any changes in the halves after naming Jaelen Feeney and Brock Lamb there this weekend.

“We have looked at one or two things and the form of Jaelen and Brock will probably play a part,” Brown said.

“The last thing you want to do is change our young halves after one performance.

“Jaelen has earned the right to have a couple of goes but I think we’ll be a little clearer in another two or three games, what our best side will be.

“If one of our halves wasn’t fit, Hokko (Trent Hodkinson) would obviously come in, his game in reserve grade was quite good.”

With Raiders forward Josh Papalii missing from the side, Brown believes it will have some impact on their opponent’s game.

“Anytime a side loses a test or origin Queensland player it is going to make their side not as good and that’s why Josh Papalii is such a good player,” said Brown.

“They have moved Iosia Soliola there and he’s been outstanding and to get Joe (Tapine), we all know what a wonderful player Joe is.

“Any time a side loses a player of that quality, it certainly has some effect but with the depth in their squad and the talent I’m sure they will be comfortable covering it.”

The Knights coach maintains it will be a great occasion this weekend at McDonald Jones Stadium.

“It is a big day with the Indigenous Round for all 16 clubs,” added Brown.

“Newcastle, we’ve got over 22,000 Indigenous people that live in the area.

“We had two players that designed the jumper and we’re one of the only clubs or the only club with the Indigenous players playing on the day who designed the jumper.

“It is about their families and where they’re from which is important and its Mother’s Day as well so I think everyone would like to do well for their mums.”

Jacob Saifiti confident of Raiders upset

Fri 12th May, 04:35PM

The nib Newcastle Knights may have thrashed the Canberra Raiders in their pre-season trial, but big forward Jacob Saifiti says it’s a new game and a new day.

Having said that, the 21-year-old belives the Knights have every chance of notching up a win.

“We go into every game believing we can win.

“It is no different this week, we believe when we go out this weekend we can upset Canberra.”

Saifiti is well aware that the match will have to be won through the middle.

“Bring it through the middle, that is where they’re the strongest and if we do that we’ll lessen the impact of their outside backs,” Saifiti explained.

“If we get them through the middle, it will go a long way to winning the game.”

The Knights forward said they’ll have to keep a close eye on some of the danger men.

“(Junior) Paulo and (Shannon) Boyd are a chance of coming back so those two,” said Saifiti.

“Also look out for (Jordan) Rapana and (Joey) Leilua, we have to do a big job on them stopping the offloads and their runs so those four are the main targets.”

Meanwhile Saifiti admits his time with the Fijian team at the Pacific Tests in Campbelltown last week saw him gain a boost of confidence going forward.

“It is always good with the Fijian boys and with the players coming in such as Kane Evans, you learn a lot from them.

“Especially Petero Civoniceva, you try and absorb it from him and bring it back here to Newcastle.

“He was our idol growing up so to read what he said about us was pretty special and I’ll hold that close to me.”

Can you post a link to the story mate?

It was from one of the quoted stories above.

Fitzgibbon will be snapped in half by their pack. Tomorrow is going to be very depressing IMO.

Not at all....
Fitzy may have been a soft guy 12mths ago but his turned into one big aggressive agaile forward.
Just needs to be given a month in firsts to find his feet.

His a massive unit now.. at least 6'3 110kg and hits very very hard.
Still thick between the ears though imo.
