Rookie Review: Brock Lamb

While 2017 didn't see anywhere near as many players make their NRL debut as in 2016, there were still a number of rookies in the Club's ranks.

Brock Lamb was the Club’s standout rookie in 2017, as he played 21 matches in the top grade and walked away with the Rookie of the Year Award at the Club’s Danny Buderus Medal.

While Lamb faced some challenges in the early part of the season as he learned to adapt to the pace and power of the NRL, by the latter stages of the season he was in brilliant form.

There was no doubt he was at the fore in each game as the team chalked up three consecutive wins late in the season.

It was an unfortunate end to the season for the 20-year-old though, as he picked up a knee injury that prevented him from playing the final two matches.

The positive news was that it wasn’t a long-term injury, and Lamb will be ready to go when the 2018 pre-season commences on November 1.

In 2018 he will be facing increased competition for a first-grade spot, with Connor Watson coming to the Club and Trent Hodkinson and Jack Cogger also aiming to play in the halves.

Lamb loves a challenge though, as he proved time and again in 2017.

STATS

. 25 games
. 21 goals
. 5 tries
. 10 try assists
. 53 metres per game
. 17 tackles per game
. 87 per cent tackle accuracy

NOTE: Players are classified as a rookie in their debut year and the subsequent two seasons.

Once a player plays his fourth NRL premiership match (and/or English Super League match), he is no longer classified as a rookie.

As Lamb had only played three NRL matches coming into 2017, this season he was still considered a rookie.

Being a young half in a well beaten side every week would have killed off the career of 9 out of 10 really talented young guys.
Hodko was a SOO veteran and couldn't hack it in the same circumstances.

I was massively impressed with Brock this year. Very impressive young man, could be a real star for us.

I'm very impressed with Lamb and how he has come along this year. He has learned some lessons and really shined towards the end of the year. I'd rather Lamb partner Watson next year and see how they can develop together, vs bring in maloney or even cronk.

Our plan is for the long term betterment of the club and getting Cronk for a year would not be worth while. He is not going to win us the comp next year, and then he is gone. Maloney is a good player, but I on't think he would be coming to Newcastle for anything but the money. Lamb is home grown, and a player I can really see maturing in to a very handy half, once he gets a bit more confidence he can run the show. And next year not having to be the main and pretty much sole play maker/kicker will take some pressure off also.

I'm with you Kurriboy. Lamb and Watson can become a real combination and with big centres outside them and better forwards such as Lillyman, Guerra etc., the year ahead looks much brighter.

I would prefer Hodko over Maloney in current form. The guy is a liability in defence, gives away a million penalties and that's about it.

Hopefully he either stays at the Sharks or some other dumb club does us a favour like the Warriors/Blair situation.

Paying close to 1 million scares me, but I reckon he'd come back good after coming fresh from a break & ripping into pre-season at a new club. He is a multiple premiership winner. Hokko can't run or kick, we all saw how bad his defence had become when he literally couldn't move his legs at times, he's done, only a matter of time before he finds a deal in England & Browny lets him go.
