Newcastle Knights playmaker Trent Hodkinson escorts terminally ill girl Hannah to her school formal

TRENT Hodkinson, take a bow.

The Newcastle Knights playmaker may not have had the greatest season, having been dropped from first grade for a large part of the year, but he has easily won the feel-good story of 2017.

On Wednesday night, Hodkinson escorted Hannah, a massive Knights fan, to her school formal.

Her school, Kurri Kurri High, brought the formal forward from the end of the year to the middle of July because Hannah has terminal Ewing sarcoma — a cancer found in the bones or soft tissue.

Hannah and Trent Hodkinson attend her formal.

The NRL star rode in the back seat with Hannah on the way to the formal, held her hand as she walked in and even cut a cake at the event in front of everyone else in her year.

Scandal is never too far from rugby league, so it’s worth noting the great things the code does.

As we say, Trent, take a bow.

That is why her school bringing the formal forward and Trent taking her to it was such a great thing.

The Newcastle Knights are saddened by the loss of Hannah Rye this week.

The Club has offered support to Hannah's family and will continue to do so.

The Club will also continue to respect the family's privacy at this difficult time.

Trent Hodkinson and the team will be wearing black armbands as a mark of respect when the Knights take on the Canberra Raiders this Friday night.

Knights star Trent Hodkinson pays tribute to Hannah Rye who tragically died from cancer

NEWCASTLE Knights star Trent Hodkinson took to the field wearing strapping on his arm bearing the words “Hannah” during the clash with the Canberra Raiders on Friday night, in a tribute to the teenage fan who tragically died from cancer this week.

Hodkinson melted hearts last month when he took 15-year-old cancer patient Hannah Rye to her Year 10 formal at Kurri Kurri High School.

A devoted Knights fan, the brave teen lost her two-year battle with Ewing’s sarcoma earlier this week.

Hodkinson had remained tight-lipped all week out of respect to the family, but told The Saturday Telegraph: “I’ve lost a friend.’’

‘It was a tough week, I wanted to go out and play for her,’’ Hodkinson said.

“We all had the armbands on, which was a nice touch from everyone.

“We tried out guts out, so hopefully we did her and her family proud.’’

Newcastle coach Nathan Brown said Hodkinson was ‘’the nicest human being in the game’’, and Hannah’s passing was felt around the club.

“Being a parent myself I can’t imagine what Hannah’s parents are going through,’’ Brown said.

“I don’t think there’s a nicer human being in the game (than Hodkinson), and I hope whenever ‘Hokko’s’ career comes to an end people remember all the great things he’s done, and it works to his advantage.

“He gives a lot of his time up for all the right reasons, he doesn’t do it for the accolades or attention, he does it because he wants to do it.’’

Brown said Hodkinson was such a level-headed and calm character he was known as the Ice Man at former club Canterbury it was difficult to tell how the halfback had coped.
