Official: Knights sign Kalyn Ponga on a 4 year deal

At the Knights he will get 26 games of firstgrade as a fullback if all goes well.
At the Cowboys they would probably play him on the wing in reserve grade (because he will be injury cover for their wingers).
The difference is chalk and cheese. He'd almost be better off sitting out the year than playing a year of wing in reserve grade - or even worse, they might get really mean and play him in under 20s.

You don't think you're a chance at finals next year do you?

Learning the fullback craft from Coote and how to control a game from JT is 10000000% better than anything he would learn at Newcastle next year. He will be fullback in NCY next year to say any different is just pure nonsense.

Better off sitting out the year instead of going to training everyday with JT... You've lost all your marbles now Billy.

If a player wants out and no longer wants to be at their current club very little good ever comes from making them stay.
Our halves could teach him how to tackle unlike JT ;)

Really Mozza? Throwing the only cheap shot u can find? Cool story mate.

Maybe our halves could teach the other 30 odd players in the nrl squad how to tackle to then ay?:fist:

It's not a cheap shot, it's the truth. Mullen is probably the best defensive pivot in the NRL and Hodkinson is up there for the halfbacks aswell. Thurston is a turnstile of Dureau-esqe proportions.

Have to agree . Thurston is right up there for missed tackles.

I laugh ( cringe ) when I read " future Immortal " and Thurston in the same sentence. Bloody good player but no Immortal. Sterling, Stuart, Langer, etc were as good if not better.

It was a cheap shot and a poor one!

When our side missed more tackles then any other in the comp it is highly rich to point out one thing u could find of the cowboys team on tackling.

Maybe Ponga could learn how to be a nrl fullback from Coote?
Who the **** in our club could he learn that skill set?
Potter? pfft please!
Ross? Haha
Mamo? Lololololol

So theoretically Ponga would learn more about the defensive side of the game from 2 sound defenders as opposed to a defensive liability like JT.

Really? This is the best u got?

On this theory what will he learn from the other 32 players in our nrl squad?

Fyi id have Thurston over both our halves combind! Though our side has no one to protect him.......:fist:

This is a pointless discussion.
If the Cowboys release him - good.
If the Cowboys don't release him, fair enough.
Maybe Nick Meaney will get a chance instead, and give Ponga a bit of competition for 2018.

The best I've got? I made a point that he'd learn more defensively from our halves than from Thurston. You then proceeded to spout nonsensically about our NRL squad's defensive capabilities whilst never addressing my initial statement.

Gees mate you Jts brother lol?

I find it funny that we have a truckload of skilled fullbacks coming through the ranks and then we sign ponga on a ridiculous amount of money. Cya guys. I hope meaney really digs his heels and and makes ponga work hard. I really hate guys that get gifted things and don't perform.

I'm thinking more than anything I'd like him to develop physically for another year before he comes there's not much of him. As soon as he gets here we will be playing him 80mins 26 games that a lot for a young bloke both physically and mentally.

Ponga is getting more money than any of our "truckload of skilled fullbacks" because he's more talented than all of them, that's how contracts work. Not sure why you think he's any less deserving of an opportunity than Meaney.

Well I should be earning more then the tradies at work since I do the bulk workload and do it much better. If only it worked like that. Ponga has shown me footwork and able to pass a ball. Not much else. To be worth 3 to 400k at 18 is a bit silly. Anyway I don't work the contracts and paychecks so I'm out.
