Young Knights up for the challenge

A surprise army camp and an intense preseason training schedule has seen the Newcastle Knights' Under 20s squad rise to the challenge.

Knights' NYC Coach Garth Brennan was impressed by the calibre of young men in his squad.

"The preseason has been rather intense but the boys have well and truly stepped up to the challenge," Brennan said.

"The army camp we had was fairly physical and demanding, but their attitudes have been faultless."

Described as being a "tighter unit" than the 2009 sqaud, they have shown all the signs of being a potential threat in the 2010 season.

A stepping stone into the Telstra Premiership, a few of the youth players have been training with the Knights NRL squad and are among those earmarked to potentially make their first grade debut's in 2010.

"Tyrone Roberts has been a real shining light.

"The experience which these players have brought back to the NYC team is certainly rubbing off on the other guys.

"The level of training and their performance has just gone to another level."

Other names to look out for include 2009's NYC player of the year Josh Ailomai, Peter Mata'utia and Zane Tetevano, who have all featured heavily in the first two rounds.

Participating in the Toyota Cup is about more than playing the game, it is about preparing players for life after league, a responsibility which Brennan does not take lightly.

"It's high up on my priorites because the statistics have shown that only a small percentage of them will make a living out of rugby league.

"Setting themselves up for life after football has finished is paramount because they are only a serious injury away from their dreams coming unstuck."

External commitments including study and work provides the players with busy schedules.

Gym sessions have them up with the birds three mornings a week for 6am starts, and training sessions begin after 5pm on four evenings.

Coach Garth Brennan holds a group meeting before NYC training commences.
A win over the Bulldogs in round 1 of the Toyota Cup demonstrated the ability and the unity of this young side.

After an early lead in the second round against the 2009 Toyota Cup winners, the Melbourne Storm got the better of the Knights.

Round 3 of the NYC competition will see the Newcastle Knights take on the Manly Sea Eagles as the curtain raiser this Saturday at Bluetongue Stadium.

The fourth placed Sea Eagles have lost a number of their highly rated 2009 contingent due to the age restriction, along with young gun Kieran Foran who is unlikely to line up for the Under 20s after earning a regular spot in their first grade.

They weren't exactly 'up for the challenge' last week being humiliated and embarrassed in front of their family an friends by a Melbourne side.

This is an as* licking article if ever I've seen one. On the team front, Redman to starting hooker and Cordner off the bench make's it look 10x better. I guess we will see on Saturday!

wouldn't you love to get the chance to motivate them before the game this week?...kick the door in like Hasler apparently did...look them in the eye and growl at them something like..."By christ and sonny jesus you WILL be better this week, otherwise every last ****ing one of you will be looking for a new club...got it?"......

fantastic turnaround in form and effort...makes me wonder what the hell the previous week was all about...
