NRLW Round 8 - Knights V Roosters - Saturday 9th September 1:30pm - McDonald Jones Stadium.

I swear there’s tiny little men in Kasey Badger’s brain throwing darts at a wall, and that’s how she makes her refereeing decisions 😆

We're now in the box seat for the minor premiership which is pretty insane considering how inconsistent we've been. Feels a little disingenuous against the understrength Roosters, they've clearly been the best team all season, but you can only play what's in front of you.

Goal line defence was great once once again.

Play again Thursday makes an interesting decision re resting players.
I say play them all and then they get a long break till the knockout final in Newcastle.

Great to see all the big names - Upton, Clydesdale, both Southwell's all step up in the big game.

Easily the girls’ best performance. Chooks played with so much more intensity for the first 20 minutes but if I was one of their fans I’d officially be very worried now. Aside from their last minute 18-16 win over us last year, which was a weird game where both teams rested a bunch of players so I think you can’t read much into it, they seem to exist in a binary state - either they blow the other team away with early physicality and put on a cricket score, or the other team keeps coming at them and digging their shoulders into tackles, and they get really rattled and lose comfortably. 24-10 loss vs the Eels in the semi last year, 24-14 vs the Raiders in round 2 (very flattering scoreline) and now a 20-4 loss to us.

No second half comebacks, no hard-fought low scoring wins - just dominant wins and bad, frustrating losses.

I know they were missing Millie and Jess Sergis, but we also had a starting prop and a bench prop out, one of the replacements for that prop, and lost a back rower who’d likely be in the 17 each week had she not gone down with a pre-season injury. Injuries are not an excuse - they also have what would be considered by most to be the best hooker, five-eighth and centre in the game, to balance us having the best fullback, back rower, and a very high potential halfback who’s just a notch below the best halves in the game. Our star players lifted and theirs didn’t, and the squad players did their jobs better. They were also way way up on yardage stats etc at half time yet it was them who wilted.

Stats are either very wrong for Predebon, or they were trying to run her fit with little success.
Stats say she was on the field for 54 minutes and only ran 60 metres and made 11 tackles - so she must have been gassed most of the time.
Romaniuk was on the field for 40 and ran 122 and made 24 tackles.
I hardly noticed Predebon, so I'd say the minutes must be wrong.

If you believe the stats, Tiana Davison was on the field for 12 minutes and had the same number of runs for 7 metres more and made 3 more tackles than Predebon.

I think they’ve swapped her and Caitlan Johnston’s minutes by mistake somehow. It says 26 for CJ and I would have guessed Preds got about 25 for sure.

Stats have been updated and fixed.
They now have our middles minutes;
Johnson 50
H Southwell 49
Romaniuk 46
Predebon 29
Davidson 25
Carter 15
They still have Davidson beating Predebon in every stat with slightly less minutes.

Upton was just being modest when she said in post match sideline interview that the middles led the way to that win, but our middles did match their much more fancied rivals.

I’d say CJ, Hannah, Kayla and both back rowers all had their best game of the season so far or close to it in the same game, and yeah that was a massive part of the win. Predebon, Davison and Carter held their gloves up but didn’t do a whole lot more than that.

Very satisfying win. Such an impressive and intelligent team. Great coaching.

I like that they were smart enough to not rely on J Southwell for structure, they let her have some freedom and an explosive play. I was critical of her origin games this yr, some attack is still sporadic, but her defence and reads have improved 10 fold.

Clear that Tamika and Roach are the main playmakers, some wonderful structure set up by both of them.

I thought it was our best mix of forward talent though. Against the raiders, as much as I like Tiano her lack of lateral defence just stick out and Predabon is going to have to really work at that.
I actually thought Davison and Carter did good work, with solid work rates and kept
The line speed and strong contact going.

That’s the way forward I believe, less big heavy forwards and more robust high work-rate.

CJ, Hannah, Romaniuk, and even Laishon made statements yesterday. Highly impressive, Clydesdale made it known she’s the best backrower in the game.

If we can get Butler back around finals time I’d, that’d be a huge win

Special mention to Shanice Parker. She has to be the best centre in the game. So intelligent and will to win.

Yeah I was talking about this with a mate the other day, the women’s game is already evolving a lot and some of these really big girls who’ve previously been very dominant are now starting to have issues. Predebon was this lethal weapon off the bench last season, yet this year she’s looking like a girl who I seriously think may struggle to get a game next season. Unless she can do something to sort out her mobility issues she’s in trouble, there are times where she just can’t get back onside for a couple of tackles at a time, which just isn’t good enough. Rima has better mobility and more impact with her runs but similar issues overall.

Meanwhile Kayla Romaniuk is a player who just doesn’t stand out at all on initial impressions, which I’d say is why she missed out on a top 24 deal initially last year, she barely looks like an athlete, but over a full game her work rate and consistent initial contact makes her so valuable.

Tiana and Jacinta both look to have the sort of body type and mobility that a lot of the standout forwards have so I’m optimistic that they’ll have bigger roles in future, Jacinta in particular still very young.

She’s definitely the best player nobody talks about. Izzy Kelly would be my pick for the best centre but Shanice’s defensive work on her was first class yesterday.

Agree on Predabon. Big off-season for her to change her game, needs to be able
To keep up with fast moving attack from play the balls, she gets left behind when she’s getting tired.
Still a good player, just needs to be more than a 15minute player. Especially next yr when the player talent is even better and more robust.

I was critical of Kaparni due ro lack of go forward, it think I missed here work rate and mobility.

I think Davison will go back to NZ if they get a squad next he
But Carter is only 18, U18 QLD rep. I thought she held her own nicely in that game.

Yeah Izzy and Stergis obviously class, but yeah Parker is my jam man, she out does them in smarts, intelligence and work rate every day of the week.

Not to take anything from our forwards, but the team is coached and selected in a way that gives them a lot of help.
We don't have weak defenders. Higgins, Maynard, Georgia Roche and Jesse Southwell all defend as well or even better than our forwards and all do more than their share of defending, and all the back 5 stick their hands up to do hitups. Gallagher probably takes the ball up as much or even more than many of our forwards and Strange tries to do the same, albeit she doesn't have the body shape to be as effective. Parker, Roache and even Upton will just charge into the line if no one else is there.
The Herald article today says Gallagher made her 11th line break for the season and without spending the time to do all the maths, I'd say only Butler, Clydesdale and Johnson would beat her for post contact metres.
