Small sample size but I thought this was an interesting trend for 2025 so far vs 2024:
2024 Spine
Tamika Upton - 0.7 tries per game, 1.3 try assists, 0.7 line breaks, 1.5 line break assists
Georgia Roche - 0.2 tries, 0.6 try assists, 0.2 line breaks, 0.4 line break assists
Jesse Southwell - 0 tries, 0.33 try assists, 0 line breaks, 0.22 line break assists
Olivia Higgins - 0.4 tries, 0.1 try assists, 0.4 line breaks, 0.1 line break assists
Nita Maynard - Goose egg
1.3 tries, 2.33 try assists, 1.3 line breaks, 2.22 line break assists
2025 Spine
Botille Vette-Welsh - 0.33 tries, 0.33 try assists, 0.33 line breaks, 0 line break assists
Georgia Roche - 0.33 tries, 0.33 try assists, 0.67 line breaks, 0.33 line break assists
Jesse Southwell - 0 tries, 1.33 try assists, 0 line breaks, 1 line break assist
Olivia Higgins - 0.5 tries, 0 line break assists, 0.5 line breaks, 0 line break assists
Jules Kirkpatrick - 0.33 tries, 0.33 line break assists, 0.33 line breaks, 0.33 line break assists
1.5 tries, 2.33 try assists, 1.83 line breaks, 1.67 line break assists.
Small sample size as I say but these numbers reflect the first few games last year too, more than half of the direct try involvements last year were Tamika and that was the trend for the entire season.
Definitely not trying to spin this as "it's actually good Tamika left", obviously you'd rather get improvement from the other spine players and still have her, and we haven't played the good sides yet*, but it's at least promising that the attack hasn't totally gone to seed. The other girls have lifted and the attack looks a lot more balanced rather than everything being totally built around Tamikaball.
The big swing factor this season was always going to be Jesse and so far she looks like she's having the season we've been waiting for, where her composure and execution is just leagues ahead of other halfbacks and that means your team is always applying more field position pressure than the others are. Promising stuff.
*The Dogs look pretty good though.
